Here's a great talk given by a 25-year vegetarian from a Stanford professor into a study with 300 people on 4 different diets. He concludes low-carb (atkins, paleo etc) is best for weight-loss and health indicators.

My conclusion about the increase of (especially morbid) obesity in the world is that it is a positive-feedback problem cause by bad official dietary advice.

Eat low-fat, high-carb diet -> Gain Weight -> Eat low-fat, high-carb diet -> Gain Weight -> Eat low-fat, high-carb diet -> . . . until some other limiting factor stops the cycle.

Try a green juice diet full of veges and fruit.. More greens and carrots etc..

That will fix anything wrong with your body.

Get some protein with lentils and beans.. And exercise.. There is no health without good amounts of exercise.. Anything else and u will be kidding yourself

Thanks Gentso1

I may take you up on that after I've read up on the subject. At the moment I foresee myself trying it out in a month or two...

Take the leap. For a guy like me I need to eat a large quantity of food and get a full or satisfying feeling. I also love meat.

It really It is a pretty simple diet really and you will probably change it a little as you feel your body go through the process.

Does anyone have any experience of a ketogenic diet?
It involves eating very low amounts of carbohydrate, and thereby putting your body into a state of ketogenesis. You utilize fat as a source of energy, rather than glucose.

I was largely ignorant and had been skeptical of this but am now changing my mind after hearing Steve Gibson (of "Security Now") talk about it.
He has a webpage here: https://www.grc.com/health/lowcarb.htm
and two podcasts here: https://www.grc.com/health/lowcarb-podcasts.htm

It supposedly has many potential health benefits, and I find it a fascinating topic. It's argued to be the most natural diet, in that it's the one for which we are optimally evolved as humans.
I'm at the point where I've decided to look into this properly, and probably try it out for myself.

Mr Gibson also seems to advocate supplementing with vitamin D (which is actually a steroid hormone): https://www.grc.com/health/vitamin-d.htm

I have done this sort of diet on and off for well years. I played sports going up was was encouraged to eat for mass. This worked out great until I stoped playing sports and watched my weight balloon. Thanks to this diet I dropped from 280 to 200lbs and now maintain between 220 and 230 depending on the day of the week. I can not say enough good about the diet and if done correctly can be very effective.

If you have any questions I would be more then happy to help just shoot me a pm.

What is fact: Anyone operating in the media landscape (incl. youtube gurus etc.) profits from presenting an extreme and controversial theory to things that matter to people (here: loosing fat, building muscle, being healthy). Those that propagate moderation and the necessity of fine tuning trade of decisions don't get any traction because its not controversial and not any easy way to go.

I am pretty convinced that there are a few not too complicated but maybe hard to follow principles that constitute a healthy diet. But people keep on searching for the magic pill because that is the easy way to go and find a way in that to continue addictions (sugar is biggest widely accepted adiction in western societies) and the media is feeding those needs. Just my 2 cents :)

I personally go about it like this: Eat as natural as possible (no processed foods), no sugar, low energy density in all the foods you take in, train hard, recover enough, about 50 % carbs, 30% fat, 20% protein (measured in energy not in weight). And never eat less than you are hungry that only will make it worse long terms as your body sees itself under extreme (starvation) conditions it wants to avoid in the future and therefore builds fat long term. It is kind of the same with any extreme diet.

Instead if no carb do no sugar and no white flour products. If you do sports your body benefits a lot from carbs but never needs sugar or white flour.

Edit: If you think about what is natural: During human evolution humans have eaten all kinds of things (at times lots of meat, at times lots of raw foods (plants) and at times lots of corn/cereal) but never processed sugar or white flour. I think we profit from a mix of healthy foods.

I plan to stay on the diet the rest of my life.  There are days that I cheat and have a fish fry or beer, but the core of my diet is low carb (<50 per day).

The biggest positive I have noticed is that I havn't gotten sick in the last year.  I use to get sick 3-4 times a year when I was eating a standard western diet.  Also most of my aches and pains have gone away as well.  From what I have read this is because of reduced inflamation.

The one negative I have noticed is that when doing cardio intensive excersise, my energy level is lower if I havn't had any carbs before excersing.

I've done the paleo diet for the last year and it does make a tremendous difference.

You will melt weight away faster than you ever thought and you do it all while eating fat and protein.

The carb flu sucks though as you go through withdrawals.  Only lasts about 3 days though

Thanks for the feedback lil_jay890
It's harder to research when there are so many different names for very similar diets. I think 'paleo' seems to be among the more popular names.

Having done it for a year, are you intending to keep your diet like this indefinitely? I'm mostly interested in the supposed health benefits, rather than weight loss.

Isn't it funny how the more interesting things in life take a lot of digging to find? BitShares, paleo diet, what else do I need to discover I wonder?
