Here's a more detailed explanation for you Niel.  I hope this is more useful.

There are user issued assets (UIAs) which either your users could issue themselves (each issue their own currency) or crowdbucks could create its own UIA. UIAs can be used for many things including different types of crowdfunding.  e.g. A user could issue 100,000 project coins and put them up for sale at a fixed price, say, $1 per coin with the aim of raising $100,000.  Or the issuer may choose to keep a chunk for themselves to align their incentives with the investors.  The seller could pledge to offer buyers certain rewards.  This could be as formally contractual or informal as you wish (more legal legwork if a traditional "company" is raising funds).  The issuer has the power to pay dividends to the investors.   Smart contracts are an option in the future but it's not yet finished being developed on Bitshares.  These UIA features are actually still in development too but should be ready early next year.

Using bitUSD as the currency on the network gives the benefits of bitcoin with the stability of the USD.  The side effect is your users would have to be sent somewhere to buy it to get access to the network, but once they've done that they could participate easily in the ecosystem, buying UIAs with it, transferring bitUSD it instantly worldwide with virtually no fees, earning yield (variable interest rate).  It's a banking solution.  People can keep their money in bitUSD and earn interest while keeping it safe in a place it can't be confiscated, or have it value eroded by inflation, other than the inflation of that asset.  bitUSD tracks the price of the USD so it is just as stable as the USD.  1 bitUSD = 1USD.  So bitUSD could be the lubricant of the network and a savings account which gives people easy access to the crowdbucks network, if bitUSD was integrated as the standard currency on the network.

The other aspect is being a Bitshares gateway, which is explained here (document is a work in progress):

We are currently preparing to launch a new website that is intended to deliver a sophisticated E-Commerce Marketplace featuring multiple best-of-breed applications, such as Banking and Account Management, Sales and Marketing Tools, a Contact Relationship Management system, integrated Social Networking and much more, all seamlessly combined to deliver a unique platform for doing business in the 21st Century.

This new site will include a variety of digital currency tools and integrates a collection of powerful web-based services into a single convenient trading platform that makes it easy for people to buy and sell all kinds of goods and services in a series of trusted marketplace environments, etc.

We are very interested in leveraging BitShares technology in order to facilitate the creation of a new Virtual Corporation operating as a Distributed Autonomous Corporation (DAC) and are currently looking for advice and other types of assistance in creating the distributed foundation for this new entity.

We also expect to create a couple of new crypto-currencies that will help us both to fund the implementation and continued development of this new system, as well as to facilitate ongoing trade among the various participants, etc.

If anyone is interested in assisting us in helping to set up this proposed new Virtual Corporation as a DAC, and can offer suggestions and/or insight into how we can best accomplish this aspect of our new system, we would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks in advance for any input.

This is exactly what I mentioned in my last post to Bytemaster Dan, are defacto leader.  We need the ability for user generated assets and the reliability of these assets (to pay dividends, to go up in value (not necessarily as its determined by profitability and interest), and to be held accountable).

Bytemaster Dan has a lot on his plate, but he is moving forward, slowly buy surely, but time is not on our side.

Thanks to Matt608 and CLains for your helpful replies.

As far as integrating Bitshares is concerned, I'm still pretty sketchy on the details of how we could best go about adopting the user-issued-asset feature, and/or using BTS / bitUSD  / running for election as a delegate, etc., so any details you may be able to offer would be greatly appreciated.

tonyk2 - glad you are entertained ;) - however your post is not helpful in any way.  Do you suggest we should use NXT or Mastercoin or perhaps something else instead of Bitshares for our project?  I had the impression that Bitshares was intended to be used for projects like ours...  Perhaps you know better?

Our main product BitShares is a DAC already doing identity, banking and marketplace. It would perhaps be best if you use this DAC as a backbone and focus on the web front-end.

As matt said, there are two good ways to start funding your business right away.

First, you can create a user-issued asset on the BitShares blockchain; this can be the stock for your business, giving dividends from your business to everyone holding this stock.

Second, you can become a Delegate in BitShares, atm earning approx. 2600$ a month; you get voted into a Delegate position by providing value to the BitShares ecosystem.

By means of these two functions you can become an integral part of the BitShares ecosystem before it grows to a billion dollar business. You will get technical help to implement functions that are required by your business and free promotion by the rising BitShares tide.

When BitShares is a 1 billion dollar business your Delegate will be earning 50000$ each month (yup) and your stock will likely be valued at tens of millions of dollars. At this point you can fork BitShares with all the newest features and become an independent DAC.

Hi Niel,
You could make use of the user-issued-asset feature on of BTS, allowing you or your users to create their own coin without having to launch a separate DAC.

Other options include using bitUSD as an alternative to the local currency.  It has no trading limits and earns interest for the users while having the stability of USD.

You could tell us more about your plans and consider running for election as a delegate which could provide funding to your enterprise.

Feel free to PM me,

Regards

Not sure exactly what you mean by a "student project" however this is a large and quite complex enterprise-class system that is essentially open-ended, so it would be a very good learning tool for a variety of students to participate in.

Can you elaborate a bit on what you meant by your post please...
