GPU miner already exists.
Not entirely sure I - or anyone else - can believe you without some sort of proof, as this would be the golden goose of Protoshare mining.

If you really want to build a rig for mining, the cheapest way is with a FX-6100 or some other FX-series 6-core. Add to that, 4GB of RAM (512MB per thread is sufficient - 1GB is plenty for a lightweight Linux distro and a dedicated miner.. 6GB might be better if it's multipurpose). No hard drive needed - you can boot a Linux Live USB, run the whole OS on your RAM, use persistent storage on the USB if you need to save anything.

No special heatsink needed unless you overclock.

400W PSU is plenty, even with a mild overclock. I'd go with 500-550W because it's roughly the same price as a 400W.

Total should be sub-$400, even $300 is possible if you keep a strict budget. Most likely won't pay off. Over 50% of the total PTS have already been mined, difficulty went way up. ROI could take 8 months, easily.

GPU miner already exists.

It *might* exist, just like I might be a billionaire if I claim to be. Without proof, it's kind of a moot point. Even moreso when, assuming a GPU miner exists, nobody will release it to the public.

So, it doesn't help the original poster at all.

Processor == AMD fx8350  8 cores == ~$180
8 gb ram cosair ~ $35
Motherboard of your choice wit at least 4 pcie slots ~ $80
Cooling for the CPU  ~$20
Power supply 1000w ~$ 200
SSD 60 GB ~ $60
Powercolor R9 280x ~$300

total 875

i think it'll mine your PTS and a scrypt coin for you nicely
Correct me if I'm wrong but we can't currently mine PTS with a GPU? The Powercolor - as nice a GPU as it is - would be wasted in this setup.

I heard some rough things about those powercolors, are they junk like everyone says?

Zeus: i think keyhotee will mine in the background while it's running. don't worry about additional hardware.

I believe so.
Looking at github.com you may see the 'miner' folder => https://github.com/InvictusInnovations/keyhotee/tree/master/miner

Buy a hetzner server for a year

or some of those $39.50 Xeon e3-1230's for $39.50 on oneprovider.net

$39.50/mo for a e3-1230? Care to post some links? I couldn't find any.

Thank you very much for your reply. Greatly appreciated!

However, I think I read somewhere that  in order to keep my kehotee ID I will be required to mine at least once per year. Is that correct or I have missunderstood something? If that's the case I need some kind of pc that can mine. I am currently using an old laptop which I think that if a turn on the mining I would just burn electricity...

Can someone please clarify this for me? Will I be required to mine to keep my Kehottee ID and can I do this with a laptop?

Hi,

I have never mined anything and I am very newbie but want to learn.
Can someone please let me know what kind of hardware i should buy to mine protoshares effectively? I am looking to spend around $700 -$800.
If someone could advise what kind of CPU, GPU, cool fan maybe and anything else I need to build a mining ring that would be great..
Many thanks in advance!
Okay, first my two pence on what you're trying to do:

Investing in local hardware is - in my opinion - really ill-advised. There is absolutely no guarantee you will make your money back and although it's true you could always use the rig built to mine another cryptocurrency, you are going to be spending months and months earning that $700-$800 back. Not to mention power costs factor into local mining.. If you're making less than it costs to run your rig, then is it worth it (at all)? Cryptocurrencies are very finicky and protoshares are a very young currency - that comes with all kinds of caveats you should look into.. I would really advise you to do your research on cryptocurrencies and how they can rise and fall and have more of an idea about your investment before you spunk $800 on a rig for it. In truth, it sounds like a silly idea - sorry :P

My opinion, totally my own doing this on a budget.. I'd spend that $800 on cloud mining personally. The overhead is much smaller. Electric costs!

But to answer your question, the general rule of thumb is to go for as many cores as possible with as much GHz and cache as you can. I local mine with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300. I didn't pay for it - so already I'm getting profit - but I'm netting around 60col/min with that (70col/min on a good day). In comparison, I have a Pentium G860 (mid-range i3 equivalent) that nets around 50col/min. The newer i-series of chips (i7 etc) have an extra instruction set called AVX - these perform very very well with mining and if you were to build a rig, I'd suggest one of these. However, for a budget rig an Athlon II X6 would not go amiss - those cores will definitely make a difference.
