I just downloaded the Bitshares client for Mac and it's installed as locked, as though it's already linked to an account. What am I doing wrong? I still need to create an account, but can't do anything with this client.

Probably you has installed BitShares wallet at your Mac and create wallet in the past.
If you want to use your previous wallet you need to remind password, if not - you need to delete wallet data and restart the client.

Edit: BitShares wallet location at Mac OSX: ~/Library/Application\ Support/BitShares/wallets
If you not remember what was inside wallet - make a backup of wallets folder first.
