I am getting the same issue. I have reindexed, deleted peers_leveldb, and have left the client running for about an hour but not luck so far. I will try running in terminal when I get home to see if I can get a more detailed error log.

On version 0.9.2 Windows 8.1 64bit

I am doing reindexing now, still says "severe network problem" though..
after the reindexing the client will start syncing with the network
after having synced with the network, the warning will disappear ..
just stay put

I get this since 0.9 too, but it goes away after 10 min or so and then it is synced.

this leads me to wonder, is there anything wrong with your internet connection? are you downloading stuff on torrent? are people playing call of duty in your house and talking on vent (or whatever call of duty people call vent)?

I am quite sure that noone is doing any "heavy duty" with the connection.

The client cannot get past "connecting to the Bitshares network" at the first stage..
Try run the terminal version "bitshares_client.exe" ... it should give more details about what's wrong with the connection ..

occasionally the struggle results in me tethering my phone to steal internet from my limited amount of 3g.

when I run out of 3g, and my phone drops down to 2g, i get these same symptoms.

Just let the cluent run for a 30min. .. alternatively remove the "peeres_leveldb" folder in %APPDATA%\ROAMING\bitshares
And restart the client
