Another reason to avoid "BitShares" in the name is because the target audience is NOT cryptocurrency enthusiasts but "normal" geeks and eventually end-users (for KeyID signin).  I think that at this stage, the connotations that BitShares brings will not help attract the people who would make use of the DACs services.

I think it's fine to list it as "BitShares DNS" on coinmarketcap though.

I agree. For marketing you have to approach people where they are rather than try to bring people to your cause.

As long as coinmarketcap knows what it is and maybe you can use some of the same colors and logo designs so people who know will know.

By the way I like BitNames.

Seems to be fairly easy to find names that suggest the DNS part, but I haven't heard any suggestions that speak to identity management. I'm not a marketing guy, just making an observation.

Not sure how to say both - MyIdNS? that sounds like internationalized domain names. BitNames? Kind of suggests both personal names and domain names, but could be confused with .BIT. Perhaps something like NameShares - oh wait, that's where it all started!

The BitShares brand name is important, but each of these DACs needs both a front end retail presence (which might have a retail trade name) and a back end presence for investor/developer/booster participation. The back end should be named Bitshares Something, but a business might also have a retail site with some name that is different and catchy (isn't this what Music is doing?). That said, DNS may have more blurring than usual, because there should be lots of overlap. I think the primary retail audience for DNS is going to be nerds. And I mean that in a good way.

+1

This is what I have assumed all along - all DACs should have a market name and a consumer friendly front-end name.

BitShares Lotto might be known to game players as the Hard Luck Casino
BitShares Music might be known to its customers as BitTunes
BitShares Toast might be known to its customers as Names-R-Us

It's up to the developers to pick a name that will attract their customers.

But on coinmarketcap, BTER, BTC38, etc. they all show up as a branded family and work together to attract attention of investors.

When you need to connect the two, then Follow My Vote powered by BitShares is an easy way to have your cake and eat it too.

It's like you could have called it 'Toast DNS.'  People would have an idea what the DAC did but after a while they would just start calling it it's cool brand name 'Toast'
If you call it BitShares DNS, there's no cool brand name for it to become and if you make it BitShares 'Cool brand name', like X, then you lose the function. Tricky.
I don`t believe you need a function in the name.
It have to be easy to spell and need the ability to burn itself into peoples minds and it could not harm if its only cool.
Take for example Ripple, Nxt, Google, Sprite, Fanta ... those brands are not related to any funtion, but who cares, they sound cool.

So yeah why not call it BitShares Toast. In 2 years no one will ask anymore what is Toast? Ist just there and People know what to do with it.

Yes true, I generally agree with you here again.

I still think indicating the function could be useful early on, and I'd still like people to know BitShares-PTS was BitShares-'The one you hold for snapshots of new DACs' as I still find people are uncertain of how BitShares works even a year in. So still a bit tricky for me again.  (I guess by the end of the year there will have been enough snapshots that people will know)

+5% for BitShares Toast too  :)

A brand is something you build over time, not what you start out with during the twists and turns of early development. We now have world class brand-building help. Play the game for when the dust settles:

No wonder this circuit failed... it says, "Made in Japan."

Marty: What do you mean, Doc? All the best stuff is made in Japan.

I don`t think you can compare those corporations with BitShares, not yet.
In my oppinion Procter & Gamble is not a brand itself.
The Brand is Coca Cola with its products: coke light, coke lemon, coke cherry etc.
Sprite, Fanta etc. are its own brands.
Coke could easily sell Fanta to P&G and it would not change the brand in peoples point of view.

however...

I was more than a little disappointed to read that the followmyvote DAC will be named VOTE DAC (what a hell of a common garden name) and not BitShares Voice/Vote.
And maybe now the DNS DAC will not be named BitShares DNS, wtf.

I don`t know whats the legal side of using the BitShares brand as i see it`s a registered trademark.
But...

How i would like to see the BitShares ecosystem:

Everyone is free to build a DAC based on the BitShares Toolkit.
Those DACs that are based on the Toolkit and honor PTS and AGS based on the Social Consensus should be free to use the BitShares brand in there name.
In 2015 there could be lots of BitShares DACs online or in active development.
Well some of the DACs (products) will not survive by natural selection of markets and BitShares will have to compete with other upcoming and growing brands.
But i can imaging where we could be in 2020 if we stick together and support the BitShares brand.

Im just a ordinary guy and i like to keep things simple (ok this text maybe not very simple to read).
I like some brands and some would say im a fanboy of this or that brand.
But this enthusiasm is where i take my own motiviation from to support the BitShares brand/ecosystem (e.g. my own blog http://kettenblog.wordpress.com (covert advertising) where i try to spread the spirit of BitShares to the entire german speaking community.)
If i go to get some new shoes i likely will buy some of my favorite brand even if there are cheaper end better but non-branded ones available.
"Do not undervalue The Power of the Brands" http://www.ssireview.org/articles/entry/the_power_of_brands

What is the BitShares ecosystem?
For me the ecosystem consists of DACs that fullfill the follwing 3 BTS-ECO conditions:
1. The DAC is named with the BitShares brand
2. The DAC is honoring AGS and PTS
3. The DAC is based on the BitShares Toolkit

I don`t get much impressed if a "DAC" like LottoShares is honoring AGS and PTS as this fullfills only one of the three conditions above.
Every DAC that will not fullfill all three conditions is just just another altcoin for me.

If now no more "original" BitShares DACs (by name) will come out, my willing to support this ecosystem will highly decrease.
And in doubt i would rather support the BitShares VOTE DAC instead of the maybe more groundbreaking but independent followmyvote DAC.

The power of the BitShares brand is what keeps us stronger than those altcoins and lonely wolfs in cryptospace. Only together we are strong.

Please, Toast, don`t cook your own soup like all these doomed altcoins and empower the BitShares ecosystem by fullfilling the three BTS-ECO conditions with your amazing DAC.
The same applies to followmyvote, if you read this.

I hope you get my point of view as my english is not very well, sry.

Kind regards
Vato
