I matching APIs as close as possible is as important as GUI.
I keep telling people that Mintpal was the most successful altcoin exchange not because it had groundbreaking features or support, but because it had the cleanest interface of them all. It's a shame that nobody is using that UI anymore. Poloniex looks nice, but it became successful because Mintpal disappeared.

Here you have the complete front-end. The exchange came into life 1 year after Cryptsy and 1 month after Poloniex and managed to capture both user bases pretty fast.

We will be migrating BitShares GUI to copy as closely as possible the best interface out there. We will also be copying the best fee system and best market rules.
Everyone seems to like poloniex margin trading, so we will adapt their rules unless Bitfinex is better. Any help on identifying the best choices let us know.
We are going to stop trying to invent new market mechanics if at all possible and use what is proven to work. So please help us identify places where our system deviates from the market-accepted solutions.

2. Trading Interfaces
3. Order Matching Rules
In other words, we want people to be able to use BitShares without having to learn anything new!
If I lend funds to someone when there is no order book, then it is impossible to "call".
For fee rules, the best would probably be 0.2% fee (this is how crypto exchanges work). But If we cannot do percentage fees, then a flat fee per trade also works, the way that stock brokerages work, for example scottrade $7 trades. So if it is too technically difficult to do a .2% fee on the blockchain for some reason, a flat fee can work.
It is really, really important that customers dont pay fees for orders that do not execute (aside from a very very small fee purely to prevent spam, that needs to be as low as possible, like .1 BTS). This needs to be the case for both lifetime members and normal users. Not everyone is going to be a lifetime member, and we need the liquidity those people provide from creating orders.Since 80% of paid fees go to referral, I think 0.1 BTS for all is not feasible. Instead, we can decrease the difference by lowing the trading fee to 1 BTS (0.8 BTS for normal member vs. almost 0 BTS for lifetime member. Based on current fee system, it's 8 BTS vs. 0 BTS)

BTC-E seems to be the most successful, but there are others.
I think the order matching rules are pretty good right now. It seems to be standard (same as other exchanges).
The margin trading using the current orderbook to determine whether or not to execute sounds like the right way to go. My question is how does it bootstrap?
If I lend funds to someone when there is no order book, then it is impossible to "call".
Could someone create a poll (preferably on bitcointalk, but also here) that asks people to vote for the best exchange website.
It would be great to have some real market research regarding which features people like, and which ones they do not.

1. Please have a 'novice' section so non-traders can buy/sell easily at the spot price.
2. Have this work on the iPhone, ideally with an app available in the AppStore
3. As clean and intuitive as possible

Well, BTC-e was founded in 2011 and it also stopped being an altcoin exchange a long time ago as everyone is focused on BTC/LTC nowadays. BTC-e is to Bitcoin exchanges what Polo was to altcoin exchanges in 2014. Old and lacking of tools for serious trading. It is successful because it was founded many years ago and managed to build a solid user base without having to deal with a lot of competition along the way. With Mintpal, the story was different. A new altcoin platform that became 1st after a few weeks, stealing the clients from all the other exchanges. Reason ? The sleek, simple to use GUI.

Too bad i cannot find that screen with the top exchanges sorted by volume. Mintpal had so much volume in early 2014 that it was being compared with Bitstamp and Bitfinex.

Speaking about MetaTrader, i think it looks absolutely horrendous and its success had to do more with the fact that it was released in 2002-2005 and also that it had a great marketing campaign behind it. I remember that before adblock existed, i was receiving hundreds of pop-ups per day about the MetaTrader platform.
Another reason could be:

There are some elements that you can take from Bitstamp and implement in graphene, but i'm afraid that "Tradeview" would be the last. It looks great, but it's clunky and it hangs often when you are dealing with great volume.
I agree with copying Poloniex too. Their last UI update made a night-and-day difference.
Yes lets get away from trying to reinvent everything, and instead try to take what is already proven to work, and adapt it into the blockchain.

But you don't want an exact clone. You start with a template based on whatever is the best out there but you have to add your own magic to it. If it's exact clone they'll use the original.
They all have strengths and weaknesses. Autosell for example is a strong feature, very popular.

I cannot see the orderbook and the graph or last sales at the same time...it takes scrawling. Maybe my small 15' screen is the issue.
3. Be very careful with the lending thing - you do not want to favour heavily the lending compared to shorting, as there is a chance if you do to dry up the shorters...i.e. move all of them to lending/borowing.
in my mind they should offer substantially different things.so they serve different needs or risk profiles.

But wouldn't lending attract more shorters? Or at least those who are willing to risk more to short?

I've also heard more people complain about the fact they need to be constantly scrolling through the page. That seems like an issue.
Okay, so what we want to do is copy polo, but make it so we need to do less scrolling.
I suggest changing the black background, or give the user the option to switch to a white or lighter color background.
According to a study made, 50% of the population suffers from astigmatism which makes reading light letters on dark backgrounds hard on their eyes.

I like all of puppies ideas.I like all puppies ideas too.
I don't see why we have to choose. I think our killer feature is letting ppl choose the skin/interface they want. We should offer at start 3 interfaces and allow ppl to choose. This alone would really set us apart.

Thanks, Jakub. I'm confident that we can have a very presentable trading UI without a whole lot of additional development time. Perhaps the most difficult part will be to get the chart in order, especially if we really want to have chart indicators and drawing tools. Although I would personally be fine with leaving drawing and indicators out for now.
BitcoinWisdom (link (https://bitcoinwisdom.com/markets/bitfinex/btcusd))
We started a conversation about this yesterday... I believe MT4 is the best exchange for traders. Here is a link to the conversation:$40 per trade? Maybe if your trading a standard lot (10 million). We dont do the same leverage on bts so this number scales down.
https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php/topic,19763.0.html
As far as your other questions:
1. Fee System
-Most brokers trade with 0 fee's but expand the spread
-ECN brokers charge a fee (usually $40 per trade) plus there is a spread
2. Trading interfaces
metatrader 4 is the most accepted
think or swim
ninja trader
bloomberg
3. Order Matching Rules
-Most broker match orders with their pool of funds, then move the order to the open market only if they don't have the liquidity (this is why they can charge lower fees, they attempt to match within their pool of customers)
-ECN Brokers place the order directly into the interbank market (hence the higher cost)
-Bitshares needs to incorporate stop loss and take profit orders for a 3rd party platform like mt4 to use
This is great initiative. I think we can take already existing HTML5 codes from https://www.tradingview.com/features/ already and feed the charts with BitShares DEX data.
https://www.coinigy.com/ is a good example of an multi exchange interface for Bitcoins. You might noticed that they use tradingview.com charts. They integrate all big BTC Exchanges in one interface and allow you to trade and monitor your balances. They are also developing arbitrage bots and a simultaneously trading bot for different exchanges. Than means you can buy and Sell BTC at the same time with one simple click on two different exchanges. This makes arbitrage trading very easy.
A Chatbox / Trollbox is mandatory to bring in people and to keep them in a trading community.
http://protrader.com/platform/desktop offers additional features and designs.
I think at the end we just need a simple interface to attract the first group of traders. Polo´s interface would be a good start. However i think it would be more important to offer a simple API connection so that other platforms like MT4, Protrader.com, coinigy.com, etc can link and tap into our markets easier. Let the trader decide which interface they want to use for their trading.
A "Best Exchange Poll" already effectively exists and it constantly updated: just look at volume. People trade at their preferred exchange and "vote" with their dollars and satoshis.
That is really a good (maybe optimal) metric!
PS metatrader4 is sure on top of the list...
I would say the best combination is metatrader4 + polo-like web gui
We will be migrating BitShares GUI to copy as closely as possible the best interface out there. We will also be copying the best fee system and best market rules.
Ok, guys, i've spent my entire day visualizing and painting how the "Graphene Exchange" should look like.+5%
Here's my mockup:
1 - The "MARKETS" sidebar was taken from the now defunct Mintpal and redesigned for this theme
2 - The Chart was taken from TradingView and adapted for Graphene
3 - The "CHAT BOX" was copied from Poloniex. I have another version with the white TROLLBOX
4 - The "LAST TRADES" panel was taken from Bitstamp.
Regarding this design, there still more polishing to do, but i will deal with that later.
My idea now is to create a new thread called "Graphene - The battle of the mockups" or something along the line where everyone posts his designs. Something less focused on analysis and more on the visual aspect. This thread for analysis, the other one for mockups.

@clayop Yes, tradeblock's chart looks good and i like that it offers advanced tools for trading. It's snappy too.
The one thing that i dislike about most of the charts, though, is that the info for each candle is located somewhere at the top, taking your attention away and confusing you. When it was first released, Coinigy used a very fluid chart that also provided panels with info above each candle at hovering. Unfortunately, they've replaced it.
@Xeldal
Haha! i like them. The only problem is that Yunbi displays the data in the pop-ups in a horrible format. They should cut the "Open""Close""High""Low""Volume" (and the random MACD/HIST garbage below completely) and just replace with "O, C, H, L, V" and display the list vertically. This way the pop-up should be small enough to fit right above or below the line.
For example:
From this: (http://i.imgur.com/NHSWTym.png) To this: (http://i.imgur.com/S7nCxi0.png)
It is now less intrusive as it does not cover entire candles and it doesn't force you to look on the left. But anyways, i can get your point :)

If there is a simple version , I don't think it should be anything with charts / orders books / markets etc. I think plain and simple, this -> that, enter how much you want and it returns a price and total cost and you press go. Thats it. Shapeshift would be a good example. You may like this,

Yep. This could be the landing page and we would have other tab for trading with more tools for the day trader.
Additionally when their balance gets to zero, just like in arcades, you might want to suggest this screen to them. This could be like the "continue" screen. Use the theories behind gamification.
