All of the coins in the top 10 (market cap) are going down in value along with BTC... except BTSX. I view this as very bullish.

How long should 4.10 take to sync?

I am running OSX 10.9.4    I've been stuck at - last block sync 4 days 7 hours for the last 3 hours now.  I am showing only between 3 and 6 network connections and intermittent loss of connection about every 30 sec.   BitsharesX version 4.9 worked perfectly.

Thanks

Try this comand in console mode

Code: [Select]
network_add_node "188.226.195.137:60696" add

Thanks.  What I did was to force quit out of the app, relaunch and choose the "Reset Database" option from the popup error message.   So now it is re-syncing the entire database but seems to be working correctly...( 30min syncing and im about 1/2 way through).

Bingo! This worked. For anyone using OSX, open activity monitor and force quit the bitsharesx app. You'll get the "reset database" prompt that way. Is there a console command for resetting the database?

My client is hung up on syncing the blockchain. I'm stuck on block 8387. Any solution to this problem?

do you not?

I want to believe. I feel as though I don't know enough about market dynamics to come to any sort of educated conclusion. However, I do know that if this little experiment works out and BitAssets hold their pegs, BTSX is going to skyrocket in value. Solving the volatility issue is the holy grail and (in my opinion) the only thing holding crypto back from achieving new highs.

The kind of volumes BTSX consistently does is incredible

Excl. Bitcoin & Litecoin we sometimes do like today more volume than everyone else combined.

But, but empir...didnt you hear...bitUSD is "broken"! Its allllll over for us!  :P

:) I hope this ride won't be too big though. I think it's a fair price for where the code seems to be atm.

My feeling now is I'd like to see BTSX consolidate below the 80-85 Million CAP until there's a more stable, bug free version.

And then only see it make a big move to overtake LiteCoin when there's a more robust, decentralised BitAsset system, because if we take the no.2 spot (with the spotlight that brings) in place, given the kind of volumes we already see, it might sound crazy but I actually think this can go to Bitcoin territory < 4 months after that.

Do you guys think the BitAsset pegs will work out (mostly) as planned?

Maybe a lot of people just finished reading about btsx, after they first heard about it a few day ago. Then they went to localbitcoins or bank and now they are buying.

This is a good theory. They are probably converting BTC and other alts into BTSX though. BTSX is only available on a couple of underground exchanges. I bought on Bter.

Glad you guys like it. I know the market dynamics go way beyond this simplistic explanation but I think it does a good job quickly getting the general idea across.

My balance is now showing as 0.00 -- I have a JSON backup. Am I ok? Did I just lose all of my investment?

Have you done wallet_backup_restore <.json file> <wallet_name> ?

Is that basically the same as File > Import Wallet ?

Yes I think so.

It's late and I'm being an idiot. I just realized the wallet is syncing to the blockchain. It's stuck on  block 8387, so no wonder it's not displaying a balance.  :o

I think the balance fix will take at least two weeks, if ever.

If you all want this market to function the way it's supposed to, someone needs to start creating video tutorials on how to use the BitSharesX app and explaining the basics of trading. I guarantee you there are a bunch of people just like me who have no idea what they're doing so we don't bother using the exchange to its full potential. For example, I would like to know (in plain english) when I should convert to bitUSD, when would be a good time to short a bitAsset, etc. There is so much I would like to know but have no idea where to start learning.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Incase you missed it, check out this site, it may help: http://nullstreet.com

I hear that's a great site ;) But seriously, I understand BitShares, BitAssets, DPOS, TITAN etc. I'm up to speed on all of that but I'm still struggling specifically with the trading aspect of the exchange app. It would be awesome if some of the community members used Camtasia or ScreenFlow to make a video using the app and explained margin calls, shorting, etc.

General Discussion / BitSharesX: Explain It Like I'm Five (my attempt)
« on: August 30, 2014, 10:36:35 pm »
I started a blog called nullstreet.com -- I intend to center it around DACs. This is my 2nd post.

BitSharesX = A decentralized exchange for trading derivatives (called BitAssets).
BTSX = Shares of BitSharesX. Functions the same as the "coins" you're used to.
BitAsset = A derivative of a real world asset. Is derived from BTSX.
BitUSD = A BitUSD is a BitAsset. It's value is pegged to the value of 1 (real) USD.

The goal of BitSharesX is to eliminate the volatility associated with bitcoin and all other altcoins. Cryptocurrencies cannot be used as money because they are too volatile. Bitcoin can swing in value as much as 20% in a day, making it unlikely any normal person would use it as money or to store value. "BitAssets" exist within the BitSharesX exchange and were devised as a way to offer all the benefits of a cryptocurrency with the stability of a real world asset (USD, gold, EUR, CNY, etc). This can be accomplished through the use of derivatives. Let me explain...

A BitAsset is "pegged" to the value of a real world asset like USD, gold or CNY. To maintain this peg, the value of the BitAsset dynamically changes as the value of both the real world asset changes and as the value of BTSX changes. If 1 USD = 10 BTSX, 1 BitUSD = 10 BTSX. If we wake up tomorrow and BTSX has gone up in value and 1 USD = 9 BTSX, 1 BitUSD would = 9 BTSX.

Think of BitAssets (BitUSD, BitGLD, BitCNY) as a cryptocurrency that "holds" a bunch of BTSX shares inside of it -- if either the asset or BTSX change in value, the number of BTSX inside the BitAsset change to always equal the value of the real world asset.

Here's a visual representation:

Just my two cents. The first thing that needs to be implemented is an auto update feature. This will ensure people are up to date on their version and we don't get the "Insufficient Depth" too much anymore.

The branding for BitShares is needlessly complicated.

BitSharesX = A decentralized exchange for trading derivatives (called BitAssets). Like Mt. Gox, BitStamp, etc -- only it's an app.
BTSX = The shares of BitSharesX.
BitAsset = A derivative of a real world asset.

The goal of BitSharesX is to eliminate volatility associated with bitcoin and all other alt coins. Cryptocurrencies cannot be used as money because they are too volatile. Bitcoin can swing in value as much as 20% in a day, making it unlikely any normal person will use it as money or to store value. That's where these "BitAssets" come in and they are quite difficult to explain.

A BitAsset is "pegged" to the value of real world things like USD, gold or CNY. The value of the BitAsset dynamically changes as the value of BTSX changes.

If 1 USD = 10 BTSX, 1 BitUSD = 10 BTSX.

If we wake up tomorrow and BTSX has gone up in value and 1 USD = 9 BTSX, 1 BitUSD would = 9 BTSX.

Think of BitAssets (BitUSD, BitGLD, etc) as a cryptocurrency that "holds" a bunch of BTSX shares inside of it -- if either the asset or BTSX change in value, the number of BTSX inside the BitAsset change to always equal the value of the asset.

If you see the potential value in such a thing, buy shares in the autonomous company called "BitSharesX".
