General Discussion / Storj and Bitshares Collaboration
« on: June 25, 2014, 05:56:26 pm »
Used to be pretty heavily involved with Bitshares since I mined the first Protoshares block. I since started my own project called http://storj.io/, which focuses on decentralized storage. Bytemaster and I had a discussion or two about how awesome this would be a long time ago. If I remember correctly Bytemaster was working on this concept before Bitshares, and you can see some of his code here: https://github.com/bytemaster/tornet.

Just wanted to start discussion of ways that Storj and Bitshares can work together.

I'm most curious about using Transactions as Proof-of-Stake system for one of our blockchains.
Also I think we could figure out a pretty solid DAC using Storj and Bitshares tech.

If you want to learn some more about Storj there are some good resources:

I'm quite impressed with what they've done there and also quite disillusioned that's it's not doing well in the marketplace.

They lack on design and marketing I guess. Look the website, why to spend time there. Would you visit it again as a player?
+5%. Just compare it to any other successful Bitcoin betting website.

General Discussion / Re: Website 4.0....
« on: March 30, 2014, 07:33:11 pm »
I am working on a draft site with more content here...  after seeing the new website I found it to be lacking in content and the stock photos have constantly come up as a problem.  The single thing that made the site was the video.   Recognizing that the problem was lack of content...

I really liked the website, but I agree with those observations. It might also be more personal if you had some candid photos of you guys in a meeting, sharing a joke, struggling with a problem etc. as opposed to some of the stock photos.
I still have the old photos from that Virginia meeting somewhere if you need it.

To add to that I think it clear that the direct to consumer route for a DNS system will not work. Namecoin tried this and failed. Bitcoin users might be interested to install the software, but the other 99% percent of the consumer base won't care enough to install some plugins for some obscure domain name system. You can beat the network effect of the system the entire internet uses.

This would be my strategy if I was running Bitshares DNS:

1) Create Bitshares DNS to spec
2) Create a traditional company
3) Have that company create APIs that allow easy support with legacy DNS systems.
4) Make tons of money selling the APIs to backbone. You reduce the workload of backbone providers by 90%. You can save the hundreds of millions of dollars while getting Bitshares DNS out there. Blockchain based DNS system solved:

  • Domain Squatting
  • DNS Poisoning
  • Long DNS Propagation Times
  • No need for specialized hardware anymore. Just needs to be able to run the Bitshares Client.
  • Eliminates downtime and censorship

5) Suddenly now everyone supports the system with no effort on the part of the users

You missed the secure protection against man in the middle attacks.  (compromised SSL certs)
Indeed. You could do awesome things if you added Keyhotee to the mix. Using basic public-private key encryption you could create secure channels of communications between the server and user. Resistant to man in the middle attacks as you stated.

Interesting, I thought 3I owned and built that website. No wonder it's not updated anymore.
I built the Protoshares website, but because of the trademark issues the name was changed to Bitshares PTS. I still have the domains and servers for the Invictus web properties. PTS is no longer a main focus it seems, and has not really been updated. Invictus seems more committed to building DACs, and they now have the resources to get it done.

KeyID / Selling Feature of Bitshares DNS

Has been pointed out yet? I think the best feature of Bitshares DNS is propagation. With the current DNS system you can wait 24-48 hours to get your correct settings to go through. With a blockchain system this is whatever the block time is. Top level providers can simply replace their current systems with Bitshares DNS as a back end because it solves all the propagation and issues that they spend 90% of their time trying to fix.

Its an easy sell to the backbone providers.

Did you talk to anyone from I3 yet about whether they would buy it? Selling it without asking them hurts the whole community IMO

We have previously referred to BitShares PTS as "Protoshares", but no longer do so. "ProtoShare" is a registered trademark of Site9, Inc. for its prototyping and mock-up software product, ProtoShare. There is no relationship between ProtoShare and Invictus Innovations.

I can offer up to 0.75 btc per domain
Last bid was 1.35 BTC. Closing it and selling it tomorrow.

I would be alright with this. I've already got two offers for the domain, so this would have to happen in the next day or two.

This could start as a subreddit, might be good for qualifying votes etc.
Good idea. Solves the consensus problem. Proposals are made. Upvote if you agree and down vote if you disagree. Good proposals are officially voted on and the funds dispatched are from multisig.

Seems like a whole lot of ideas from the community, and the bottleneck is communicating with Invictus. Why don't we allocate some of the war chest, just like 10-20 BTC to start, to the community and let the community decide what we want to do with it. We can develop and purchase our own ads, media, etc.

Really an experiment here, but I think its worth trying.

I agree with everything you said. It seems like Invictus is doing a decent job when it comes to conferences and things, but our web presence is entirely lacking. Ideally we would want Brain to do more on the on-camera press, etc. but everyone who has met Dan knows he is pretty convincing.

I think web strategy is very important to any crypto. Not just website, but presence. I mean just look at dogecoin, even for a meme their web presence is brilliant.

I've learned a few tips and tricks maintaining the websites for Peercoin and Primecoin. I can boast and say we pretty much have one one of the highest traffic levels of any official crypto website. Social media and a good core team is important too. Have to work with them to make sure the web stuff is in line.

Peercoin just did some intresting stats on marketing:
http://imgur.com/a/VZqbE

Notice how many people come from reddit(where we have little to no presence). Also notice how many people are funneled to a website from coinmarketcap, articles, and search engines.

I tried to lead that charge on the web front building Protoshares and the Invictus website. I was doing these all for bounties and freelance hours. Blogs, and stuff were already in the works, but suddenly Invictus didn't want my help anymore.  Still haven't gotten paid for some of the work that I did do. Was hoping someone would take over my role on the web stuff, but really haven't seen much work on that front after I stepped away.
