General Discussion / Re: [BUNKER NEWS] -- It's BitAwesome!
« on: February 01, 2015, 03:02:00 am »None - Fire prevention though - YES. This is part of the node update plans. The design of the shielded node making it an ideal solution for reduced oxygen atmosphere. This is a new technology only recently developed that will prevent fires from happening thanks to lack of oxygen in the node. Instead if there is such a condition it will smolder and aspirators will detect and alert for action.
Wow!
I've heard of this. Just enough oxygen to breathe, but not enough to sustain a fire. The British Library just installed this in their new National Newspaper Building. Check out an insane video of how cool it is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-30929009
Yes! That's the exact same system. That place is freaking amazing though! The engineering that went into that place in the video is awesome! We actually have found historical documents around the bunker too dating back to the 1950s and 60s. We put on display for tours an old 1962 paper we found in the ceiling while we were doing work on the lighting. It's so interesting to see the kind of stories they focused on back then. They even had a 'buy local' ad taking up almost an entire page!
Our system would maintain an atmosphere of 15% oxygen. So techs with no breathing problems can spend about 4 hours in there until they are going to start to feel light headed. That is more than enough time since most of any work should be done in pre-production. The original suppression system the military ran with was Halon. This is of course a banned substance now.
I spent a lot of time researching different fire suppression systems. I was almost completely sold on Novac 1230 until I read one story of a data center that had that system and a fire happened and it set it off. Afterwards all of their hard drives were trashed! From what I gathered, hard drives as you know operate in a positive pressure to keep them clean. The sudden discharge of the Novac 1230 cause an atmospheric change that was so dramatic it ruptured the drives pressure and caused them to become contaminated. Telling this story to other data center buddies they suddenly realized that could actually happen. Fire out, but bye bye data.. no thanks. I rather not have a fire in the first place. It will be another great feature for the bunker... as if you need more.
Sadly most other solutions are not environmentally friendly, or are CRAZY expensive. We likely will just have our regular building sprinkler system there just to make the fire marshal happy... but of coarse it will never be used.
The only other bunker that got into private hands was back in 2000. The owner talked about using it for movies, but ended up seeking to sell it to, of all folks, the Hells Angels biker gang. When DND got word of this, they ended up buying it back from the guy and then spent nearly $1 million having it demolished to the ground. Contractor that got hired to do the demolition noted it was the most difficult job he had to ever deal with because there was so much thick reinforced rebar everywhere. Back then people thought the bunker would be an excellent space for growing marijuana. Pretty sure that's what the Hells Angels thought too. Back then it was illegal, today you can be a licensed grower in Canada.
