I've restarted and reloaded the app many times but still don't have the option to select an existing account so I'm unable to claim my balance. Any ideas?

Did you exported key file ectually hold the OWNER and ACTIVE keys of your account?
You should do the following:
1) open bitshares 0.9.3 and enter the console
2) wallet_dump_account_private_key <accountname> owner_key
3) wallet_dump_account_private_key <accountname> active_key
4) take those two keys and import tham manually using the key import tool
5) you should now see an account that you can use to import your funds

Thanks. My problem is that (unlike the BTS wallet) the link to Existing Accounts doesn't display so I don't know how to navigate to the import tool:

How do I get to the key import tool in this wallet?

Click on the screw icon (setting) beside the lock icon on the top right. Click on the wallet link and you will see the import tool.
