how the gateway use id?domains?

I'm not sure if things go as intended with this massive name registration action going on right now.
It's been decided that "Names that contain a number, are longer than 8 characters, or contain no vowels are essentially free"
https://bitshares.org/technology/transferable-named-accounts/
This means all major domain names like "facebook.com" cost just BTS 0.15 because they don't qualify as premium.
Is this what was intended?
-
Also, if I recall it correctly BM once mentioned that having thousands of fake account names would put a lot of burden on hosted wallet providers in terms of RAM usage.
And that's what's happening right now - someone is buying thousands of names paying almost nothing for them while CNX is asleep.
Is @fav right to ignore this issue?
-
Even if just names and not real domains they could be used later for scam.
I'm very disappointed such thing can happen. This looks to be very amateurish for something aimed to become a major financial protocol.
-
Yeah... clearly a 20 something BTS for account registration would have been nice.. Could we vote for it easily ?
-
Yea looks like we have another retard spamming the blockchain, probably same guy as last time.
I'm surprised the account registration fee is so low tbh, it's probably the cheapest transaction we have. It makes sense in a way because faucet's won't require enormous amounts of funds to register users, but it does leave the door open for idiot spammers like this kdj.

@svk, it's highly unprofessional to call them "retards" and "idiots". They do it because they seek a business opportunity and only time will tell if that makes sense.
If someone is an idiot it's us that we let it happen by setting the fess so low.
I think BM's startegy (https://bitshares.org/technology/transferable-named-accounts/) assuming that
names that contain a number, are longer than 8 characters, or contain no vowels are essentially free
is fundamentally flawed.
-
If it was a mistake. they probably forgot the domain part. maybe they just thought that a "facebook" account would be valuable while a "facebook.com" wouldn't.

I disagree, the guy's an idiot, in the same way patent trolls are idiots. Even worse because the chances of someone ever paying him anything for these accounts are so remote that he's probably better off playing the lottery..
-
How long was beta test. I'm suprised such a ridiculous flaw appears right now. Do you really want to compete with ETH ? You should ask for a security audit if you want serious investors to put money in.

So you should design a coin for Disney World.
-
Can we do anything to stop it before BM wakes up?
It might be urgent if this is going to affect the RAM usage of hosted wallet providers.
If we are just losing potential fees - that's just plain stupid of us but we'll get over it.
If we are creating a technical barrier for hosted wallet providers by letting this continue - that's dangerous for the whole BitShares business.
But maybe I'm unnecessarily panicking - I'm not technical enough to make this judgement.

Yea I agree the fee should be higher.
-
We should ask ETH fanboys to all register as many name as they can. This will destroy this coin (and my investment) so easily.
How many BTS for 10 millions names ?
-
This can be changed with a shareholder vote. We should do it right now.
-
This can be changed with a shareholder vote. We should do it right now.
Don't we need the committee members to apply such a change?
Right now the committee consists entirely of the init nodes being under BM's control I guess.
-
I propose to delete accounts with less than 100 BTS one week after they are created if no transaction ever occured or no transaction for a year, and of course to higher creation cost.
-

That's what I mean. he needs to do a proposal, and we need to vote for it.
-
I mean :
Every account with less than 100 BTS (to be adjusted) and no transaction ever occured, one week (to be adjusted) after creation are deleted.
Every account with less than 100 BTS (to be adjusted) and one year (to be adjusted) without transaction are deleted (even if transaction occured one year ago).

Exactly. As usual. This is all so predictable.
I made lots of posts in the past saying they should increase the basic registration fee to avoid this, obviously with the names being sell-able now, even more so.
My advice now with any premium names is to make sure you rather start out too high than too low if you're going with a fixed pricing system.
Just so it's in the record, another trend I predicted which was scoffed at, is that we'll the see the .com extension becoming the most popular BTS variant of premium names. It will be interesting to see in a year or two if that ends up being the case.

Agreed. It was a mistake not to have 24h access to the committee members right after the migration so that we could react immediately.
Maybe this incident will not hurt us so much but it could've been something much more serious and right now our "contingency plan" seems to boil down to waiting for BM to wake up.
Not very professional for a USD 15 mln business. Another lesson learned I guess.

We should not change the rules retroactively. It'd hurt us even more.

According to Cryptomonex, 1 million accounts need 1 GB of RAM (and 150000 BTS for creation).
Imagine I'm a big competitor coin holder and I want to kill BTS. I could create 200 millions accounts for 30 millions BTS (150000 $). Is this a threat of not ? It is a true question, because I don't know the answer.
-
Change the newly created account fee to 20 BTS, and this issue should be solved.
-
1) register a new committee member that has this fees increased
2) get it voted to active
3) have more committee members voted active that also vote for higher fees
-
Change the newly created account fee to 20 BTS, and this issue should be solved.
Really ?
Imagine BTS start to be commercially used and this is occuring ? Do you mean that the delegates are able now to face this ? Or more likely they have to shutdown all servers and upgrade them with 248 GB RAM ? In this case how long will the network be off ? What would think our partners ?
In my opinion, upgrade the servers now to 248 GB and this issue should be solved. If an attacker wants to burn 1 milliion dollar to kill BTS credibility, you need 1TB RAM now. 1 million dollar is relatively low (5000 BTC) to kill a promising coin aimed to be number 1.

If we put the account creation fee at a higher level the problem is solved, and shareholder approval is all we need for that. Nobody can kill BTS in such a trivial way, you don't seem to grasp how much some people here are invested in BTS and will never let it die so stupidly, this isn't a stupid clone altcoin. At worse, there are no obstacle to hardfork the solution you propose, but it would be very bad PR... which we're used to now. Don't panick.
-
I will prepare a seperate committee proposal to change the account creation fee to 20 BTS, and create a commitee account this evening.
-
I'm not panicking I'm just thinking.
And what about an attacker from inside, I mean something able to get back creation cost ? Let's imagine a delegate being compromised. Then the attacker just have to create accounts from the delegate, so the fees return to him and the attack cost less (80% ?) ?
-
The name squatting continues.
@bytemaster, aren't we going to prevent it by raising the fees?
The current pricing policy doesn't make sense to me: we are charging BTS 20 for transferring funds but just BTS 0.15 for irrevocably polluting the blockchain with thousands of fake accounts.
Won't it affect the RAM usage of hosted wallet providers?

the register fee for any non premium account should be at least 100 BTS in my opinion.
edit: and excluded from life time cashback. names are not meant to be spammed
-
bts 0.x you have a then others can't reg b.a
bts 2.x you have a others can reg *.a a.* OMG
-
trans action network load 20bts for prevent spam attack
reg name network load just 0.14746bts
-

I disagree, the guy's an idiot, in the same way patent trolls are idiots. Even worse because the chances of someone ever paying him anything for these accounts are so remote that he's probably better off playing the lottery..

is there any dev member online?

Bytemaster is on it.

It makes a lot of sense imo. When BTS becomes a popular form of payment, most businesses would ideally want their payment address to be either 'CompanyName' or 'CompanyName'.com.

The fee is now 5.1 BTS
-
OK. I'm wondering what the damage is in terms of resources and also the number of names scooped up.

The fee is now 5.1 BTS
That is good.

bts 0.x you have a then others can't reg b.a
bts 2.x you have a others can reg *.a a.* OMG
why dont you guys read the migration guide??
Ther is NO hierarchy in names any more .. hency anyone can register any arbitrary name .. just like mail
-
The fee is now 5.1 BTS
So all accounts purchased for 0.15 BTS can now be sold for less than the current minimum price for up to a 30x profit! and that's assuming that the name sells for just under the lowest purchase price. In other words, if the name is cool enough to sell at a premium, then the profit would be greater than 30x
Not bad for a 1 day gain. It just might take some time selling and transferring the accounts.
Not true afaik .. account_updates (transfers) are different from account_create ..
Could cost 1m BTS if committee wanted/shareholder approved it

Can standard users pay this fee and register new accounts from the CLI or do you still need to be a lifetime member to register an account from the CLI?
-
Sorry for diverting the topic. But I really want to know how to register an account using cli_wallet
User guide says:
register_account alpha GPH4zSJHx7D84T1j6HQ7keXWdtabBBWJxvfJw72XmEyqmgdoo1njF GPH4zSJHx7D84T1j6HQ7keXWdtabBBWJxvfJw72XmEyqmgdoo1njF nathan nathan 0 true
But what exactly is GPH4zSJHx7D84T1j6HQ7keXWdtabBBWJxvfJw72XmEyqmgdoo1njF? Is it the public key of nathan or alpha? Where can I get the public key in the CLI interface?
Thanks.
