So with POW mining can we have two of the same wallets running clients on different machines mining? This obviously causes issues with DPOS but not sure about POW.

My thinking is it should be fine.

Yeah, there's no scheduling, so the fork resolution should work the same even if the conflicting blocks are from the same key.

I think is blockchain_list_blocks

That is correct.

I'm mining but when I restart the client it all goes away. I'm on Alpha.4, is there a newer one now?

Alpha.4 is the latest, you mean your balance goes away?  As though you're mining on minority forks?  How many connections are you getting?

Does this look like the chain you're on?

12 connections to the test network.  Mining is easy.  Free money.

I can't seem to get more than 5 connections, and difficulty is adjusting downward so I suspect I'm on a minority fork...

This assumes they're mining regardless of cost.  The price is set by anticipated usefulness, and miners will only mine if that anticipated usefulness exceeds the cost of mining.

If the anticipated usefulness drops after they've mined some, they may sell at a loss to reduce their losses.

I see what you mean. In that case they're incentivised to take a loss 'now' to mitigate risk of holding and losing more... But the price is still bound to oscillate around the mining cost.
Only to the degree that the mining cost correlates to the anticipated utility, I would think.

Excellent!  I think that 15 years from now, POW will be mostly dead.

Right now though, and perhaps for the next few years, there's a large market of people who demand it, and we might as well sell them what they want in a way that leads them toward better things instead of away from them.

DAC PLAY / Re: BitShares PLAY Snapshot on BTS 2014-12-08 !

many tancks for your answer,
I'm going to backup my wallet, but I have a doubt... I opened two accounts but I feel that this is a useless compilcation. Backups save all the accounts or just one? I would like to erase one account. Could you tell me how can I do it?

If you've just been familiarizing yourself with the wallet, and want to clean it out and start fresh before actually transferring funds to it, you can delete the "wallets" directory in the BitShares folder I mentioned last post, or just rename it to "walletsOLD" or something and BitShares will create a fresh new one next time you start.  Let me know if you've already put funds in the wallet.  What operating system are you running?

DAC PLAY / Re: BitShares PLAY Snapshot on BTS 2014-12-08 !
« on: November 25, 2014, 03:29:54 am »
Hello everybody,
I am new here and I need some help.
I bought BTS on Bter a couple of weeks ago and now I have the opportunity to partecipate at the snapshot of december. What I have to do? Put the BTS in my wallet, right? I must follow the instructions of Bter and send BTS at their account btercom? Why can't I send the BTS in my account directly? How the snapshot works? Are all the BTS in all the wallets becoming PLS? I have another question about my wallet? Where the private key is? I don't dare to put the money there since I am not completely sure that I have the full control of my wallet. I know you propably don't like me because a month ago I didn't even know that Bitshares exists and now I claim to be a shareholder like you. The only thing I want to say is, Bitshares seems to me like the open door toward freedom I dreamed for 41 years.

Many thanks to everybody,
Nicola

Welcome!

Yes, you need your BTS in your BitShares wallet by the 8th to benefit from the snapshot.  Go ahead and take a few minutes to explore the BitShares wallet before you withdraw to it, and back up your wallet.  Then when you're ready to withdraw, go to https://bter.com/myaccount/withdraw/BTS and paste in your account key (to find it in the BTS wallet, click "my accounts" on the left, then click your account name, and then click the "keys" tab...), enter your passwords and amount, and submit.

The PLAY snapshot won't take your BTS, or turn your BTS into PLS, it will just give you additional PLS proportional to the amount of BTS you hold when the snapshot occurs.  When PLAY launches, you'll be able to export keys from BitShares and import them into PLAY whenever you want to claim the PLS from the snapshot.

If you're on Windows, the private keys are in your user\AppData\Roaming\BitShares\Wallets directory, and also in any backups you export as .json files.  On Linux they're in your user/.BitShares/wallets directory.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say we like you just fine.  We're all very excited about this, and unshared excitement is wasted.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

I approved toast's delegate a while ago, but he's still not in the top 101.  Clearly I need more BTS.

I think this would really help people understand how to make long-term valuations for BTS. We pursue things that help us burn BTS so that we can eventually start getting paid for owning stake in a profitable autonomous system.

The mechanics of the dividend are not important except that it should be in bitUSD or bitGOLD.

For tax reasons I would prefer not to receive any BitUSD dividends. It makes things complicated legally. Just burn the BTS and you have a capital gains tax to pay if the price goes up which is lower than an income tax in some cases.

I prefer burning and I think it's also politically inappropriate to promote BitUSD over all other currencies. BitGOLD might be okay but GOLD is volatile and isn't BTS so it's not actual stake in the system. I do see that it might encourage people to hold BitUSD or BitGold and it has some strong points but I think deflation works for everyone without favoring any political currencies, specific BitAssets, or legal possibilities.

There is a lot of merit in this.

But eventually BTS is going to have to reset the share supply.

So just reset on a monthly basis to maintain a 2bn share supply.

BTS holders recieve BTS deposit on the first of the month; no need for bitUSD/GOLD etc.

I don't see why the share supply has to be reset. In fact I think developers need to stop messing with the share supply. Stability in the protocol for BTS token holders come from there being predictability in the share supply. Stop diluting, inflating, or otherwise adding insecurity to the mix when it's not necessary.

If you want to do cash dividends then set up a legal cooperative and distribute dividends to all who are members. If you're not going to do this then just burn the transaction fees and by increasing the burn rate when people sell their BTS they'll pay either capital gains or income tax.

The only time the share supply would need to be reset is if the price is so high as to inhibit usable granularity.  Meaning, if the price of one BTS gets to about $50,000 or more...

I don't anticipate this problem in the foreseeable future.

EDIT: Actually for market issued assets we probably need much finer granularity than that, so maybe $1000/BTS.

Indeed, there's no need for hostility.  Personally I think Sparkle will be unable to compete with BitShares due to POW inefficiencies, but if it serves as a stepping stone for those who think POW is the only way, that's great.  If everything else is copied straight from BitShares it will still be better than most Bitcoin clones.
