Title: brainkey in wallet is currently broken.
Post by: gamey on June 01, 2016, 09:43:59 pm

So at one point I made an account. I guess I didn't "backup" the web-cache because I'd never heard of backing up a cache ever. I thought it would back it up so I didn't rely on the web-service, when it actually backs up my web-cache.

I think I understand it now.  Your username + password is not sufficient if you clear the web-cache?  Is that true?

Regardless I decided to go with the brainkey.  So after digging the pictures of the brainkey off my phone  I try to restore via brainkey. In both chrome and firefox, windows and linux, I get "key.normalize_brain_key is not a function app.js 102"  That is firefox on windows.

On Chrome I get
vendors.js:2 Uncaught TypeError: key.normalize_brain_key is not a function

It should be real easy to replicate this bug, just go to create account and keep clicking through until you get to the brainkey option at the bottom.

Correct. Your username is your account name. Everyone can know it. Your password decrypts your wallet, but you need to back up the wallet. Otherwise you have nothing to decrypt.

When?  I would be willing to think I made a mistake, but it first failed on Chrome/linux.

So I go to my Windows machine and get the same problem in both Firefox and Chrome.

Did deal with it some days ago. In firefox it does not verify brainkey too.

If you imported any 0.9.3c account in this wallet maybe you need a normal backup, If I remember corectly the brainkey doesn't work in this case.

It still doesn't work. It appears that perhaps someone tried to fix it as the problem has changed. I can now type things into the box, (no errors) but when I click on the Create Wallet button on the bottom, nothing happens.  It would appear that whatever code that is supposed to enable that button is not tied into the brainkey verification properly.

To be clear - This is not a problem with the backend. I am not importing any keys or anything special.  I just cleared my cookies on firefox and it did not change anything. It accepts the brainkey and the text under it changes, but clicking on the button does not appear to start up the next step.

I noticed something similiar / maybe the same from another angle yesterday, while going over making sure all the brainkeys were correctly written down in my archives.

The archive matches the seed displayed by inputting the correct password in the wallet, however I cannot verify the brainkey, the button never becomes clickable, like it's still missing words.

I tried copy-pasting and just to be sure, also writing the words manually after visually comparing them (several times). It didn't work.

Could it have something to do with uppercase vs lowercase words?

This is a pretty serious regression.

You can just ignore the verify thing, it doesn't actually do anything, just checks if you've typed the same as what was shown to you. As long as you write down the key and store it safely you're good, you have your backup.

@svk but you cant restore it using openledger.....probably a bug but when I try to restore using openledger on chrome n firefox I cannot type/paste the brainkey in the field.

I'd imagine, though I haven't tried it, that in the same way, when attempting to recover a wallet by using the brainkey, it won't recognize the proper seed when it sees it.
