maybe he intall bts in d:\
but  data is still  save in c:\ by default
so when his OS is broke   bluescreen ,can't log in,
he use Ghost to restore the OS,then  all c:\ data  is gone
when he  run the bitshares  in d:\ ,wallet is gone.

Since we want to promote to the general population BTS, why not improve ease of use?

AFAIK the wallet and backups of bitshares are stored in the partition the os is installed, when you restore the partition of your os everything will work fine. This will probably not work if you backed up only the system files of the os and not the whole partition, in this case he had no clue about back ups and most probably he backed up his system before he installed bitshares.

Creating backups all over the place in order to protect the "newbies" is not a solution, my D: drive in my laptop might be used by my dual boot os and is probably infected or used by other people at workplace.

It seems that bitshares 2.0 will solve this, there should be no worries.

Someone decides to format his hard drive without backing up his data? really?

You either know what "backup" is or you don't, you can't protect someone that has no idea what  backup is.

//edit: ..and bitshares2.0 will fix this issue and make heavy use of a backup seed (brain key/backup key)

you should consider  newbie & low IT knowledge users
they are lazy & forgetfulness

if bts Automatic backup in  d:\bts Hidden directory & tell users
when they Accidentally reinstall system without wallet backup of c:\

bts reinstall, run, check&automatic mention  that  there is a backup in   d:\bts
would you like to restore it? newbie is saved ,avoid the loss.

I agree with this. It needs to be as user friendly as possible. That's a must.

Who relies on someone else to "autobackup" (didnt know that was a thing) their wallet?

Create backups on multiple usb sticks. You only have a backup on your C: drive?

Also I really should create a backup on CD to deal with the possibility of an EMP pulse.

not me ,a newbie on  www.weibo.com ask

bts wallet can't autobackup wallet file on different partition  except C:\
in windows always use C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\BitShares\wallets
if  newbie reintall the OS, he lose everything!!!
there should be  red WARNING on wallet create &autobackup in different partition

another problem:
manual backup to Directory of Chinese characters, the backup will collapse.
Same holds true for any other crypto token (most don't even have an autobackup feature) ..

In short: It is YOUR responsibilit to secure your keys and that is what is stated in the DISCLAIMER that you agreed to when you opened the wallet the very first time ..

btw. .. wallet_backup_create can indeed backup to ANY directory you want .. but you have to DO it!

I'm pretty sure he meant that they ran a backup program for the whole machine and saved it to different partition, the restored the machine. When the backup was applied, the wallet wasn't included.

So he wiped the machine without confirming he had a safe copy of the json.

Totally agree that multiple encrypted USB is a really good idea.
