General Discussion / Bitshares Wikipedia article
« on: May 14, 2014, 07:33:24 pm »
I would like to use this thread for our Bitshares wikipedia article.

Here we can propose and discuss changes

The current temporary page can be found at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Bitshares

I have been messaging the previous editor to try and speed up the review process.

If anyone knows any wikipedia editors who can help of with approval of the article that would be great.

General Discussion / Lets sort out these videos
« on: April 14, 2014, 10:43:13 am »
I was watching the video with Daniel Larimer and Charles Evans. I stopped half way and wanted to watch the other half another time. The problem is this particular video does not have a jump function so I would have to watch the whole thing from the start.

If all the videos were stored on a single Youtube channel it would be easier for people to browse through the videos.

A lot of the Bitshares videos are not on Youtube.

I am subscribed to 'Bitshares', 'Invictus Innovations' and 'Dan Larimer'.
All three channels just have a few videos, there is some redundancy and collectively they dont have everything.

Can we have everything uploaded onto say the 'Bitshares' Youtube channel. This will also help people to share it.

edit: IMP I believe that sometimes I3 is too modest about its accomplishments/does not remind the community about all the things it has already done/does not speak about everything it is doing.
e.g It is difficult to find all the videos so it is easy to underestimate the number of videos I3 has produced.
Also all the white papers are not in a single, easy to find place.

These are really cool thought experiments and pieces of work. Show off about them!

General Discussion / Proposal for alternative BTS prototype use
« on: March 29, 2014, 10:49:44 am »
I like the idea of BTS prototypes, families etc (Stan defined below).

I would like to propose that BTS prototypes be launched as a PoS altcoin honouring PTS/AGS holders. The DACs that then launch will honour via PoS the specific BTS prototype altcoin.

This way investors can speculate/invest in the gambling DAC industry without being forced to invest in bitshares-lotto.
What if the bitsharesLotto DAC is a huge failure but I believe the gambling DAC industry will do very well in the future. I should be able to invest in the industry without being forced to buy into a bad company.

If the BTS-prototypes are launched as DACs they cannot be used to properly evaluate the markets pricing on the future of the gambling DAC industry because the prototype shares price will be skewed by the profitability/success of the particular DAC.

Launching BTS-prototypes will also get tradable value into the hands of PTS/AGS holders. We can then speculate on the industry as a whole without having to worry about a single DAC. If the first DAC (say bitshares-lotto) goes to zero we will still have a viable BTS-prototype with pegs to the value of future gambling DACs.

"A BTS prototype is any crypto-asset that gets some of its value from the fact that its shares represent an interest in one or more future crypto-equity products. They are assets whose value is derived from the market’s anticipated future value of a product line, company or even an industry....So the five proto-families shown in our family tree are just the first prototypes of representative DACs in that family....BTS Prototypes are sample Decentralized Autonomous Companies (DACs)."

General Discussion / Content viewing DAC
« on: March 22, 2014, 10:18:36 pm »
I recently read an article about some software developed by a Harvard undergrad to change the way content is paid for and have been thinking about how it can be applied to a DAC.

The issue around content on the internet is that it should be freely accessible (pay walls deter people and slow access). But we still need to pay and incentivize content producers.

So we use adverts. The advertisers pay the content providers for eyeballs. Content providers make money and viewers pay through viewing adverts (cheap and easy).

The problem is the viewers themselves become the product that the content providers are selling to the advertisers. This is a system that allows for a diluted focus on user experience and content quality (as content providers need to satisfy advertisers too by providing info about users, targeting specific eyeballs etc.).

So I've got two half ideas on how to change this model.

1)

How about a DAC that allows users to pay for content by giving the content provider a bit of their computer's computational power or hash power.

So the users will need to be running the software client.

The user will go to a website to look for some content put up by the content provider.

The client will recognize a marker present in the website of the content provider. The marker provides the user's client with the content provider's public keys for making payments to.

The client will somehow select a profitable alt-coin or dac to contribute hashing power to. The user's computer will start contributing computational power to mining virtual currencies/shares. The fruits of this computational power will be sent to the content provider.

(but we need to make it a profitable venture so some of the fruits can be converted to shares in the content-viewing, DAC via a distributed exchange and then those shares are destroyed so as to pay dividends to shareholders of content-viewing, DAC  8))

2)

The content is accessed through the client and not through a web browser.

Content is hosted in a distributed manner (off the block-chain).

The content is downloaded and uploaded via a torrent network.

Viewers would browse content using the client (when clicking on a new page the client will find the torrent for that page and download it for the viewer).

Viewers must always be in 'mining' mode and contributing hash power to view content.

The viewers will be mining content-viewing, DAC shares.

Content-viewing, DAC shares mined over the period of time the viewer is viewing a  piece of content is given to the person who originally provided that content.

A portion of the Content-viewing, DAC shares can also go to the people who are hosting torrents for that specific piece of content.

If you want to view content without contributing hash power you can have your content automatically paid for using content-viewing, DAC shares you have stored on the client.

One content-viewing,DAC share will always be worth X amount of content viewing time at a Y hash-rate. (I have gone for viewing time instead of amount of content downloaded because the latter will just incentivize uploading more bulky content).

There will be a market for content-viewing, DAC shares because there will be value in being able to view content without having to give hash power.

Hope these ideas are food for throught :)

KeyID / Infrastructure Surrounding BitsharesDNS
« on: March 20, 2014, 10:21:02 am »
Bitcoin draws a lot of its value from the supporting infrastructure that surrounds it (retail services, exchanges, remittance service provides, wallets apps etc).

What might some of the infrastructure that builds ontop of bitsharesDNS be?
Browser plugins? User-friendly domain name registering companies?

General Discussion / Meme collection
« on: March 07, 2014, 10:02:30 am »
More memes would be a fun way to spread the word about I3.

Lets collect memes in this thread so that people can go through it for a laugh and to find something they may want to spread.

I know I've seen several on this forum but obviously now that I'm looking I cant find them.
A good site to make memes www.imgflip.com/memegenerator
I'll edit this post to include all memes at the top.

General Discussion / BitUSD as collateral
« on: March 03, 2014, 01:38:06 pm »
Instead of only allowing bisharesX shares to be used as collateral would there be value in allowing users to purchase bitAssets and use those as collateral to short other bitAssets?

If someone can purchase some bitUSD and then use that to short bitGOLD they would be able to leverage up on bitUSD and be able to short bitGOLD without having to worry too much about fluctuations in the value of bitsharesX shares.

The value of bitsharesX shares may fluctuate wildly (like bitcoin) in its early years making it difficult to trade. If users can use a more stable asset to take short positions this may encourage the behavior. The average FOREX or commodities trader should be able to switch their trading to bitsharesX without having to gain a huge understanding of bitsharesX shares and having to constantly monitor its value.

If we can use bitAssets as collaterol users can leverage up on any asset and short other assets while not having to worry about value fluctuations on bitsharesX shares (the price of which wont be pegged to anything in the way bitAssets are).

Or am I missing something completely?

General Discussion / Altcoins for journal articles
« on: February 25, 2014, 12:06:53 pm »
I was going through some academic literature and am constantly being bombarded with paywalls to access academic content. Surely there must be a better way for authors/publishers to make money without barring people from accessing knowledge.

A publisher would make journal articles freely available and launch an altcoin for each article it publishes (an alt coin where the price pegs the value of the research).

If the research becomes more influential and is therefore cited many times the value of the article increases and consequently the price of the alt coin.

Authors and publishers can profit from this through buying early/some kind of 'pre-mine' incentive etc.

EDIT: never-mind, I've been pointed to AP,DAC which is very similar

Technical Support / AGS and PTS balances on same address
« on: February 19, 2014, 11:40:08 am »
I am using a single wallet for keeping my PTS and for donating PTS to the AGS address for AGS.

Will the BitsharesX client be able to honour the correct amounts of BTS according the AGS and PTS on a single address or could this cause an issue.

Im trying to decide if I need to use separate wallets for AGS donations and for keeping PTS.

I also have bitcoin wallets that hold bitcoin and have been used to donate for AGS.

Thanks

General Discussion / Some clarity on the chains
« on: February 15, 2014, 07:26:59 pm »
I just want to make sure that I understand wants happening for the upcoming BitsharesX test snapshot.

So there was some discussion around how to make bitsharesX profitable for bitshare holders. Where one chain would have no interest charges, one variable interest and one 5% interest.

Is the snapshot on the 28th of Feb be for the no interest chain? Will new snapshots be taken at a later date for the variable interest and 5% interest chains?
What bitassets will be included in the chain to be launched on the 28th?

Thanks

Technical Support / FAQ for Protoshares
« on: January 04, 2014, 11:50:14 am »
Here is some information that can be included in a FAQs or simply used here to help beginners.

If you dont know anything about protoshares, this will explain what they are, how to get them, how to use them to claim shares as well as some info on protoshares wallet management.

assumes you know what a DAC is, if you don’t, click here http://invictus-innovations.com/i-dac

What are protoshares (PTS)?

PTS is a way to create a community around BitShares and other future DACs. PTS was launched as a crypto-currency that can be mined. What special about this crypto-currency is that for every PTS you own Invictus will reward you with corresponding shares in every new DAC that Invictus launches. This is done by forking the blockchain of a future DAC from the blockchain of PTS. In this way your public PTS address with be rewarded with shares of a new DAC and you can claim these shares using your private key.

Essentially PTS functions as a social contract between Invictus and PTS holders.

The really cool thing is that this social contract can be used by DAC creators other than Invictus. Other DAC creators would do this so that they can gain the attention of the PTS community. A good example of this is the launch of Memory coin where the Memory coin creators honoured PTS holders with 1% of total memory coin money supply.

To see some more information about PTS check out the website: www.protoshares.com

How do I get some PTS?

The easiest way to obtain some PTS is to purchase them through an exchange.

Currently https://www.cryptsy.com/ and https://bter.com/ offer PTS exchanging services.

Cryptsy is a new exchange and can sometimes be slow to execute trades, there have also been issues with withdrawals and deposits where funds can take up to a day to show up. Cryptsy charges 0.01PTS for withdrawals.

Bter is a more established exchange. It is also faster to execute trades but charges a hefty 0.1PTS fee for withdrawals.

Important: To reduce exchange risk: Do not trade with high volumes of BTC/PTS on an exchange at any given time. Instead make a small deposit, trade it and withdraw. If this is successful, repeat.

Why must I withdraw my PTS to a PTS wallet?

There is risk in storing your PTS on an exchange so its best practice not to do this.

In addition you wont get any BitShares (or shares in any other DACs) if you keep your PTS on the exchange. This is because when Invictus launches a DAC it will reward PTS holders with shares in the new DAC by rewarding the addresses which contain the PTS. If your PTS is stored on an exchange, the exchange’s PTS address will receive your BitShares.

PTS wallet management

How do I safely store PTS on a PTS wallet/client?

You can download the client for MAC or Windows or download and compile the code from here www.protoshares.com.

Note: I prefer to use MAC as there are less security issues.

Run the client and allow it to sync with the network.

Before you send any PTS to your wallet, you first need to encrypt the wallet. You can do this by clicking on the ‘settings’ tab and then ‘encrypt wallet’.

It will ask you to type in a password (encryption key) twice. Use a password of at least 32 characters. It is best to not use any real words or patterns but a random string of letters (in lower case and capitals), numbers and characters such as $@^&*

Important: Do not save your password on your computer or type it into any program. Your password should be written down on good old fashioned paper. You write the password down twice on two different pieces of paper for storage in different locations. DO NOT LOOSE THIS PASSWORD OR YOU WILL LOOSE YOUR PTS.

How do I backup my PTS wallet?

You can create a backup of your wallet by clicking on the ‘file’ tab then ‘backup wallet’.

Just to be 100% sure also backup your wallet by making a copy of your wallet.dat file found in %AppData%/protoshares on Windows and ~/.protoshares on Linux.

The .protoshares folder is a hidden folder.

To make it visible on mac check out this link: http://www.mikesel.info/show-hidden-files-mac-os-x-10-7-lion/

To make it visible on windows check out this link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/show-hidden-files-in-windows-7/

Store your backups in multiple off-line, off-computer locations. You can store it on flash drives and cds which can be stored at different locations (such as home and work).

Once you have backed up your wallet. You can delete the wallet.dat file found in the .protoshares folder. This will remove your wallet from your computer making your wallet less vulnerable to hackers. Hackers may be able to get into your hard drive but they will find it allot harder to get into your desk at work.

Note: Store your wallet.dat file and pass-phrase separately. So that if someone gets hold of one they still wont be able to get your PTS without the other.

Importantly: you should refresh this backup of your wallet.dat file at least every 99 transactions.  You need to do this because the wallet starts out with a pool of 100 key pairs that are used for transactions that require new key pairs.  Once you have used up the 100 key pairs your wallet can create new key pairs when syncing with the network. This new wallet with refreshed key pairs should then be saved. IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS YOU CAN LOOSE PTS!

How do I restore my PTS wallet from a backup?

If you need to gain access to your PTS do the following:
•   Install the client
•   copy your wallet.dat back into the .protoshares folder (replacing the wallet.dat file that will be there)
•   Sync with the network and you should see your transactions and balance.

Note: Only keep your wallet.dat file in your .protoshares folder when you want to have access to your PTS. Otherwise keep it offline for safety.

How will I claim BitShares (BTS) using PTS?

Invictus is developing a user friendly software where you would simply download the BitShares client and then point it at your PTS wallet.dat file to collect your BTS.

After collecting my BTS what do I do with my PTS?

I would advise you keep them! PTS has value because it functions as a social contract. May more DACs may come and honour the social contract, thus you are earning a stake in a new industry of DACs.

Note: Compare this to being able to buy a piece of every future internet based company when the internet just started out.

If you found my advice useful, consider buying me a beer :)

Technical Support / Is there advantage to holding AGS over PTS
« on: January 03, 2014, 07:02:58 pm »
I am just covering my bases and making sure that I havnt missed out on anything.

My understanding is that owning 1 PTS is just as valuable as holding 1 AGS.

And future DACs (such as BitShares) will reward PTS holders and AGS holders in the same manner?

I currently hold a few PTS and have no AGS. Is this okay (besides the currently favorable PTS to AGS exchange rate)?

General Discussion / Escrow, DAC
« on: December 20, 2013, 02:49:05 pm »
a DAC providing an escrow service.

It could function in two ways:

1)
The client is launched along with a new cryptocurrency called EscrowShares.
People would mine escrow shares, which are the only means of using the service. Thus, hopefully the value of escrow shares will increase as the service gets used.

Customer will pay Merchant using EscrowShares for delivery of a product but the EscrowShares are first held by the network. Upon receiving the product Customer sends a signal to the network that releases the EscrowShares to Merchant.

A percentage of the transaction is taken by the network as payment for the service. This percentage is then distributed among EscrowShare holders and miners.

2)
The DAC makes use of bitcoin for transactions.

Customer uses Escrow, DAC to send bitcoins to Merchant, but the bitcoins are first held on the bitcoin network by Escrow, DAC.

The DAC creates new bitcoin public and private keys for each escrow transaction and holds the bitcoin received from the customer on this address.

Once the customer receives the product from the merchant, the customer sends a signal to the Escrow, DAC network and the bitcoin is released to the Merchant.

A small percentage of the transaction is taken (in the form of bitcoin), and is distributed among persons running the client (which is needed to secure the network and process transactions).

Hope the community finds this interesting and I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Together we could turn this rough idea into something cool and useful.
