General Discussion / Auto updating the GUI is really annoying
« on: April 22, 2015, 01:41:33 pm »
It asks me if i want to update to 0.8.1-a when I am halfway through entering my password at the login screen. So then I have to press No and delete and start again.  >:(

Also what is the point of it if it only updates the GUI?

I always compile from source myself anyway so I would prefer it didnt exist. Polling bitshares.org for updates just seems like a central point of failure.

Is it possible to make it optional?

Look what happens when I click the Deposit page on Bter.com, we need a page like this in the web-wallet:

Bter generated a BTC deposit address its user. Metaexchange's API could generate a deposit address for the web-wallet user, and he wouldnt even have to know hes using Metaexchange.

Im sure everything Im saying is obvious but its good to refresh where our priorities should be.

Paul, Im not sure why I want a refund address feature. I used Metaexchange and was happy.

Wouldnt it be a much more useful to help the web-wallet guys integrate Metaexchange behind the scenes into a new Deposit/Withdraw page on the web wallet?

An easy deposit system is the most urgent thing that the web wallet is lacking right now. Its just not as integrated as a regular altcoin exchange.

So they claim that BitAssets are synthetic, but then they propose an exchange that trades Bitcoin against Nubits. So they want you to believe that collateral guaranteed by a blockchain is more synthetic than the promises made by anonymous custodians who promise to keep collateral and buy back your Nubits.

I am impressed with how they managed to keep it going for so long - they have even reduced their supply of Nubits just like BitUSD does.

In other news, our friend Rune is also giving us competition for pegged crypto:

Middle-man Replacement -- instead of paying fees to a single middleman you may pay the fee to a decentralized system that gives them back to shareholders (potentially yourself) :)

Well 0.9.0 is replaying the blockchain for the last 20 minutes (at 65% now). I had hoped the db changes would alleviate this.

git checkout bts/0.9.0-rc1
make forcebuildweb

Code: [Select]
The source directory

    /source/bitshares/libraries/fc/vendor/websocketpp

does not contain a CMakeLists.txt file.

Am I missing something?

So does this mean you cannot earn yield just holding bitUSD, you need to put it to bond market to earn yield, right?
Does this apply to all bit assets like bitBTC?, bitCNY? and what about BTS bond market?

That is the BTS bond market. You can easily lend out all of your BitAssets at any rate you choose, with the collateral requirements you choose from the lender. Most competitive rate will be the first to be borrowed. Its equivalent to Bitfinex liquidity providing.

You lend out BitBTC, and someone borrows it so that they can short BitBTC/BitUSD, paying you interest in the process.

Also I imagine there would be no reason not to have all your BitUSD available on the bond market at all times - might as well make your money work for you.

Thats how I understand it anyway.

Edit: Oh I see youre asking if you can put BTS on the bond market as well? I dont see why not. Someone might be super bearish and buying BitUSD is not enough for him.

If there is any way for DNS to work, teaming up with a smaller company with a browser like this would be it. Mind you they have 110 employees, so even thats a stretch.

Market symmetry is important.  Charging interest to shorts will reduce the demand for shorting while complicating things.   The only interest rate I could see making sense is a GLOBAL interest rate charged on all shorts put in place to govern the total issuance of all BitAssets backed by BTS.

Yield on USD is best accomplished by a bond market with fixed terms.  BitUSD == checking, bond == CD.

I am so excited about the bond market. Being able to lend out (from my wallet) my BitUSD at a rate I choose so that anyone can borrow it to buy BitBTC with leverage - that will be huge. If we can make that super easy in the web wallet then there is no reason we cant get a $4.5million daily transaction volume:

It's that simple. I often wonder where BTS would be now if it had kept a small standalone fast wallet around while the behemoth client was worked on and released separately.

I think in the long run the web-based client will attract more users. Choosing to use web technologies was a stroke of genius.
