Post by: roadscape on March 11, 2015, 12:55:22 am
BitShares Peer to Peer Tour - USA, Spring 2015

In two weeks, we’ll be hitting the road and taking a very roundabout route to Blacksburg Virginia,
one of the biggest BitShares hotspots in the USA. The plan is to connect with community members
face-to-face, share stories, and document the heart behind the movement. We’ll be live-blogging
and filming along the way.

With our sense of adventure and hilariously meager funds, this trip is sure to include a lot of hijinks
over a period of 3 weeks and 3,000+ miles (5,000 km). We’re still working out the details but many
community members have graciously offered us places to stay. Let us know if you’d be willing to
help along the route!

Here’s the plan so far:
(http://i.imgur.com/qGAdLlZ.png) (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Minneapolis,+MN/Madison,+WI/Chicago,+IL/Detroit,+MI/Philadelphia,+PA/Washington,+DC/Blacksburg,+VA/Nashville,+TN/Minneapolis,+MN/)

Arrival Dates
Sat 3/21 Madison, WI - @crypto_prometheus
Sun 3/22 Chicago, IL - @solomon & more
Mon 3/23 Detroit, MI - @robrigo
Wed 3/25 Philadelphia, PA - @riverhead & more
Sun 3/29 Washington, DC
Thu 4/2 Blacksburg, VA - @dan, @stan, @adam & devs
Thu 4/9 Nashville, TN - @fuzzy

On this trip we’ll be conducting interviews and asking a lot of questions.
What do you want to know? Who do you want to see?
Any points on the way we absolutely cannot miss?

Get in touch if you can meet up.
Hope to see you on the road! 8)

Sadly this route doesn't include what likely would be the most awesome part of the trip :)

But I am sure you will make due and have all kind of a awesome results.  +5%

I know I know...! We really want to make it up there!  Alas this particular journey is somewhat constrained by time and resources.

We intend to make a separate journey at some point which would take us through Toronto, Montreal, and to The Diefenbunker!
and who knows...  Cass has already suggested our next route..  ;)

Yeah, It's going to be a great way to start this journey.

If you want, we'll 'customize' one of these for you --> http://cryptofresh.com/products/25 (http://cryptofresh.com/products/25)  :)

We'll write something more about how you can help us along our journey but one way you can do it is definitely by buying a shirt!

Good question!  We'll have to check with Fuzzy... We're arriving Nashville on the Thursday the 9th, so depending on a few factors we could be in St. Louis on the 10th or 11th.  I presume there's a mumble on the 11th which would be a great day to recap our journey perhaps, but we've yet to figure out the final days of this journey.  We'd love it if you made the journey to write yourself into this script though Thom!  We have a place to stay in St. Louis too, I believe.

With our `Peer to Peer` Tour, we hope to tell the story of those who are working hard at bringing this vision to life and in so doing strengthen the resolve of our community to go the distance.

Taking on this documentary journey is a big undertaking for us.  This is not a vacation.  We’ll be working nonstop for 3 weeks to capture on film the stories of this incredibly unique community so that we can show the world BitShares means business!

We’ll be away from home for 3 weeks, which brings a lot of challenges. However, we feel it is essential to meet the members of the community we are working and organizing with. And the footage we capture will be invaluable.

Thanks to our friends and family along the way, we are able to do this on a shoestring budget.

Our gas/food/lodging budget is $1,700 for 3 weeks on the road.

We are looking for sponsors who may be able to help us defray costs and acquire any of the equipment below which will dramatically improve the quality of our work.  We’ll purchase what we can and work with what we have, but every contribution will bring us closer to a bona fide production setup.. These are the highest-priority items.

Shopping List
------------------
Tascam Recorder - $300
Shotgun Microphone - $149
GoPro   - $200
Boom - $100

To transform our quality DSLR into a film camera.
Camera adapters, gears, caps & rings - $230
Matte Box Kit - $309
Follow Focus - $449
Adaptor Bar System for DSLR - $219

Edit: → Xeldal has agreed to fund the purchase of our much needed film gear through BitsharesBreakout.

So if you are inspired by what we are doing and want to contribute, please do so through  bts ID: ‘bitsharesbreakout’ with the memo ‘filmgear’.

And if you haven’t already done so, please VOTE for fund.bitsharesbreakout

1) If you guys have an unlimited data plan on one of your smartphones, it would be awesome to do a Hangouts Live with people along the way. Maybe even while you're in the vehicle  driving down the road. Nothing beats live feeds with random discussion on road trips.

2) Show people how Bitshares pays better than banks. Banks pay around 0.3% interest right now, right? bitSilver pays over 2%.
The dollar is depreciating and Bitshares is appreciating.
Holding gold is great, but holding bitGold pays AND will follow the gold price too as price suppression lets up.

3) Take a laptop and demo the wallet.bitshares.org site over wifi.

4) Hand out Bitshares stickers or other goodies.

5) Put a giant "Powered by BitShares" sign in the back window.

Wish I could offer you guys a room too.
Say hello from Germany for me! :)
Prost!

Greetings from the mighty city of Chicago, whose streets have borne countless struggles for freedom and liberty!

On the first day of Spring, with all last minute preparations made and film gear in the car, we hit the dusty trail east from Minneapolis to Madison WI for our first meeting with Crypto_Prometheus and Solomon.  These were to become the monumental ‘lake-house sessions’...

Since filming was... somewhat waylaid yesterday...  ::)  We're extending by a day in Detroit.

We'll be shooting in Philly on Friday 3/27 and Saturday 3/28, with optional NYC excursion / writing and editing time on Sunday 3/29.
I'm hoping to do some interviews in Center City @ Rittenhouse Square, and at the Liberty Bell.

Let us know which day is better for you Riverhead!  We're looking forward to it!

Detroit is pretty rad!  Another proper update coming tonight!

Detroit feels like meeting an old friend for the first time.  There is something in these streets reminiscent of the deep heart of West Philly, and the sprawling reaches of Oakland California, but Detroit has a cadence all it’s own.  Here is a great testament to the spirit of the human family, set against the reckless caprice of industry.

And here we met the next denizen of our community, Robrigo.  Being greeted with dinner and marvelous tunes after a day of driving was most welcome, and intriguing DAC-centric conversation carried us into late night....

If you want to meet up or have any suggestions for where we should point our cameras, hit us up!

Gentso & Riverhead are waiting to hear from you on where and what time in Philly you want to meet on Saturday. Gentso is coming from quite a long ways outside the city so he needs to know to plan accordingly.

Also, in case you hadn't heard your cryptofresh site is down.

Thanks Thom!  We're in touch with Riverhead to coordinate.  Cryptofresh will be back up soon!  In addition to our delegate nodes, cryptofresh needed updating, and with everything going on we got two out of three handled.  Lot's to juggle!

They are in Philly right now. I've had the enormous pleasure of hanging out with Bitscape, Roadscape, and Robrigo these past few days. Amazing people; I'll be sad to see them leave.

Looking forward to seeing the finished film. For a free country it's shockingly hard to find a place to film without being harassed hahah.

Do we have any highly-knowledgeable BitShares people here that are also anarchists? (yes, I'm one too)

ie: https://youtu.be/75k2pQHaB1g
If I was more BitShares-knowledgeable, I'd do it, but if there are any other anarchists here who could be interviewed about BitShares, please contact me, thanx :)
I may be able to arrange a skype interview on Jeff's show.

Well Ken, Anarchism is one of those sneaky ism's which makes peoples brains turn off when they hear it... It's a label which describes me just as well / poorly as Taoist, or Yogi, i suppose, but i don't generally identify with labels of any kind.  There are so many flavors of anarchism.  Yes, I am hugely informed by the likes of Peter Kropotkin, Emma Goldman, as well as Lao Tzu, Patañjali, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, Bruce Lee, and Mr. T .. lol.  So long as Jeff doesn't mind me deconstructing every ism including anarchism, then I'd be happy to consider being a guest on his show. :)

Highly knowledgeable?  Politics, theory, DPOS, I might know a thing or two, but i'd need to brush up on any deep technical intricacies if he wanted to go down those rabbit holes.

Let's get through the Bitcoins and Gravy interview and maybe we can talk Anarchast next.  ;)

Understood.

Jeff Berwick, the host of Anarchast regularly has people on his show of different anarcho* flavors and even some guests who still will not openly call themselves an Anarchist, even on the show itself.

I hate labels too. If you had to label me, the closest terms I have found to my beliefs are: anarcho-syndicalist, agnostic, libertarian, voluntaryist. It's nearly impossible to put just one label on someone. Jeff gives you the chance to cover all your beliefs and then some.

From: http://anarchast.com/about

"Anarchist.  Libertarian.  Freedom fighter against mankinds two biggest enemies, the State and the Central Banks."

"Jeff's background as an entrepreneur dates back to his founding of Canada's largest financial website, Stockhouse.com, in 1994. In the late ‘90s the company expanded worldwide into 8 different countries and had 250 employees and a market capitalization of $240 million USD at the peak of the “tech bubble”.  To this day more than a million investors use Stockhouse.com for investment information every month." - yeah, I think he'll like BitShares.

"He went on to visit nearly 100 countries over four years and did and saw things that no education could ever teach.   He met and spoke with a plethora of amazing people, from self-made billionaires to some of the brightest minds in finance – as well as entrepreneurs from a broad range of backgrounds and locations from tech companies in southern China to resource developers in Mongolia, Thailand, Russia and Chile.  He also read everything he could find on how the world really works… politically and financially.  A pursuit he continues to this day." - yeah, I think he'll like BitShares.

Let me know.. :)

We'll see what time you end up in St. Louis. I have an important engagement here on April 11th, a Saturday, but aside from that I'm open.

I have to travel 5 hrs to get there, so I at least need to know which day you're going to be there.

So as you get closer, perhaps by the time you reach the BitShares team in VA, you might know more accurately when you'll arrive in St. Louis.

Depending on timing I might have 1 or 2 people come along with too.

Keep us posted guys!

Naturally, we will be offering up a virtual smorgasbord of fresh roadkill du jour.

First they found the World Wide Web and started to wake up.  A new narrative and context became apparent which prompted a deeper search for truth and freedom.  They discovered Satoshi's Bitcoin, arriving in droves to explore the first cryptorush.  But Bitcoin was only the beginning of the journey.  There was something missing.  Bitcoin was potentially a Trojan Horse.  So the search continued for something incorruptible and unstoppable.  That's when they found Bytemaster & Co.  It was BitShares 'that ignited a rebellion.'

Hey Thom, we haven't yet deviated from the dates posted in the OP... :P  I don't know why people keep asking when we're going to be where, we're running like a clock!

However, onto St. Louis... We'll be arriving in St. Louis from Nashville on the evening of the 11th, and my goal for the following morning on the 12th is to head for Alton IL, and visit the grave and monument of my cousin, the journalist and abolitionist http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elijah_Parish_Lovejoy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elijah_Parish_Lovejoy), where I would like to reflect on a few things as we begin to draw this grand journey to a close

If you are able to meet us on the afternoon of the 12th, I believe that's going to be the only window we have, and likely not a huge one.  Let us know if you'll be able to make it for a short visit on that day.  We will have been on the road for 23 days as of April 12th, and fairly ready to be back at our respective homes again.

We've got two full days left in Blacksburg and lot's of filming to attend to yet!

So I don't respect your opinion on this quite as much as I might on other topics.  But growl away - maybe that's what keeps you from getting ulcers?

Well my friend, when you have to travel 4 - 10 hours (round trip) to a rendezvous most people tend to want  confirmation of the place & time of the rendezvous. Nothing mysterious about that.

I will commit to the 10 hour trip to meet you. My friends live in south St. Louis & Alton is far north. This prompts me to ask a question or two about the best place to meet:

1) Where are you staying in St. Louis?
2) What route do you plan to take as you leave?

My preference would be to meet somewhere on the east side, presuming you will take 55 north to leave, and that makes it relatively easy to make a quick stop in south St. Louis afterwards on my way home.

I can leave home around 9AM and get into St. Louis around 2PM Sunday. If that sounds good to you I'll plan on it. Let me know & I'll PM you my cell # for real time comm.

I just want to add my 2 cents, for the benefit of anybody ever reading this thread.... Now or 3 years from now.

This tour is one of the most idiotic things, I have  ever seen!

:)  Love ya Tonyk2!  We'll come visit you one day too if you want.  When bts is at >$.10 and everyone's mood is different.

It's been a great trip, and there's a lot being accomplished!

Hey everyone, just a quick update from the road.

We are an hour from returning home to Minneapolis. We've driven 4372 miles (7036 kilometers) over 24 days, with 13 interviews from community members and core devs in 7 states.

It's been a long and inspiring journey! We learned so much on this trip and captured some really great footage along the way.

We'll post a more extensive update this evening, when we've had a chance to rest and recover for a moment.

We may be exhausted, but we're more excited about the prospects of BitShares than ever before!

Just a quick warning.  If you are thinking Beyonce is going to get you at the door,  you might be disappointed.  :P

I actually wish we could have extended the time you stayed in Nashville. It was great to be part of history :)

A little less glad to know about Roko's Basilisk...
though I believe there would be other powerful and equally benevolent AI's to counter its steely gaze...

LOL, yeah... sorry we should stop talking about the Basilisk, it's just wrong...
Personally I subscribe to Fesenko's Basilisk, or Lovejoy's Basilisk, the more benevolent forms in that line of thinking.. ;)

It was really great to meet you Fuzzy, and I definitely want to be back through Nashville!  What an awesome town, we didn't get to experience enough of it.  Bummed we managed to forget the group photo, but at least we've got a few stills from the interview. :)

Ok @bitscape and @roadscape, I just sent you an email, hope it goes thru ok.
John Barrett at "Bitcoins and Gravy" (Let's Talk Bitcoin!) has agreed to facilitate an interview with you when you pass thru Nashville.
I cc'd him on the email to you so please do a reply-to-all so you guys can work out a time to meet.
If you need anything at all, I'm always within reach.
Good luck! :)

Well, for one thing, it's getting them an interview on Bitcoins and Gravy on the Let's Talk Bitcoin channel. And it builds community spirit. And may produce footage for valuable u-tube exposure.
So I don't respect your opinion on this quite as much as I might on other topics.  But growl away - maybe that's what keeps you from getting ulcers?

Shameless, I know guys, but I could really use your Votes.
@DataSecurityNode got my Delegate all setup and running this morning! :)

I've got a lot more in the works for BitShares too as you'll see around the forum and in my Delegate Proposal:
