i agree with the core dev team's focus on infrastructure; getting the system right is critical. wallets and other user apps should come from new entrants to our system who find sufficient value in the infrastructure to start designing their own businesses off of it.

Yes,backend infrastructure is important, but I've seen a lot of emphasis on increasing adoption through referral programs etc. And I won't be making any referrals  nor do I expect wide adoption without a working wallet with a simple and reliable update/installation procedure.

Thom, Thanks for the thoughtful and informative reply.

BitShares 2.0 will have a smooth, stable and reactive web wallet .. current source can be seen in github and looks (and feels) awesome ..
Just wait for BTS2.0 to arrive!

Thanks. I really hope that's true and if it is I'll be a lot more optimistic about Bitshares. In the meantime, I'm just going to sit tight and wait.

I’ve been following and investing in Bitshares for a couple of years now. I like the great ideas and the great development team and the tremendous potential and have been gradually accumulating BTS.  I realize that the developers work very hard for very little and I am hesitant to complain. However I am really frustrated by the Windows client installation procedure, and I doubt I am the only one, and I can’t help but think these problems are having a big negative effect on Bitshares adoption.  I cringe whenever there is a mandatory upgrade because I know it won’t go smoothly and will inevitably result in me having to download the blockchain yet again thus taking up a lot of time and using up a big portion of my monthly download allowance (I have a satellite connection with monthly download limits).

Bitshares has lots of great features and there are great ideas to enhance it even further. But without a functioning wallet, I can’t really use them. It does not matter how many great features you have, if updating the client is so painful, not very many people are going to go to the trouble.

Bitshares is beset with a number of problems and they’ve been talked about before on this forum as well as elsewhere, but IMO, far and away the number one problem with Bitshares and it isn’t close, is the lack of a stable wallet software. This needs to be fixed BEFORE focusing on increased adoption. In spite of all of the great features, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else until there is stable wallet software, and at this point I’m skeptical about whether such a wallet will ever actually exist.

I am currently running 9.1. Apparently there is now a 9.2 that is only required for delegates. I’m not a delegate, but in any event my software no longer syncs.  I’m not a software expert, but I have installed lots of software over the years and never encountered the problems that I have encountered with Bitshares. I’m pretty sure that if I wanted to spend a few hours or days fighting with it and use up a lot of my monthly download allowance then I could eventually get it working and synched. But it’s just not worth it to me anymore.

I am using Windows and I get that technically inclined users think that the Windows operating system is crap, but it’s what I know and am comfortable with. And it’s what a lot of other people use also, and we’re not going to switch operating systems just so we can use Bitshares.

I get that making a robust wallet that works across multiple operating systems is hard. But other crypto-currencies have done it. I have been updating my full node software for the bitcoin core wallet for several years now and upgrading has always gone flawlessly. Yeah, I know bitcoin has a much bigger user base and more developers who contribute to it, but I also own several other alt-coins and have not experienced anywhere near the frustration installing and updating the alt-clients that I have had with Bitshares.

I won’t bother going through the litany of problems I’ve experienced with software upgrades over the past year or so. Some of them are already documented in prior posts but there are many more that I’ve managed to (painfully) work through myself and have never posted about. Users try to help, but it’s just a frustrating time-consuming experience all around. There really needs to be an easy-to-find set of installation instructions with trouble-shooting procedures if something goes wrong, but unfortunately the software is so unstable I don’t think that’s possible.

I don’t have the technical skills to actually fix any of these problems but if I were convinced that there was a serious effort to solve these problems, I would probably be willing to do some beta testing and report on bugs and try different solutions but that’s about the extent of my ability.

Since we are using DPOS, it is less important for me to run a full node so a reliable SPV or web-based wallet would be fine for me as long as I maintained control over my own shares.

For now I’m just going to sit on my BTS, but I don’t plan to buy any more nor do I plan to recommend it to anyone else unless and until the wallet problems are solved.

General Discussion / Re: BitShares 0.9.0 Feedback

I have been gradually buying BTS and really want Bitshares to prosper. I also realize that the developers work very hard for very little and I am hesitant to complain. However I am really frustrated by the Windows client installation procedure, and I doubt I am the only one, and I can’t help but think these problems are having a big negative effect on Bitshares adoption.  I cringe whenever there is a mandatory upgrade because I know it won’t go smoothly and will inevitably result in me having to download the blockchain yet again thus taking up a lot of time and using up about 30% of my monthly download allowance (I have a satellite connection with monthly download limits). There really needs to be an easy-to-find set of installation instructions with trouble-shooting procedures if something goes wrong.
Here are a few things I have experienced:

When I start the client I get a window that says “Starting Bitshares” but nothing happens even if I wait for a half hour.

I have tried deleting config.json and letting the system recreate it. This has never helped.

I get a Critical Error Message Window: An error occurred while trying to start. Please try restarting the application. This, of course, never helps.

Sometimes it will tell me that my database needs to be re-set. This never seems to help either.

Also, I don’t understand what the “Check for Updates” option. It always says No updates are available, but when the synchronization gets stuck, it’s usually because an upgrade is required, and it turns out that there is an upgrade available.

What I usually end up doing is to:
1)   Make a backup copy of C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Bitshares
2)   Delete the whole C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Bitshares folder
3)   Start Bitshares client and then close it when it asks me to create a new wallet
4)   Copy the wallets subfolder back into: C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Bitshares folder
5)   Start the client again and wait for it to sync up the blockchain again
6)   Make sure that my bitshares balance is the same as it was before the upgrade

General Discussion / Re: BitShares 0.7.0 Feedback
« on: March 23, 2015, 03:31:20 pm »
After installing 0.7.0  on Windows I am getting the following message:

"An error occurred while trying to start. Please try restarting application."

Regardless of how many times I restart or try again after rebooting computer, I continue to get this same message.

I have also tried renaming config.json. When I restart it creates a new config.json file but I continue to get the same error message.

Any suggestions on what to try next?

General Discussion / Re: Bter suspended
« on: February 15, 2015, 09:08:49 pm »
I've seen several posts stating that bitcoins were stolen and not bitshares and therefore customers with BTS balances at Bter should be ok, but I wonder if that's true. Assuming Bter isn't able to recover from this and goes into bankruptcy, isn't it likely that all of its deposits would be pooled and divided among all account holders/creditors rather than having just the customers with BTC balances bear the whole loss?

General Discussion / Re: Dilution of Bitshares

Ander,

Thank you for that very clear explanation. It is by far the best and most easily understood explanation that I have ever seen, and the whole thing makes much better sense to me now.

FWIW, I agree with gamey, that some version of this should go on the wiki.

General Discussion / Dilution of Bitshares
« on: December 28, 2014, 05:56:41 am »
I am trying to understand how share dilution works with bitshares.

With bitcoin, a new block is created on average every 10 minutes and 25 new bitcoins are created, which results in a current inflation rate of about 10%. 6 x 24 x 25 x 365 / 13,650,000 = 9.6%.

According to bitsharesblocks.com, the share supply of bitshares fluctuates. There are currently about 2.5 billion shares and the 24 hour supply change is about 50,000 which results in an inflation rate of about .7%.  50,000 x 365 /2.5 billion = .7%.

I understand how inflation works in bitcoin but I don't understand how it works in with bitshares. How are new bitshares created, where do they come from, and what is the formula that determines how many and when they are created. Also, I read somewhere that there is a hard cap of 3.5 billion bitshares.  If that is correct, where would I find the documentation for it?

Although I’m sure these questions have already been answered, I wasn’t able to find an answer that I understood in the forums, so any links would be appreciated.

General Discussion / Re: BTER Withdrawals
« on: December 14, 2014, 02:37:49 pm »
FWIW, I am having a similar problem with Peloniex, so apparently the problem isn't just BTER. The transaction id that Peloniex has in my withdrawal history is not found in the blockchain.

26
Thanks. I finally got a confirmation, so it sounds like I'll be ok.

27
I withdrew 69 PTS from Peloniex on 12/11 and my wallet still says 69 unconfirmed shares on 12/13. If these shares are not confirmed by 12/14, then I assume they will miss the snapshot and there is nothing I can do about it, right? What time on 12/14 is the snapshot effective?

Technical Support / Re: Not Connected 4.12
« on: September 28, 2014, 04:24:59 pm »
the settings seem ok to me .. you have any personal firewall enabled? windows firewall? could you try with disabled firewall?

I had McAfee Firewall installed. I disabled it and it it didn't seem to make any difference. I either got 0 or 1 connections and no updates seemed to be taking place.

I usually shut my computer down at night, but last night I left it on all night with bitshares-x and nothing else running. When I got up this morning it said it had 5 connections and was updating albeit very slowly - there was a message that said last update occurred 61 days ago. I tried to use File/Quit to exit the software and the software stopped responding even after several minutes so I used Ctrl-Alt-Delete to stop it. I restarted the software and it has been running for several hours - it always has either 0 or 1 connection and does not appear to be updating at all.

How many connections should you expect to get? Does this basically depend on your connection speed?

I still basically cannot connect. I have been re-installing and then re-trying every time a new release of the bitshares-x software is released. I am now using the 64-bit version of 4.17, but I have also tried the 32-bit version for Windows.

Here is what get_info says:

I get the same result if I install the software on a different computer.

Once, after waiting 20 minutes I was able to get:  "network_num_connections": 1,
but a few minutes later it went back to:  "network_num_connections": 0,

I live in a rural area and I have a satellite internet connection which is slow by urban standards.  I am able to run most other things including a full node on the bitcoin network when I want to, so it seems like my connection would be fast enough, but I can't think of anything else. Would a somewhat slow internet connection cause this problem?

Code: [Select]
client_data_dir": "C:/Users/Greg/AppData/Roaming/BITSHA~2
Any particular reason you have 2 data directories?

Hmmm. I didn't know that's what that meant. Could it be looking at both my bitsharesX and my bitshares-PTS folders?

No, those are 2 BTSX folders (potentially one is BTS TX - if you have participated in any od the test (dry) runs, but it is not PTS folder, imho)

I don't know why it says I have two BTSX folders. If I look in my appdata\roaming folder there is only one bitshares-x folder. I reinstalled the software several times and on some of those installs I used a new password which I guess creates a new wallet, but even if I import my original wallet or do a complete re-install after deleting my appdata\roaming\bitsharesx folder, the next time I run get_info, it still says BITSHA~2.

If I reinstall on another computer and do a get_info it does not have BITSHA~2.
