BitShares PTS / [ANN] BitShares-PTS Dry Run #2 launched
« on: December 10, 2014, 07:56:59 pm »
Today dry run #2 of the new PTS client software has started.

We invite all interested parties to participate in the final test of the new network.

* Source code is available at https://github.com/PTS-DPOS/PTS .
* Genesis block uses PTS snapshot from 2014-12-09, scaled to 1 billion PTS.
* Everything else is final, unless we identify showstoppers during this run.

Among other things, we want to specifically test our new feature:

Secure genesis claims

It is now possible to claim genesis balances without importing private keys by means of the new "wallet_import_by_signedmsg" command. A description of the idea can be found here: http://pts.cubeconnex.com/index.php?topic=37.0 and a step-by-step explanation in our wiki: http://pts.cubeconnex.com/wiki/index.php?title=Secure_Asset_Import .

Build and run

Code: [Select]
git clone https://github.com/PTS-DPOS/PTS.git
cd PTS
git checkout dry-run-2
git submodule init
git submodule update
cmake .
make pts_client
programs/client/pts_client

Windows download: https://github.com/PTS-DPOS/PTS/releases

Next steps

* Dry run 2 will last until Saturday Dec 13.
* The last block published to the old PTS network before the end of Sunday Dec 14 (GMT) will be used for creating the genesis block of the new chain.
* The new PTS-DPOS chain will be launched in the early hours of Monday Dec 15.

WARNING! It is advisable to withdraw your balances from the exchanges unless you have positive confirmation that they will support the new client!

Edit: Apparently, bter will honour the snapshot: https://bter.com/trade/pts_btc .

I think a female face like hers would attract a lot of attention from the crypto community (99% male).

Face?

Are you aware of programs/utils/bts_create_key in the bitshares repo?

no I wasn't. I can just put that (alone) on a flashdrive and run it offline in a live-cd?
The issue with that one is that ideally .. you need to compile it on a offline ci
omputer running a livelinux of some kind ..
while python is almost stand-alone

Javascript would ve alot nicer though

Depends on your level of paranoia, I suppose. Don't forget to compile python on your livelinux before using your version. And the compiler used for compiling python of course. And the kernel. And...  ;)

Yes, it should be possible to put that alone on a flashdrive and run it offline.

Suppose (for simplicity) there is an ask offer on the market 10 bitUSD @ 0.5 BTS/bitUSD and a bid for 5 bitUSD @ 1 BTS/bitUSD.
The market can choose:
1. take the 10 bitUSD from the ask, use 5 bitUSD to fill the bid, take the 5*1 BTS from the bid and pay the ask 10*0.5 BTS, keep the remaining 5 bitUSD for yield.
2. take 5 bitUSD from the ask, use these to fill the bid, take 5*1 BTS from the bid, pay the ask 5*0.5 BTS and destroy the remaining 2.5 BTS as dividends.
3. Anything in between.

Technical Support / Re: Stupid questions about running a delegate
« on: December 05, 2014, 09:11:11 am »
Am I okay to just carry on, and register both meblockstar and delegate.meblockstar on the blockchain once I get delegate.meblockstar funded?

Yes.

should I have even made delegate.meblockstar? Should I have just used meblockstar since I'm only using this wallet to sign blocks? I guess I'm just in general confused about the whole naming conventions.

It is "only" a convention, but a strong one. ISTR that bm once said he won't vote for non-subaccount delegates.

Question 2:

Since I have screen running, that means I can just shut down the computer (or exit the terminal), and still be producing blocks, right? To bring the wallet back up, i just log into my ssh and run screen -dr?

Yes, basically.
You should properly detach the screen session (CTRL-A CTRL-D I believe). Assuming that you delegate is on a remote computer, you can then shut down the local machine and the delegate will keep running. And yes, you can later ssh into remote and reattach the screen session.

Question 3:

gbd doesn't do anything more than just give more detailed information from the command line than just the client would, right?

Don't know gbd, but if you mean gdb (Gnu DeBugger) - gdb is only useful for analyzing crashes or other malfunctions by watching the program execute the source code. If you don't know what that means don't bother, you won't need it.

God knows I have about 750 pointless posts...but this one rivals them gooooooooood.

I was answering TanFan's question... how is that pointless?

1330
IIRC it's possible and you even get a discount.

Anyway, it's legal if it works. :-) This is a DAC, all of the legalese is coded into the client.

That windows wallet is from the previous test network. This is *not* dry run #1. Cube is working on the GUI and will provide a new windows wallet when he's finished.

1332
There are currently ~1,763,472 PTS in existence. To scale these up to 1 billion we multiply each balance in the snapshot with a factor of ~567. IOW your 100 old PTS will become about 56,700 new PTS.

What won't change is your relative possession of the total existing PTS. I. e. if you own 1% of the total existing PTS before the upgrade you'll also own 1% of the total after the upgrade.

We are pleased to announce that we have just started dry run #1 of the new PTS client software.

We invite all interested parties to participate in testing the new network.

* Currently only the CLI client is available, GUI will follow soon.
* Specs are as announced previously ( http://pts.cubeconnex.com/index.php?topic=43.0 ), but not necessarily final.
* Source code is available at https://github.com/PTS-DPOS/PTS .
* Genesis block uses PTS snapshot from 2014-12-02, scaled to 1 billion PTS.

Among other things, we want to specifically test our new feature:

Secure genesis claims

It is now possible to claim genesis balances without importing private keys by means of the new "wallet_import_by_signedmsg" command. A description of the idea can be found here: http://pts.cubeconnex.com/index.php?topic=37.0

We are looking for initial delegates!

In order to achieve good decentralization right from the start we hope to find volunteers for running initial delegates from dry run #2 on. Details are described here: http://pts.cubeconnex.com/index.php?topic=48.0 . Please help us make the new network secure and reliable!

Build and run

git clone git@github.com:PTS-DPOS/PTS.git
git checkout dry-run-1a
git submodule init
git submodule update
cmake .
make pts_client
programs/client/pts_client

Trying to understand your last sentence:
BTC block 1: 100 BTC defined, but unspendable, meaning they can't be transferred|sold|exchanged right? If not what does unspendable mean?

Actually it was only 50 BTC and the first block was block #0. https://blockchain.info/block/000000000019d6689c085ae165831e934ff763ae46a2a6c172b3f1b60a8ce26f
Unspendable means that the 50 BTC created in the first block can't be spent. There is no fundamental reason for this, it's due to a minor flaw in the client (or in the protocol?) I believe.

BTC block 2: still 100 BTC? What, didn't you mean to say there were more? What exactly happened to create block 2? None of the original BTC were transfered, and apparently no mining took place or there would be more than 100 BTC. This does not show a progression at all. I'm more confused.

The second block was block #1. It was mined in the normal way and had the standard block reward of 50 BTC. https://blockchain.info/block/00000000839a8e6886ab5951d76f411475428afc90947ee320161bbf18eb6048

So did bitcoin have a literal genesis block of 100 BTC  as you stated above, and was it different in fundamental ways (i.e. not by magnitude) from the PTS genesis block? I have asked about PTS genesis block before, and was told it defined stakeholders and their stake right from the get go, and that if someone bought PTS from an exchange it was b/c one of the PTS stakeholders from the genesis block sold (i.e. transferred) some portion of their holdings to the exchange. Sounds like I was misinformed.

You were misinformed there. PTS is a classic PoW coin with no premining. https://coinplorer.com/PTS/Blocks/000fdcd47b7e75a46a2aded5f3335c90eb2224e01ab19ec64ffdd1b437d7b8c0?title=000fdcd47b7e75a46a2aded5f3335c90eb2224e01ab19ec64ffdd1b437d7b8c0
Every PTS that exists today was created by miners in accordance with the protocol.
