Title: Bitshares analogy.....under construction
Post by: Ben Mason on May 12, 2015, 04:12:21 pm
Not sure if it will be of any use but i've been trying to think of ways to describe Bitshares that might help a crypto layman to understand.  My musings led me to cellular biology and this is what I have so far;

Bitshares could be described as a multi-nucleated (digital) cell.....

Delegates are cell nuclei - source of blockchain evolution & replication in addition to acting as a repository for the blockchain
Blockchain is DNA - encoding rules governing the cellular network & acting as a repository of evolving information
Software is cytoplasm - provides the medium and structure in which processes occur & information flows
Internet is vascular/nervous system - enables (packets of digital information) resources to flow across, in & out of the network
Workers are mitochondria - power change within the network whilst ensuring a competitive & efficient use of network resources
Witnesses represented by RNA - manage configuration & maintenance of the network
Market mechanisms form a digital membrane - manages & monitor the flow of resources throughout the network
Unit/tokens represent cellular resources - special configurations of digital information that enables resource within the network to be managed effectively
Users represent the supply of extra-cellular or consumption of resources - input or remove of resources & providing impetus for the flow

If this analogy proves useful, we could refine it and produce a graphic representation.  I thought it was quite a nice possibility to market BitShares like some kind of cybernetic, autonomous, semi-biological, intelligent network....

Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts.

DNA and cell functions aren't exactly 'layman' but it does seem to fit quite well.
I really like this although I think it needs graphics to really make sense of how all the components fit together. That way you don't need to know the scientific terms to understand that information etc flows around A --> B ---> C

Cool! Glad you think it could be useful. I'll see if i can't get some help producing an appropriate graphic to help fill it out....

I think cass is doing infographics so my guess is you should contact them. This should give a very good one!

Great part of new technology is based on animal structure, I guess blockchain is no different.

Another analogy I've heard is a comparison of the Bitshares exchange to BetFair - which is an order matching system for a P2P bookmaker.

BitShares is just the same except the bets can be placed on any asset as well as betting with prediction markets (in the future).
I think an analogy like this is more targeted towards our most likely potential customers.
'Bitshares is like betfair except you can bet on the price of gold and silver!'

Excerpt from their FAQ: Betfair is the world’s largest international online sports betting provider and pioneered the first successful Betting Exchange in 2000. The Betting Exchange, where customers come together in order to bet at odds sought by themselves or offered by other customers, has eliminated the need for a traditional bookmaker. Driven by world-leading technology the company now processes over five million transactions a day from its three million registered customers around the world. In addition to sports betting, Betfair offers a portfolio of innovative products including Casino, Exchange Games, Arcade and Poker.

That is very interesting. it will be interesting to see where Bitshares ends and play begins
