General Discussion / Re: Does this describe your BitShares process?
« on: November 09, 2014, 06:31:51 pm »
No, my process was:

Learn about bitshares in september.

Buy more every time the price hits a new low.

Try to explain to people who apparently cannot understand anything how the merger to BTS works.  Watch them keep dumping BTSX even though its better than ever.

And to contribute to the community more since September than I have managed the whole year.

Your logic doesn't make sense. You thought it wouldn't have any value after the snapshot so you held in your wallet and forgot about it. So where exactly are you losing anything? Is it because you could've earned a bit by selling after the snapshot which you didn't? Thats not a loss, more like some gains you've missed.

This was not like a snapshot for a new DAC where people were getting in and out of PTS because they knew price would spike before the snapshot and drop after it. This was a snapshot where all shares(PTS, AGS, BTSX, DNS etc.) would be combined into BTS. So how or why would any logic dictate that after this snapshot that any or all of them would still exist and be traded? They should all be worthless as they don't exist anymore. Only BTS does. BTW a gain I missed is exactly equal to a loss. Its called a lost opportunity and that opportunity was lost because only the few people truly in the know, knew exactly what was happening. I most certainly would have dumped every PTS and BTSX I had if i had even an inkling of a clue that I was supposed to. I sure as hell bet you did.

BTSX is one thing you shouldn't dump. There was no snapshot for BTSX, they will become BTS after a software upgrade later this month.

@bitcoinnoisseur

Don't worry, I understand your concerns and frustrations, but I don't think you've missed out. All's well that ends well, and I think if you hang on with BitShares you may see a very nice ending!

If you still have PTS there is the possibility of gaining from 3rd party airdrops in the future, as you may be considered part of a valuable demographic. I still have some. I might have sold after the snapshot while the prices were still high, but I was too busy to follow it closely. The prices shouldn't really have stayed so high - it's been suggested that some people forgot to turn off their bots!

General Discussion / Does this describe your BitShares process?
« on: November 09, 2014, 05:37:24 pm »
  • Hmmm...this BitShares thing looks promising. Protoshares? I'm gonna get some.
  • Oooh, what's this? Angelshares? I'm in! How much should I donate? I fundamentally love the ideas behind BitShares and trust the people. I'd like to go all in, but I've got a family to support. I'm going to put a significant chunk into it, but not too much - I must be responsible!
  • Oh shit, oh shit!!! The snapshot for BitsharesX has been announced and I've not given enough to Angelshares. Oh bugger, the daily donation amount has gone right up! Gonna put more in, but can't go crazy - I've got the children's future to think about!
  • Oh, the daily donations to Angelshares have dropped right off after the BTSX snapshot. I want some cheap AGS - there are all those other DACs which haven't had snapshots yet. Gonna send a few more BTC/PTS. Not too many though, I've got bills to pay! Gotta be responsible!
  • I want to diversify, there's loads of crypto stuff about. I'm going to buy some Bitcoin so I can get some other crypto stuff...I wanna get some NXT...but I love BitShares...oh crap, I sent all the Bitcoin to the AGS address!
  • People are whingeing and complaining all over the forum. They don't trust 3I because nothing's been released...I'm not worried, I believe in BitShares more than anything else around! More AGS please!
  • The Angelshares window is closing! Last chance! Oh sugar, the price is going up again! Hmmmm....no, I've given loads already. I mustn't take risks unnecessarily. I must save money for the family's future.
  • OH FUCK!!! The AGS window is now closed, and it's never coming back!!! I wish I'd gone all in, but I had to be responsible.

Throughout the process, and with everything that's happened since, my feelings remain solid:
"With BitShares, it's about the attitude and the ideas. The ups and downs and market caps are not so important. We're going places and changing the world."

P.S. I never managed to buy any significant amounts of NXT, even though I like what they do. It all keeps coming to BitShares! Can anyone here motivate me to get some NXT please? :D

Since we are fast approaching Remembrance Day, suffice it to say that he reminds me of the (un)thinking lemmings in the 1st World War who charged into machine gun fire ostensibly for their kin and country but in fact, because they were too lazy and uncritical, for  the profit of another Banker's War. Am I going to celebrate those brain-dead idiots by glorifying their "exploits"? Yeah, right. Go peddle your poppies to today's zombies.

My intention isn't to state whether or not I agree with you.
I think, however, it's worth bearing in mind that it was a lot harder to educate oneself in the early 20th century. Decent information was much harder to obtain, predominantly due to the lack of internet. Do you think you are viewing this from a strong point of retrospect?

"Decent information" and the advances in computer technology and information systems are irrelevant to the hard work of going inside and examining how your beliefs were formed and coming to an understanding of how your perceptions are skewed, and reinforced, by those beliefs.

I understand, and agree in large part. However, "decent information" is'nt completely irrelevant. The way I see it, when a broad base of information is easier to come by, it is harder for the powers that be to affect people's opinions.

It is easy to get frustrated by the fact that many people don't bother to think hard about the world around them, and about the way their own thoughts and actions arise. It leads to problems when people are easily manipulated.

The internet allows the wide availability of information, and also the ability to share thoughts and ideas quite freely. I say that this makes it harder for the powerful to brainwash the masses. If only more people would stop playing Farmville on Facebook, and start to delve a bit deeper!

I'm getting that on two different computers. I am not tech savvy enough to know what is causing it, but I am savvy enough to close it without inputting any information.

I've seen this too. I'm ignorant when it comes to tech. I closed the window using the red cross in the top right (also without inputting). Is there any risk when this is done?
Does anyone know?

Hmm...so prediction markets are awesome...truthcoin is a great idea...toast "wants it to exist"...and a leading dev is apparently willing to jump ship. Why aren't we in on this then? What's stopping us? I still feel like there's this big history between BitShares and Truthcoin that I'm missing...

Perhaps you've not seen this old board...https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?board=60.0

I wouldnt wonder if the sum of stakes of all participants in the poll is larger than 2B .. ;)

I vote with my 1,999,893,543.73476 shares this to be the case!

Well I have 106,456.26525 so there is a discrepancy somewhere...

Truthcoin is underrated. I tried to jumpstart an independent effort with only basic support and it fizzled. We have a c++ implementation of the critical features but no resources to build it.

I want it to exist...

I just found this post, on the Truthcoin forum, http://forum.truthcoin.info/index.php/topic,6.msg743.html#msg743

The person seems to be available if paid enough, and seems to like POS. They say:

"Dyffy is paying me $1000 a month (minus tax) to build their version of truthcoin.
I am not loyal. If anyone would pay me more, I would work on their ideas instead.

The python version of truthcoin I built is working pretty well. It does all the prediction market stuff truthcoin is supposed to do. We have tested it with 5 nodes at a time. We have run it continuously for 4 days without it crashing.
My head-start on creating this software is very big. It will be multiple months before we see any other implementation start to catch up to where I am.

My guess for the most valuable truthcoin 2 years from now: Majority of coins will be owned by a rich person who can afford legal fees and advertising fees (and possibly mining fees). They will hire me to maintain it. Maybe it will be Dyffy, but I doubt it.

If truthcoin is launched as a proof-of-work blockchain, I expect there to be a period of time about as long as a year when we will need to pay $100-$1000 daily into mining costs. I cannot afford this. Until a rich person shows up willing to pay, I am focusing my attention on proof of stake, which will costs pennies a day to keep operational."

@nomoreheroes7 - I wonder if you'd enjoy listening to this episode of 'Let's Talk Bitcoin' http://letstalkbitcoin.com/blog/post/lets-talk-bitcoin-episode-117-the-truth-matrix
It's an interview with Paul Sztorc, of Truthcoin. For me it was an outstanding episode, which lead me to a conclusion which agrees with Toast's statement of, "I want it to exist".

It makes since to pay attention to him since hes a decision maker

...? The way some of you guys are referring to this guy makes him sound like some legendary mastermind. I truly feel like I'm missing something here...

And I have yet to see anything that TruthCoin offers that supposedly makes it so much more awesome than BTS. Just prediction markets? (Which I admittedly don't fully understand). If they're that amazing surely BTS would implement them sooner or later?

This feels like a TruthCoin pump thread or something, lol.

"Money actually isn't the bottleneck, dev talent is. (This thread was started by one of the rare breed of 'good blockchain developers', "toast" from the Bitshares dev team).
Whatever it takes to get 1-2 extremely high quality developers.
(So the answer depends on finding developers and asking them "What do you want?")"

Increase Profits

At just $0.02 per transaction you can increase your profit margins by several percent by eliminating credit card fees.

Am I right in thinking it is the customer who would pay the transaction fee when making a purchase?

What I mean is, aren't they 'push' transactions, whereby the customer pays the transaction fee?
Therefore when pitching to merchants can't we say that there is no transaction fee for them to pay when they sell?

The only other thing I can think of here is to mention the coolness factor.  Just like 'bitcoin accepted here' can lead to merchants getting new business from bitcoiners, so can 'bitUSD accepted here'.

Yes. BitUSD would bring in new customers and gain the merchant coverage in the media. This effect is most prominent when you are among the first merchants to adopt (not so effective now with Bitcoin). This is a very good selling point if there are merchants who hesitate when they don't see others doing it! There must be solid examples of this happening with Bitcoin, which could be used to convince merchants. I believe these sort of new customers were shown to spend more too!

With BitUSD customers don't need to do any mental arithmetic to convert from BitUSD to USD - benefit over Bitcoin.

With BitUSD, as a result of the increased profits from lowered fees, the merchant can offer a discount to customers. This discount is OBVIOUS with the BitUSD price against the USD price - benefit!

Reduce Liability

Eliminate the need to collect sensitive financial information form your customers.
