Title: Fix for corrupted wallet.dat and client crash issues and No Block source
Post by: barwizi on January 03, 2014, 05:15:51 pm
For those with corrupt wallet.dat

1) create a folder named protoalt and keep it's path in mind
2)Copy all the files except your wallet.dat into the new folder
3) Create a .bat to start the alternate you have created
3)start your client with -salvagewallet, this does exactly that.
4) once your wallet is recovered, start the alternate client, it will create a new wallet for you.
5) send coins to new wallet and use it as main one now.

Note: it's advisable to keep a copy of all your wallet.dat files in secure seperate storage in case of data corruption.

For those with Client start issues

Try starting your client with -reindex in console. this will reindex the blocks on your hdd and then connect to the network to sync.

Mac os /Applications/ProtoShares-Qt-0.2.0.app/Contents/MacOS/ProtoShares-Qt -reindex
Windows -- /yourpath/protoshares-qt.exe -reindex

No Block source

Make sure you have the updated wallet which has hard coded seed nodes

if it is still not connected go to the debug window and
Code: [Select]
addnode 162.243.197.231 add and
Code: [Select]
addnode cryptoseed.cloudapp.net:80 add
Code: [Select]
addnode q39.protoshar.es add

If addnode doesn't solve your "no block source"problem (sometimes firewall setting results in it), you can use the new version wallet(window version), suggested by Bytemaster in https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=355.60

It has nodes embedded, and proved functional by many people (no exception yet).

if you have the latest version and have tried all the addnodes. It stands to reason that it is a firewall. Please do a clean install, temporarily turn off your firewall (5 minutes should do) and tell me if there is a change.

addnode 162.243.197.231 add

is not the most efficient way to go about it

you would use

addnode 162.243.197.231 onetry

if it doesn't work, then it isnt likely to work any time soon

Here is my way to resolve "Error reloading block database. Do you want to rebuild the block database now?" when starting mac client(it will always failed when you click yes and quit when no). Hope its useful for someone in the same situation.

Before you take any action to fix the problem, BACKUP YOUR WALLET!

1. start the client with command line" ProtoShares-Qt -reindex".

2. after reindexing, "no block source" for 1 hour, so i found some node from this thread(https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=355.0).

its useful:help->debug->console and input commands:
addnode 61.238.157.8 add
addnode 54.254.192.95 add
addnode 54.207.21.146 add
addnode 54.206.30.227 add
addnode 54.219.164.14 add
addnode 146.185.172.136 add
addnode 162.243.14.13 add
addnode 5.9.24.81 add
addnode 23.92.25.118 add

So I created a shortcut for the wallet and added "-connect=crptoseed.cloudapp.net:80" and this worked fine and I received a few shares. But now it is saying "no block source available" and I don't think I changed anything. What gives? I could really use some help here.

The new fix for the crashing wallet for those who have the Bitshares-PTS wallet on Mac OS is now:

/Applications/BitShares-PTS.app/Contents/MacOS/BitShares-PTS -reindex

Are you using the most recent client?
You will need to export your wallet from the old one and import it into the new one.

Most recent client you can find here:
https://github.com/BitShares/BitShares-PTS/releases

Yes, make a backup of wallet.dat before everything.

replace the wallet file in the new data directory. It's in BitShares-PTS folder in your app support directory (depends on OS)

Toast let me understand do I copy and paste this into the folder that I unzipped and then I download the file?

I have no idea, I myself still use the old client. I know that's a foolproof way to do it, another is to manually dumpprivkey / importprivkey. There might be a better way to import with the new client but IDK.

Check here: http://ptsexplorer.cloudapp.net/chain/BitShares-PTS
If address to which you send gets PTS.
If your address get PTS from cryptsy and you have a copy of wallet.dat with this address we can work and you get your PTS back.

I think there might be some misunderstanding. It seems you were using an old version of the PTS/Protoshares client. You then downloaded and installed the most recent version from: https://github.com/BitShares/BitShares-PTS/releases.

After doing this, there is another step. You need to copy the 'wallet.dat' file from a particular application folder corresponding to the older client to the appropriate application folder corresponding with the most recent version of the client. This is what toast means by "exporting" and "importing".

These folder locations depend on your operating system--Mac or Windows. Which are you using?

Here is what the appropriate folders should look similar to for Windows: http://www.reddit.com/r/protoshare/comments/1youib/caution_watch_for_falling_pts/cfmtvgh

Just a Note....
For some reason...  even though many users have apparently NOT Changed anything in confg - the entire "No Block source available" issue seems to have been going on for Multiple platforms, and Multiple types of wallets... including Master coin, Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin and others.  This has been happening since at least Sep. 2013.  Even though the 'addnodes' and other fixes like changing the ports
i.e. to 9150 instead of 9050 etc etc.   SEEM to sometimes work.  (... I personally NOW think it's coincidence that these FIXES seem to work.  Since I tried one of these fixes at the same time someone else did on the east coast... theirs WORKED mine did not.)
also... I've had the same problems on Win 7 as well as PinguyOS and from Bitcoin and Masterchest and others.
Some cross platform even seem to stop at the exact same blocks.  The other day numerous people in Masterchest had the "no Block Source available across the USA at least and were all behind by 27 hours....
I don't know what it is but I am still baffled.  Mine suddenly started working again with NO help!  and NO reinstall.
Stuck at "behind by 27 hours" and then suddenly .... all caught up! (one stuck was after completely rebuilding a 23 gig+ data base for RPCaccess... worked right up to 27 hours behind then STOPPED.

Please post your machine / os specs.  We need more info because things are stable on all of our machines.

Qt WebKit seems to load Internet plugins that can cause crashes on Mac.  It may be something on your computer conflicting.
