Random Discussion / Re: Maidsafe under 7500 sats
« on: May 29, 2015, 02:22:16 pm »
It looks like MaidSafe may have some really cool tech, but I haven't seen anything likely to make their tokens increase in value.  Mostly they seem to be building "common good" infrastructure with no idea how to align the incentives properly.  It would be cool if they partnered with us: we have the model to maintain that infrastructure development, but they seem to be ahead on DHT routing and related network services, as well as data hosting.

I disagree:
https://forum.safenetwork.io/t/what-gives-safecoin-value-and-differentiates-it-from-altcoins/411/18

My crypto portfolio now is pretty much all Bitshares, Maidsafe and Bitcoin.

I'm not saying SafeCoin will be worthless, just that I don't see why the value would increase significantly.  SafeCoin is backed by storage and network resources, and MaidSafe is designed to make access to those resources as cheap as possible by greatly reducing market friction.

There are at least three options with MaidSafe:
1. Buy hard drives and network resources to earn SafeCoin.
2. Buy SafeCoin and wait for it to appreciate.
3. Invest elsewhere and wait for MaidSafe to save you money by making storage cheaper.

Option 1 seems like a bad idea, because until saturation, you'll be undercut by people with currently wasted resources, and after saturation you'll be undercut by larger farms due to economies of scale.

Option 2 will only be profitable if the value of the resources commanded by SafeCoin increases faster than the supply of SafeCoin, which seems contrary to the MaidSafe design.  Or if speculative value dominates backing based value in SafeCoin.

That leaves me really excited about MaidSafe, but entirely unmotivated to buy any SafeCoin.  I'd like to want to buy SafeCoin, so please explain if I'm in error.

You raise some fair points however my understanding that is on day one, 30% will have already been allocated which leads to a much higher level of speculative value:

Cap: 4.3 billion
5% investors
10% Crowdsale
5% Held by the Maidsafe foundation to allocate to core developers.
10% Allocated by the network to developers who create applications that people use.

The other 70% will be rewarded slowly by the network.

You mention in point 3 about storage being made cheaper - I think if Maidsafe is successful it will be so much more than a decentralised dropbox. You will see massive applications - initially it will be the illicit ones that cause the network effect to really take off (There will be streaming/sharing sites that remove the need for torrenting and silk road'esque sites will be reborn). Eventually there will be all kinds of sites replacing the normal web but ensuring privacy.

The current valuation of this "new internet" network is ~$70million (based on marketcap of all coins that will eventually be minted). That's a spec in the ocean compared to the current internet. I know this is not an easy comparison because the current internet isn't monotised in the same way but to me it's a signal that things could get much much bigger.

There is no BTC/bitCNY pair, for example.

There is, there's just not enough people using it. Shapeshift could help to become a liquidity provider through becoming a market maker on the pair. I agree that programatically this may involve selling on the BTS market but eventually more people will use it on its own. BitUSD:BTC etc are going to be amazing when they have more liquidity but to start with it needs to be easy to enter and exit the BTS pairs.

They're getting less of a pump than we've had in the last 7 days.
Most cryptos are down heavily since their peak, the tides might be finally turning or it's just a bull trap before we slide further.

It looks like some big investors have invested heavily into several of the more popular altcoins - this makes sense based on the huge divergence in price from Bitcoins price. The advantages offered by some altcoins like BTS make them worthy of a greater cut of the total crypto marketcap pie.

perfect timing was sheer luck. I have almost done x 2 to 3 investment but am not cashing out. After messing with client I think this could be a btc competitor. So im holding the price briefly dipped below true market share but Im now seeing as an equivalent of investing in apple in early days. Not a fan boy or anything else just a random investor that sees the real potential. So for now im holding like a beast these guys are gonna combine an exchange + the on and off ramp in one package and they are definitely the first to bring the total package. BTS will be the future cause its an all in one package.

BTW no im not a fan boy. Not paid, really a random noob investor on crypto at the right time. Thus far best random trade Ive ever made lol..

Welcome :)
I felt exactly the same when I properly starting playing with Bitshares. It's a serious game changer.

General Discussion / Re: BitAssets 2.0 (formally 3.0)
« on: May 03, 2015, 09:12:49 am »
BitAssets 2.0 (or 3.0/whatever) is an interesting proposition but I do have a couple of concerns.

The model seems to rely heavily on there being BitAsset to real asset gateways which we don't have yet. Even if we did have one, the initial monopoly would cause the spreads to lead to BTS:BitUSD still being a cheaper option that converting to real USD.

I like the idea of real dollars being cheaper than BitUSD when converting from BTS as it takes into account the fact that BitUSD is far more convenient thus must come at a premium.

I'm quite averse to this model being directly implemented as a hard fork and would first like to see how it fares with DevShares. How else can this be tested? Perhaps a staggered release of the new algorithm on an asset to asset basis?

My biggest concern is how we are going to fund developers when the donations dry up. Delegate pay is nowhere near enough now and only getting less and less. There is clearly very little disposable income left in the space else moonstone would have been funded by now.

Shouldn't we be reaching out to VC's? Why aren't VC's buying Bitshares with it's potential to be so lucrative?

It's honestly getting to the stage where I don't know if I'm just crazy or the rest of the world is blind...

Probably both

Wow we are now lower than NXT, this makes no sense! Either someone knows something we don't or some people are very crazy

Head over to bitshares.org and download the client, you'll be able to import your old PTS wallet.

Great improvements, feels smoother again and I like the new UI (except for the market order depth graphic looks AWFUL and squished)

With atomic cross chain trading I guess it's feasible

Must've been doing something in the background without anything on interface.

Few questions:

1) What OS are you on?
OSX Yosemite
2) What are the stats of the wallet machine?
2.4ghz core i5, 8gb ddr3 memory
3) When you say, "Uninstalled everything" do you also mean your data directory (location based on OS).
NA I just installed it like I have all other versions
4) How many accounts do you have in your wallet (rough number will do 1 or 2, 10 - 20, 50+)
5-10

Just downloaded 0.9.0 and i still cant get access to my wallet. When i put the password it just keeps looking like its about to unlock.

This is getting frustrating now. I have uninstalled everything and re installed.

Please advise, with simple instructions please.
