https://bitshares.org/ has been replaced with the new BitShares 2.0 website hosted using GitHub pages at this repository: https://github.com/bitshares/bitshares.github.io
The old website will be kept temporarily online here: http://v1.bitshares.org/
All constructive feedback on the new site is appreciated.
Special thanks to cass, xeroc, robrigo, CryptoPrometheus, Chronos, and bytemaster for working so hard to build the new website.

What's the reason you guys chose to move the website to github hosting?

General simplicity of development, maintenance, and operations; and also anyone in the community can relatively easily contribute changes by submitting a pull request on GitHub.
-
Will an asset price ticker or some kind of price information be on the home page to help reinforce that this is an actual exchange?
-

We hadn't planned on it, as the site is focusing on BitShares as a smart contract platform with many features, not just the exchange feature.
-
Yes, I really like it. The right amount of (technical/crypto) detail to attract an 'early adopter'.
-
Design looks good, though I wonder the font appears a bit small; and the blog could do with a bit of spice colour or images.
Who is the customer and what will this do for them? That question could be more obvious.
Big Money audience: "industrial-grade financial smart contract platform" is a great hook.
Top line of links/puffs though I would have thought should be "Decentralized Asset Exchange"; "High Performance and Scalability"; "Collateralized Bond Market". I don't know but whatever will ensure that the key audience is hooked.. they may not scroll down that webpage that looks like every other webpage unless there are enough hooks on first glance.
Individuals:
Does the detail appear too technical for noobs with some cash to invest? How is BitShares obviously appealing to mom+pop who are aware of Bitcoin+ but unsure and unaware of why they might want an "industrial-grade financial smart contract platform".
The "Who" is behind it could be made more obvious.. evidence the strength of the dev team.. skill set if not now named individuals.
Perhaps consider making something of what is now BitShares heritage .. 2.0 is built on the back of experience that others do not have.
Also, I wonder if there are opportunities to make statements from partners and players in FinTech - ones that lend credibility.. "BitShares 2.0 made me say 'Wow' - Janet Yellen." etc.
Perhaps more important than our opinion, is getting the reaction of those new investors you want to engage.. test the water with a few big players who might be intrigued - Barclay's blockchain accelerator and others who are up to speed - and see if that website answers all their questions and perhaps get quotes on the back of their feedback.
I'd replace "Email me when it's ready" to subscribe for alerts and progress updates.. and then keep those interested engaged over time.
and later perhaps integrate the wallet or a demo video. Different people like different methods of communication. The walls of text perhaps need "quotations" in bold that shout out the tldr; .. but there is a lot of content which is great for those with the time to read it.

A section on the homepage that describes 2 or 3 use cases that customers should be interested in.
If you're a business and would like cheaper online banking services you'll like bitUSD and our recurring payments feature.
If you're a savvy saver and you'd like to keep your wealth safely in your own hands, you'll like cold storage savings accounts that pay out a weekly budget securely.
If you're a crypto exchange and don't want the hassle of getting licensed to run a fiat orderbook integrate with BitShares and use bitUSD instead. You might also want to issue a UIA to collect fees from BitShares users and target new customers with business models not before possible.
On first landing on the page, the headline "BitShares 2.0 is an industrial-grade financial smart contract platform." with no other context leads me to believe that Bitshares is some kind of corporate banking software to run their back-end servers or something. Why should I care?
A descriptive picture is needed that can contextualize everything and tell the customer how they should be imagining themselves using the product.

Thanks for you feedback!
Good ideas, we will discuss them later on!
-

Smart contracts are not even on the website, are they?
-
I am very happy at technical level, it is simple to understand every feature and its reasoning. It can now demonstrate and sell all the achievements of BitShares.
I do agree it needs use cases to demonstrate different ways to benefit. Maybe a fictitious business (es) or user and their setup.
-
how do you intend to attract savers? Like people looking for a secure interest bearing investment? If there's a way you should highlight this
-
Github link now redirects to the old bitshares.org page? I really love the new design and information structuring, bring it back!
-
Perhaps do a press release, if that's not been done already.. and then a run of articles can be linked to help context; get the journalists to do the work of bridging to potential new users.
-
The website looks very good.
I think this is good as a base and then have individual websites for specific target markets most probably run by others.
In terms of a few quotes, Erik Vorhees might be able to give a quote about BitShares as it relates to ShapeShift and he's very well known. For the Chinese market potentially Ron Cao of Lightspeed China Partners that invested in DACx. Obviously anyone more mainstream would be great too.
I would link to a page that tries to visually put the entire expanding BitShares universe together which will also promote the individual companies and help customers who might find their way to BitShares.org find the BitShares Business that best meets their needs. (Listing exchanges, DACx, Beyond Bitcoin, CryptoSmith, Moonstone, perhaps bunker mining etc.)
Perhaps something like the NXT technology tree but for BitShares supporting businesses. http://www.nxttechnologytree.com/
The growing BitShares network is incredibly impressive and to see it all together would really make people realise how awesome it is.
-
Quotes and partner logos are important to get instant respect :)
-
Love the new site. Clean, well organised, great feature logos, gorgeous banner.
I'd like to add agreement to what others have suggested, a partners page, a workers page (who they are & status of project work, funds spent etc.)
Also, Bitshares, powered by Graphene has to be somewhere! :)
I'd like a really simple page for beginners....'what bitshares can do for you, right now' 'join the blockchain revolution, discover a new world' etc.......
Could the beautiful banner be used vertically in the features pages on the left to add a bit of colour?
Can you add a link to bitsharesblocks?
Can we add a page for market prices with graphs....
I'm absolutely certain you have big plans for building the site out. Despite the hard work to produce the old site and it was very nice.....this new site is fantastic. Really great work guys. +5%
Oh, how about this somewhere if the community likes....
Innovation & Integrity, preserved by Bitshares, powered by Graphene.
-
Looks great!
It seems heavy on targeting business users rather than consumers, so a bit more beginners stuff for basic features might be nice, but then again perhaps its best to let wallet providers like Moonstone go after that audience.
-
I just realised, the blue banner is made up of graphene molecules. Nice touch! +5%

We hadn't planned on it, as the site is focusing on BitShares as a smart contract platform with many features, not just the exchange feature.
Smart contracts are not even on the website, are they?
It's best to distinguish between "built-in" and "programmable" smart contracts. Many of the new features can be viewed as built-in smart contract types. More will be built in for max efficiency. Then generalized programmable smart contracts will be added when they are ready for prime time. But any insanely great smart contract types that emerge will tend to quickly get built in anyway for max efficiency. So "programmable" smart contracts, when available, can be viewed as a prototyping capability for developing and choosing those worthy of becoming built in during the next regularly scheduled round of updates.

yep guess something went wrong with Cloudflare setting up! pinged @vikram about!
This said, i've have to bump the meta/@mention thread ;)

So all referer links should be updated to https://github.com/bitshares/bitshares.github.io?
Is this new link permanent?

Apparently I've misunderstood what has happened. I thought the site moved. If it's still at bitshares.org our referrer links are good to go still.

Added.
Great! Thanks Vikram!

how do you intend to attract savers? Like people looking for a secure interest bearing investment? If there's a way you should highlight this
yes, this should be more obvious in my opinion.
Please have not had interest on their capital in years, so theres a market out there.

Through the bond market!

Bytemaster's Blog is MIA from the website? Probably done intentionally, it can still be found here http://bytemaster.github.io/ ... lots more broken links around the internet, maybe it would be good if things like this were redirected to their new home

I read recently that blockchain = community + protocol.
On this basis, making the links back to this forum and /r/bitshares more prominent and using consistent theming/styling would be good.
The crypto space is notorious for all the derivative 'get-rich-quick' alt-coins.
Making it easy to identify an activity community of users shows that the product is more than some hastily cobbled together whitepaper and website.
-
I'd just like to note, in case it affects others, that the registration page has moved.
There is a redirect if you're using the old link, but it's probably best to update your link (for referrals) to the new page here ... https://bitshares.org/register (https://bitshares.org/register)

Thx for your feedback.
Could you please explain, what you mean exactly?
-
I see no benefit in grey text over black; or light grey over white.. too many websites seem to opt for a lighter shades just to appear different but I think more contrast the better for being easy on the eye.. more impt where there's lots to read. Perhaps consider website standards tests for accessibility, if not already done.
-
If you want to highlight sections or dimm them to highlight other section, i can see benefits!

I was thinking about a unified theme/branding between the new site and these forums. The forum software is managed by bitsaffire I think? So maybe it's not possible.

I would love to assist on this task! I was asking taulant from bitsapphire several times to get access via FTP! Without luck yet!
I would also love to add a @mention plugin on forum .. so people will get informed when they get mentionend.

I've been updating my sites and have noticed that many previous links are still broken and have not been redirected like the DPOS related info. The docs dot bitshares subdomain is gone, if nothing else at least redirect the whitepapers to their new home as that is something many Internet sites have active links for.

I've migrated all links to here: https://bitshares.org/newsletters/
Original URL's for the Nullstreet PDFs should work again.
Still missing a copy of http://bitshares.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/News-Letter-08-July-2014.pdf if anyone can find it.
Haven't forgotten about the missing subdomains; I'll see what I can do.

If anyone wants to collect old content I can see about creating a general Archive section or something at some point. But for the time being most legacy content is low priority for me.
Dan or Stan might have copies of some of the old documents/papers.

@vikram (does paging work?)
Does the faucet have anti-automation measures in place? If not, perhaps this needs to be a priority before it gets abused by name squatters.
edit: I raised the issue in another thread and fav said:
don't think so. you have to auth with social networks, so it's probably too hard to set up.
So that sounds good...

I just meant on this forum, does using '@member' notify the member.
By the way, there's a link on the faucet page (https://faucet.bitshares.org/) which doesn't work for me. It's where it says:

The link on the faucet webpage (https://faucet.bitshares.org/) still isn't right.
"How to Register a BitShares Account" links to http://bytemaster.bitshares.org/tutorial/2015/01/03/How-to-Register-a-BitShares-Account/ (http://bytemaster.bitshares.org/tutorial/2015/01/03/How-to-Register-a-BitShares-Account/), which redirects to plain old https://bitshares.org/ (https://bitshares.org/).
Surely it should go to something more like https://bitshares.org/register/ (https://bitshares.org/register/)?
This simple problem could potentially stop many people from 'joining' BitShares...
