If you use configuration file don't forget to copy protoshares.conf as bitshares-pts.conf
Enjoy new version  :)

Where do I get to place a bet that the change of name leads to people freaking out and thinking they lost all their coins when they don't think to rename their config directory?  (Even the windows installer didn't rename C:\users\blah\AppData\protoshares for me!)

Am I just cynical about the competence of the average investor?

New version doesn't touch AppData\ProtoShares folder, instead it's creates new folder BitShares-PTS. You need to copy wallet.dat manually, and sure, it's also a good time to make a backup copy of your wallet.dat:

just to clarify.
on 28 february i have my pts wallet [Protoshares-Qt vp0.4.0] with some Pts inside.
To claim Bitshare, on 1 march i install bitshare-Pts wallet [BitShares-PTS v1.0.0].
How to procede to get bitsahre and see coins in bitshare-Pts wallet [BitShares-PTS v1.0.0]?
thankyou very much for the explanation!!!

March 1 will not have dl.  The ides of march is our target.  It has historic significance.

You don't need the pts wallet.  We will provide the bts wallet at that time.

Please do not confuse, BitShares-PTS and BitShares X.
BitShares-PTS it's a new name of ProtoShares (PTS), so BitShares-PTS Client it's a new version of the ProtoShares Client with few improvements.

This release is just an update to your current "ProtoShares" wallet.  You don't need to wait until after the 28th to switch to the new version.  This version gets rid of the lingering "Protoshares" name in favor of BitShares-PTS, since "Protoshares" turns out to be trademarked by someone else as the name of their entirely unrelated product.

After installing the new wallet, you will need to copy the "wallet.dat" file from your [username]\AppData\Protoshares directory into the new [username]\AppData\BitShares-PTS directory.

testz, ty very much for clasification!
so i rephrase with 2 questions :-)

1) on 1 march i install BitShares-PTS. If this new wallet point to %appconfig%/roaming/protoshare [windows here], can i see new PTS on my wallet? Or i need to do something else?

2) when bitshare X will be released, how i can claim my BitShareX for each BitShare-PTS?

thank you again!

Why no builds for Linux users?
How about setting up a ppa repository to host .deb packages for Ubuntu users?

True Linux users like to compile everything from sources.
Another problem, it's to many Linux and every Linux use self packaging, do we need to make packages for all kind of Linux? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Package_management_system

Bitcoin for Linux has .tgz and .ppa

hi testz!
just last question...
i need to update from PTS to Bitshare-PTS and then to import wallet.dat to the new wallet before 28 february or after?
Or maybe it is the same?
i don't want to loose my pts and i don't want to loose the opportunity to redeem Bitshare-X!!!

ty and have a nice day!!!

very true. however not every linux user know how to compile. btw is it posible to compile static build for linux? if yes, how?
i have some simple bash trick to run binary that -hopefully- will run on all distro. i'll provide sample later

Which problems do you have with BitShares-PTS? Crashes, not sync?

I tried on 2 PCs, Win 8. I would like to get it to work; on one PC it crashed on opening, on restart it refuses to sync. I will get the exact messages it throws up a bit later, just away from that PC till a bit later on.

But the only date that is critically important is February 28th.
(long before close of business GMT)
Have every PTS in one of your own wallets by then.
Don't leave anything out on an exchange or they will get your BitShares!

So those of us with fractional PTS in a mining pool, the pool will get the BitShares? And we will have to trust them to send us the new shares somehow?

please help. my address changed I lost 15.8 PTS. Help me with this. the address was PrD8Prp82YU3KDysoxfZ1pvbnbmERR6y1w
and it changed to

what can I do????? I'm panicking right now

EDIT: Okay, so for whatever reason, the protoshare wallet app reappeared after I had replaced it with my bitshare wallet app. Even though I could no longer find the app data folder for protoshare in the hidden folder for my library, from the protoshare app, I was able to make a backup of my wallet and load it into the Bitshare wallet.

Don't scare me like that next time.  :D If you want serious investors in the long-term future, you will have to keep the technology idiot friendly.

Just a quick question, is there any purpose of holding PTS beyond Feb 28th?

I've read people on here saying that there will be a mad rush to sell after feb 28th. I don't know if I should believe that. Surely there must be some other benefits?

All subsequent DACs that use I3 code will honor at least 10% share supply to PTS holders. I3 claims to have more awesome DACs in the pipeline but it looks like BTS X is the main cash cow at the moment.

from everything I've been reading the past month... it seems this would come down to your strategy... do you sell the bitshares pts to get money today, or do you hold on to them for potential future bitshares they create, for which you would get a small share of for each pts you own... the quote from their website is below...

""BitShares PTS comes with a social contract to allocate at least 10% of the total shares in all future BitShare chains to those who hold PTS when the new chain is launched.""

so do you want money now, or later... will it be worth more now, or later... its the big question?

Ah, okay, thanks. For some reason, the way I read it, everyone who owned PTS got Bitshare, and then for every Bitshare owned from that point onward, you received proportional stakes in all future bitassets. I had assumed PTS would become irrelevant by the point that Bitshares are issued but it seems that this may not be the case.

I have 500PTS and 300AGS and I'm just petrified to do anything right now.  I'm not technically savvy and I'm not changing wallets until someone comes up with step by step instructions for dummies.   Will I be ok for the 28th if I just keep using the old PTS wallet?

March 1 will not have dl.  The ides of march is our target.  It has historic significance.

You don't need the pts wallet.  We will provide the bts wallet at that time.

wow nice ;)

But the only date that is critically important is February 28th.
(long before close of business GMT)
Have every PTS in one of your own wallets by then.
Don't leave anything out on an exchange or they will get your BitShares!

(We can't repeat this enough.)
did i get it right, that the 28th of february is NOT a test of the bitshare-system with all the pts and ags around it?
is it the real launch-date for bitshares?

Not launch date, but snapshot date.  You won't get the BitSharesX software then, but you need to have all your AGS donations in and all your PTS in a wallet you control by then in order to get BTS from them when the launch occurs.

Which problems do you have with BitShares-PTS? Crashes, not sync?
I get this issue, it then closes the wallet. Any suggestions?

o.k. snapshot-date = 2014-02-28
for PTS and AGS?
what about the PTS mined after the 28th of february?
that PTS will only count for the next DAC - with a new snapshot-date?
is the AGS-generation closed at this date - though the donations to get AGS?

Correct.  PTS mined after the snapshot and AGS for donations after the snapshot will be relevant for future DACs released after BitSharesX.

I test BitShares-PTS in Windows 8 x64, its works without any problems.
Looks like you familiar with wallet files and to save time, move/copy ProtoShares files to BitShares-PTS folder. Please try to delete these files and sync wallet from scratch. After this everything should work fine.
Please don't forget to backup wallet.dat file before any changes!!!

Let's us know about results.

well, I am afraid I may have lost my PTS. I elected to send them from the old client to the address of my new one. Seeing as how there's "0 active connections to the network" on my old client and displays the outbound transfer with an account balance of zero, it feels like my PTS may have vanished into "space"

any insights?

I decided to run both wallets simultaneously on two separate computers. PTS have been sent and received. Next time I'll just copy paste the wallet dat and make sure to backup before the upgrade

My question is, where do I have to copy the wallet file?

Edit: In case I want to build it, could someone post the lines for the terminal please?
(I already build the PTSMiner so I guess I have all dependencies)

Run BitShares-PTS.exe its will create folder under /.wine/drive_c/users/<yourname>/Application Data with new wallet.dat
Close BitShares-PTS
Override wallet.dat with your wallet.dat
Please don't forget to backup wallet.dat file before any changes!!!

I installed on Win7 x64, copied over the wallet.dat from the %appdata%\ProtoShares folder to the new %appdata%\BitShares-PTS folder. It downloaded the full blockchain and everything appears to be in working order. 8)

Seem to be much faster when launching, I think my old version only every had 1 red bar on the connection status, I now have 3 right away.

I met a problem when using new BitShares-PTS 1.0 wallet. I install the new wallet and copy wallet.dat to new folder then run it. The new wallet run and sync all block normally. But when I open wallet second time it said 'error loading block database. Do you want to rebuild the block database now'. I click ok and then it appeared 'assertion failed file:db/version_set.cc line:751 expression:dummy_version_.next_==&dummy_versions_'. I try to reinstall wallet but still the same.

My system is win7 32bit, previous wallet is V0.8.5 and it works fine.

1. Make a copy of your ProtoShares wallet.dat, on the Mac it's located in user/Library/Application Support/ProtoShares
2. Move the BitShares-PTS folder: user/Library/Application Support/BitShares-PTS to another location, just to have a copy of it.
3. Start BitShares-PTS, it's should start syncing, wait until it's syncs
4. Close BitShares-PTS and copy ProtoShares wallet.dat from your copy to user/Library/Application Support/BitShares-PTS, override existing empty BitShares-PTS wallet.dat
5. Run BitShares-PTS, you should see your balance

This one will work, or if you have the older Protoshares branded one, you're still safe. If you do have the older one, you may want to install this latest release and copy over your wallet.dat file.

OK, so I jumped and installed the new wallet early.

I have 1.24PTS in my wallet as of this morning, as I just started mining a few days ago with a couple of 7870's and a couple of 560ti's. (Surprisingly, not as far apart in performance as you would think.)

My ORIGINAL PLAN was to swap this over into the market asap, but then I read up again on this ordeal... I guess I am supposed to receive an equal amount in BTS on the 28th or something? I've tried combing through the posts... maybe someone can elaborate a little better for me if it's not too much trouble.

You'll be able to receive 1.3 BTS for every PTS you hold through February28th; the BTS is allocated like a dividend so you'll still own all your PTS.  I suggest holding onto PTS after Feb28th because they'll enable you to receive a stake on all future DACs released by Invictus in the future as well.

I'm not a developer for this project, so I can't help much, but I don't think you need to have installed QT - it could be a problem with how QT was packaged with the app.
I do know that if qt can't find all the dynamic libraries it needs then it can abort in that same way.

I'm having issues trying to get the wallet to show.  As soon as I open it it goes into the tray and I can't get it to pop up on my screen.  Even uninstalling/reinstalling doesn't fix the issue.

Edit:

Turns out the wallet doesn't like to Show when I have my 1440p monitor set as my main display.

Bitshares don't exist yet. Where are all these people getting the assumption that bitshares is done?

Then why was there a an announcment saying to make sure we have our PTS in our wallet on the 28th o_O

also, if I purchase some more PTS now, will I still receive the bit shares from the new PST?

There was a snapshot on the 28th. Keep that wallet, when bts arrives you will use it to claim bts.

so, this client is useless until bitshares-PTS is released I gather and we should not/cannot transfer PTS to this client?

This client is current and works great for sending and receiving Bitshares PTS (formerly known as Protoshares). It's the Bitshares XT client we're waiting for at this point.

smh. I thought it was odd enough that I had just come across this client after downloading the Protoshares client from the main website the other day ... and now I find out there's yet another client that I need to wait on. color me confused (again).  ???

I just found out tonight that I could have received 3x more BTS had I bought AGS vs PTS as well. So I'm starting to see ABL's point about the general public's inability to find all of this evolving information, much less finding it in time to be able to act in one's own best interest, assuming you still have the means to do so.

I have downloaded the new BTS wallet. I run the application and I had the message to rebuild the block chain etc that was posted earlier by another user...

I have  deleted everything on the BTS folder and re run the application and it was synchronizing...

Before it fully synchronised I have sent som PTS from cryptsy.

Once fully synchronised my transaction still didn't appear, so I thought to restart the application, but I get again the same message about rebuild the block chain etc...

Can you please advise what I have to do?Please explain with simple dirrections as I am newbie to all these and I don't understand things very well. I read somewhere I think that I have to rename my conf file but I don't knowwhat the conf file is...

Thanks for your help...

Simple wait until client rebuild the block chain and wait for you transaction from cryptsy.
Because current PTS rate, miners lost interest for mining PTS and network slow down, you transaction will arive in few hours.
You can watch for current blocks and transactions in one of the block explorer, like:

I assume that you use BitShares-PTS version 1.0.0. I seen this error message only when I run BitShares-PTS client with copied blockchain from ProtoShares folder.

Please make wallet.dat backup from ProtoShares and BitShares-PTS folder, delete completelly BitShares-PTS and ProtoShares folder and run BitShares-PTS client again.
Wait when it's start and download 100-200 blocks, close the client and run again, if you will get same error, post debug.log file, if not, you are set and wait until it's download blockchain.

yep.. that's the case.

Try not to use you balance before all sync is done. And.. have a good amount of trusted nodes to broadcast your transaction. It helps you and the network.. to meet good standing when transacting. =)

Simply generalizing this.. just keep it like a torrent baseline action.. the more peers you have the most download/upload ratio you will have. Therefore the higher chance you have to download faster! (get the transaction synced)

I think I am fine now. I have deleted everything again except my wallet.dat and it appears that when I open and close and reopen the application it works...It is still synchronising but hopeffuly once this is done I will see my transaction...I hope...

If something goes wrong I will let you guys know...

As I understand everything on your pc is affected if you allow outside access via openssl on your pc. Conversely if you don't allow access to your pc via openssl, than nobody can use your ssl-connection to read your pc memory 64kb at a time and figuring out your passwords or privatekeys.  This is one of the nice aspects of bitcoin is that all trafic is unencrypted anyway, so who cares who reads the public messages.

BTW you should not allow remote access to pcs with your private keys anyway, this is not the only and certainly not the last security leak that will be discovered. Come to think of it, iirc there was a similar bug in microsofts rpc-implementation that remained unfixed well into the Windows-NT's, I haven't heard of it being fixed yet. So again, be very careful when using pcs with connection to the internet, I can't wait for multisig and more cold-storage solutions.

Under "wallet software" I mean BitShares-PTS software. BitShares-PTS wallet software is not affected by bug in OpenSSL.

No, even mining to wallet can't be affected because it's not using OpenSSL.

Currently because a lack of miners the network works very slow, to send the funds you should wait 10-12 hours.

4 hours is normal recently. It is because the PTS block rate is very slow, usually several hours even 10+ hours for one block. I think you are good, just wait for another several hours to see if there is confirmation.

You can also check here to see if your wallet is sync, http://ptsexplorer.cloudapp.net/chain/BitShares-PTS

I finally managed to import my old protoshare wallet.dat into the BitsharesX 1.0.0 and after a few minutes the PTS were converted into BTSX  8)

Now my next question is:
How do I mine/hatch or otherwise acquire more BTSX other than buying them?
I have the client open but not sure if I need to initiate some command in order to mine?
This might belong in another thread but I can't seem to find one?

You can't mine BTSX, you can promote yourself as delegate and if you get enough votes you will participate in block creation.

I have the client open but not sure if I need to initiate some command in order to mine?
This might belong in another thread but I can't seem to find one?

You can't mine BTSX, you can promote yourself as delegate and if you get enough votes you will participate in block creation.
More info about DPOS: http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/DPOS
Delegate election thread: https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?board=61.0

aha I see - thx

Question, is the 2M cap a hard limit? what happens at 2M?

if the 2M cap is a hard limit, then I assume PoW mining will no longer work after the cap is reached?

No 2M not hard limit: "Total coins: Around 2 million, with 1% inflation after 2 years" (see OP: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=325261.0)
But until end of this year we have plans to move BitShares PTS onto BitShares toolkit (DPOS).

Is your wallet locked? You can't dumpprivkey unless you've already run walletpassphrase and unlocked the wallet.

Long confirmation times on PTS are normal due to its archaic difficulty adjustment algorithm. Essentially it's a very poorly-designed bitcoin clone that doesn't incentivize mining very effectively. Don't worry, your transaction will go through. Mine took over an hour yesterday.
