Title: Ides of March
Post by: bdnoble on March 12, 2014, 01:35:00 pm
The Ides of march are nearly upon us. Is there any status update to say that we are on track for the first XT release?

Or should we beware the Ides of March?

:o

That was given as an "earliest possible", bytemaster called it "optimistic".

Yeah I remember that. I brought it up because www.MasterCoin.org (http://www.MasterCoin.org) has chosen to launch their Distributed Exchange on the Ides of March. So based on the current competition its worth noting that we should try to get out the MVP sooner than later. I do believe that we ultimately have the better product but the longer we wait the more we start to risk our "First" status.

No pressure.

Isn't the Mastercoin decentralized exchange initially coming out with just the ability to trade Mastercoins on it and nothing more? If that is the case, would it be much different than the centralized exchange that currently handles buys/sells of Mastercoins?

Yeah MSC decentralized exchange is just for assets on MSC, I think XCP already has this.
You can't do better than trade IOUs

As toast mentioned, Counterparty has had a "working" distributed exchange and custom asset management system for over a month now, and they are in no way threatening BitShares. BitShares does things that Counterparty and Mastercoin aren't built to do, so I wouldn't be too worried about launching a couple weeks later than Mastercoin. And don't forget about Second-Mover Advantage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-mover_advantage#Second-mover_advantage).

I still have my XCP in the burn address because it's just way too technical for me to unlock them.  From what I understand, Counterparty is alpha quality and buggy right now.  The only people using the DEx are tech types that can navigate around the start-up.  There is no way ordinary people can figure out how to use it.  It seems too complicated to me.  Did they launch too soon?  Do you really consider XCP a first mover?  I'm very confident that whatever Mastercoin comes out with on the 15th will be much more user friendly than Counterparty.

Do the assets traded on the MSC decentralized exchange allow you protect against volatility by locking in your profits into a pegged asset like BitUSD?

I was always suspicious of Mastercoin ever since I first heard of it because its name attempts to make it sound flashy, and it seems to try to do everything (just like Ethereum). It also piggy backs on top of the Bitcoin blockchain which Gavin has criticized as spam. I really liked the Bitshares X concept because it has a simple important value proposition, and its not marketed by BS.

How about the Ides of April?

"The Ides: March 15, April 13, May 15, June 13, July 15, August 13, September 13, October 15, November 13, December 13, January 13, February 13"
