General Discussion / BitShares source code?
« on: November 27, 2013, 10:05:58 am »
Is the source code available anywhere? I found a github page, but it doesn't look like there's been a commit in over a month.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found the new one: https://github.com/InvictusInnovations/BitShares

General Discussion / Re: BTS vs. ETF
« on: November 26, 2013, 05:40:40 am »
There has been talk of a potential BTC ETF in the works. Would this compete with BTS? Is this seen as a major threat to the viability of BTS?
BTC ETF is just a way for ordinary investors who don't want to deal with the technicalities of Bitcoin own a piece of the Bitcoin pie.
BTS is a trading platform that allows, through a prediction marketplace, to trade just about anything, including, bitBTC.
I don't see how the former will threaten the latter.

I'm not sure. I'm trying to get a friend to consider investing some of his BTC returns into PTS, but he's concerned that a BTC ETF may make PTS/BTS an unprofitable investment.

General Discussion / Re: BitShares Currency Exchange (BSCurEx)

Is BSCurEX (mentioned in the white paper) going to launch along with BTS? If not when is it planned, and what will we be able to invest BTS in in the meantime?

Also, once it does launch, wouldn't the best investment just be to rush bitBTC? That way you can ride it to its equilibrium, ride it as it follows BTC (which is appreciating in a fairly predictable manner) AND get BTS dividends?

BitShares has to rise in value to 2x the value of all BitBTC created.    So demand for BitBTC will cause demand for BitShares to rise faster.   If you want to 'play it safe', then BitBTC will give you the capital appreciation of Bitcoin + Dividends but personally, I would Short BitBTC relative to BTS.

Shorting BitBTC means what? Just holding BTS? Doesn't holding uninvested BTS incur penalties?

Also, Is BSCurEX planned to launch along with BTS?

BSCurEx is just another name for the BitShares system.  They are one and the same.

Shorting BitBTC means you expect the price of BTC to fall relative to BTS.   No penalties for holding BTS.. where did you get that idea?  Holding BTS pays dividends.

Perhaps I misinterpreted the white paper:

"Another aspect of the BitShare block-chain is that all unspent outputs must be less than one year old.   Outputs that go unspent for more than 1 year forfeit their dividends and are charged a 5% transaction fee to move their output forward in the chain.  Balances below the average transaction fee are forfeited entirely."

General Discussion / Re: Transition from PTS to Bitshares
« on: November 25, 2013, 02:30:17 pm »
Once you redeem your BTS from your PTS, is there any point in holding onto PTS? Also, once PTS are already used to redeem BTS, can they not be used again? So someone buying PTS won't know if they're getting PTS+BTS or just PTS?
You never lose your PTS, you'll just get additional shares in every DAC. So say if you're holding on to 100 PTS at the launch, after the launch of BitShares, you'll have 100 PTS + 100 BTS. The value of PTS might fall but it still has value because Invictus or other community members might come up with other DACs in the future and honor the same social contract of giving initial shares to PTS holders. Invictus has publicly announced their social contract - every DAC they create will be forked from ProtoShares which means by holding ProtoShares, you get a share of each of the Invictus DACs in the future. That's why they're valuable.

Ah, I see. Do I get Keyhotee rep/name for holding PTS?

Is there incentive for other groups to release their DACs forked from PTS? Or is the success of PTS post-BTS launch pretty much entirely dependent on the success of Invictus' other DACs?

Also, I'm not sure if you addressed my other question. Let's say Alice has 1PTS which she redeems for 1BTS. She then sells her 1PTS to Bob for 10BTC (It doesn't hurt to dream! ;)). Bob takes the 1PTS he just bought and attempts to use it to redeem 1BTS. What happens?

General Discussion / DelieveryDAC?
« on: November 25, 2013, 01:14:49 pm »
With the advent of sophisticated autonomous navigation systems, could a DAC exchange invested bitshares for BTC which are then used to purchase autonomous cars, quadrocopter swarms, etc... and then use these devices to deliver physical objects and people from one location to another, returning the delivery fee as a profit to investors?

Do you guys have a dev blog or anything? I'd love to be kept up to date on how BTS is going without having to slog through the source code itself.

Whats the ETA right now? 5 months or so?
