General Discussion / Re: Implementing AdSense into BitShares Forum
« on: September 12, 2015, 01:23:44 pm »
Thanks for all the feedback guys!

This was definitely not an easy decision for us, we don't like ads and were looking for alternatives for quite some time. We spent over 5k USD on server/domain/ssl/anti-ddos/backups since we took over the forum (even though participation has fallen since the devs are working on their stuff, lurkers are plenty).

We pretty much need 500 USD/month to cover all or costs. We don't expect to make that with adsens, but it's at least something.

Has anyone here read the topic I posted regarding Bitteaser, it seems this is exactly what Bitteaser is offering that you are in fact looking for, and if you can make money in the same time, then why not instead of considering an expensive Google solution!!

Thanks. Reading up on it!

General Discussion / Implementing AdSense into BitShares Forum
« on: September 11, 2015, 08:32:57 pm »
Today we are going to implement Google AdSense into bitsharestalk.org.
These ads will help us cover server and maintenance cost.
We hope their presence will not cause any inconvenience.

Moonstone current progress

As you know, blockchain technology is rapidly developing. People from the banking, music and many other industries are finding it can be a game-changer for them. This makes blockchain technology one of the most dynamic, unpredictable, and disruptive industries to be in. These are exciting times! And our Moonstone is trying to forge a way into the future.

Pic. 1.0 - Market Depth Chart

We are developing blockchains for some time now, and it’s difficult to end up with an elegant piece of code. When utilizing the complex concepts from the financial world, software development and cryptography, in order to bring about functionality that has never been seen before, you end up with a lot of tangled up C++ code. And with the pace of development this industry has, overnight everything changes and you need to adapt. Refactoring of the codebase into something SOLID principles is also often out of the question once the code is up and running, due to the fear of disrupting the network. We have definitely experienced all of this with Moonstone.

Furthermore, very few people understand blockchains on a fundamental level, and those who say they do, have trouble explaining them. Few have actually used one in its raw sense. Even fewer people understand the nuanced functions of distributed ledgers, immutability, distributed or centralized time stamping, or optimisation requirements. Most throw all of these into a single bucket which they call “blockchain”.

Since Graphene got published on Github, we have been utilizing our resources to understand its range of capabilities. We originally planned to release Moonstone Alpha on Bitshares 1.0, but we decided to dive into Graphene.

Graphene, is still under development, nonetheless we have managed to integrate Moonstone with it. Currently we can: create markets and perform transactions successfully, create and search other users’ on-chain, transact with user-friendly names and public keys.

Moonstone’s mission is to be the intuitive one-stop interface for every blockchain out there, with a slick design and UX that can be easily integrated by every blockchain developer.
Buying, selling, exchanging, and transacting tokens all done in on the fly with an easy to use interface. We aim to keep it like that with every blockchain we integrate.

Features that we have been working on since the fundraiser:
  • Fluid asset pair search as well as market creation.
  • Transaction status icons: completed, pending and failed (color coded too). Checked on chain.
  • Transaction progress bar.
  • Advanced user search and auto-fill.
  • Advanced signup flow.

We are waiting for the final release of Bitshares 2.0 to do final testing of Moonstone.

We would like to thank everyone that has tested our demo interface and sent us feedback. Your comments and suggestions have been invaluable to us and have guided us in our market interface modifications as well as the signup flow!

General Discussion / Maintenance thread
« on: July 21, 2015, 11:36:58 am »
We are making a few changes to our hosting infrastructure to better support the growth in volume of users and the geographic diversity of our visits. For this reason the forum will not be available temporarily between 11PM and 3AM Central time Wednesday 22nd July.

The forum software is going to stay the same, we are simply transferring everything to AWS.

EDIT 1:
Our next maintenance is scheduled on Sunday evening 07/26 from 11PM to 3AM CST. During this time we might experience service outage.

Edit 2:
We have moved to a new server, please report any problem here. Thank you for your support and sorry for any inconvenience.

General Discussion / Re: Banks and exchanges turn to blockchain
« on: July 03, 2015, 11:51:43 am »
They are all currently only experimenting with dedicated teams. Most of them have still no idea where they can use blockchains or if it even is something useful to them.

Once major issue for them is that they feel like there is no standard out there yet. Banks want the equivalent of Linux for their servers, or Oracle databases for their databases for their tech. Blockchain tech needs to be as standardized and commoditized as possible. Blockchain tech is going to be commoditized, and it's not necessarily going to be the best option, simply the one that fits the bill best.

It's going to take years until financial institutions start to use blockchain tech for industrial purposes for real.

General Discussion / Re: One way to start a conversation about Greece
« on: July 03, 2015, 10:28:06 am »
Someone should try to contact Varoufakis, Liondanni?!!

@bitsapphire - AFAIK .. you were getting in contact with him on last hackathon in Singapure... don't you?

I actually had the chance to have a great discussion with him before he became finance minister, back when he was at Valve. He is among the smartest people I know.

Bitshares is not at the stage where it can help Greece. We are still at the innovation and product development stage. Though Bitshares is both the most advanced tech and community (we already made and fixed the technical and community mistakes Ethereum is just starting to go through). No government should even consider using crypto until it gets to the industrial-grade level, which is another 1-3 years in the future. Patience my friends. :)

That said, I would not be surprised if a government switched their entire financial system to crypto within the next 5-10 years. I am pretty sure, that if the tech was ready V-man would definitely consider issuing IOUs redeemable at interest and usable for tax payment. That would be the ideal solution to the Greek crisis atm and he has written about this already in his blog.

General Discussion / Privatized Smartcoin questions
« on: June 24, 2015, 05:34:02 pm »
@bytemaster

  • Will it be possible for the Private Smartcoin (PSC) creator to specify which assets can be used for collateralization?
  • Will the PSC feed issuer need to supply a price feed for all assets which can be used as collateral?
  • Could the price feed for each collateral be set as the last trading price of that asset/PSC pair on the decentralized exchange? That way you only need an initializer and then the price feed becomes blockchain endogenous.

If the above is possible than PSC creators/providers would have exclusively a certification authority function rather than an information providing function. Certifying for use certain gateway IOUs as well as IDs which can hold the PSCs. Legally this would shield them a lot and the users could hold a stable asset without needing to be exposed to the counterparty risk of the individual gateway issuers.

The exchange rate between those gateway IOUs and and the PSC would effectively represent the counterparty risk of the gateway (as assessed through the market) together with with order book depth between the individual gateway IOUs and the PSC. Effectively, this would function like an insurance for users.

We've been working on a similar system (Pactum) for some time at Bitsapphire. If this is possible it could open up a new business model in the Bitshares ecosystem.

How did bitshares ever let Roger Ver  sweep down and poach this project?

The answer to that is easy: Bitcoin maximalism.

The real question is why aren't we able to convince Augur to use our platform rather than the much slower Ethereum (plus we already have BitUSD working while they are still working on eDollar).

As far as I am informed they aren't actually building on top of Etheruem. They plan on forking Ethereum and doing an ethereum-bitcoin sidechain that supports both eth sha3 as well as btc sha2.

Additionally the Ethereum VM is being used for experimentation purposes by most institutions looking into blockchain tech at this point as the barriers to entry are practically zero. It's developing into a standard. That said, based on what I've read so far on BTS2.0, the technical decisions that have gone into 2.0 are superior in almost every way to the EVM.

prediction markets without smart coins don't work.    The volatility of the underlying asset overwhelms any profit or loss made by predicting the outcome of the event.

No-order book prediction markets can work only if the underlying asset is an IOU. That IOU in turn is only stable if it is a representation of another IOU. It needs to be a recursive system in time rather than a self-referential system. I can only think of one way how to do that on a blockchain.

A no-order book prediction market has several advantages to the smartcoin setup for actual predictive value. As far as I am up to date, the current smartcoin setup isn't technically a *prediction" market as it has no predictive value, it's more like an advanced schelling coin setup which pushed all market members towards a information focal point.

Meta / Re: Proposal: get a 2.0 Forum with the Launch of BitShares 2.0
« on: June 19, 2015, 10:49:40 pm »
I'd support migrating to Discourse, which seems to be what all the cool kids use these days.

The only reason we haven't switched to Discourse is because there are no good mobile clients for it. About half of the bitsharestalk traffic is mobile (especially China).

Has peertracks donated to moonstone as promised?

No. Peertracks decided to go with an integrated wallet interface instead (build by Bitsapphire). I can't disclose much more than that unfortunately. Nonetheless, Moonstone will work with MUSIC tokens once the chain is online.

I was told back then once the crowdfund ended, it would take more or less  a month for the wallet to be released, will we have it by mid July?

That's still our plan. Obviously some things have changed due to the Bitshares 2.0 announcement. Our current plan is to release the almost completely functional app within the same timeline as originally announced, and then release the final production ready version with Bitshares 2.0 integration asap. Obviously, the referral program is potentially a game-changer for our business model.
