Keyhotee / Re: Live blockchain
« on: May 06, 2014, 08:20:16 am »
Hi Populus,

Keyhotee is temporarily taking a backseat to other priorities at the moment.  They have pulled the developers who were working on it so everyone can focus on bitshares XT for now.  You aren't really late to the party for investing.  You'll have to wait to invest in bitshares XT (the test chain of bitshares X) until it launches because the initial allocation "snapshot" has past.  But, you can still invest in everything else that comes afterward by buying BitShares PTS or by sending BitShares PTS or BTC to the AGS address.  BitShares PTS is pretty cheap at the moment as it has come down in price along with the rest of crypto so it's a better deal than it was a month or so ago.

I think your voice-over or copywriter skills may be useful to the community, thanks for offering!  If you notice needed corrections or suggestions for the bitshares.org website you can let people know.

when someone who already has bitUSD sells it to someone who is short bitUSD, it is destroyed.

oh sorry , i think i should have started with my definition of capitalism, here we go:

For me capitalism is our actual system based on infinite growth.
Infinite growth is the esence of capitalism and its result from competition.
Competition in the system impose to each capitalist the necessity of growing

tipon, You can't stop people from being competitive or motivated by self interest and you seem to think this is the root problem that leads to "infinite growth" which is your definition of capitalism.  I don't think the definition makes much sense.  Bytemaster said to define capitalism by the actions that lead to it, so you say the action that leads to it is competition.  Well, competition can't be avoided, people are not inherently altruistic otherwise you might just give away all your money.

tipon, You seem to be thinking of growth in terms of environmental impact, natural resources consumed etc.

Do you think if people were cooperating in a "non capitalist" way that there won't be growth?  Would there still be population growth?

Maybe what you mean by capitalism causing growth is how others have mentioned that inflation can cause people to spend more recklessly because their money will be worth less tomorrow than it is today so you basically have to spend it now and this might be wasteful.

I think a lot of growth in terms of natural resources consumed is caused by population growth; perhaps this would happen regardless of capitalism.  A lot of other species grow exponentially until they max out their resources, habitat, food sources etc. and then stabilize

General Discussion / Re: A Call to the Truthcoin Prediction Market
« on: April 30, 2014, 05:01:15 pm »
I imagine market depth and voting participation would be important to Truthcoin.  For example if I can go big on a bet and take over 50% of one side (using sybil attack/sockpuppets/collusion with friends) and then I use that power to force the voting in my favor even if it's not the real outcome I can take the money.  For example all my voting shares vote to say that Mitt Romney won the 2012 election and I get the majority vote so I take the money of the people who bet on Obama; you could pick smaller bets that have less participation to use this attack.  I imagine you have thought of ways to deal with it, just pointing out the most obvious attack.

Technical Support / Re: Starting to get "it"
« on: April 26, 2014, 01:09:32 pm »
Without knowing it, we already use digital currencies as proxies for "real money" by way of bank to bank and nation to nation computer based account ledgers. We buy with plastic and think we're spending dollars, but the dollars exists only as a historical artifact of a time where paper certificates proxied for gold and silver.

Part of the disparity in the wealth of nations and individuals, comes from the very centralized control and arbitrary creation of "money". Quantitative easing has shown once again, that governments, not people decide the value and availability of "money", and those closest to those agencies, benefit first.

There is a reason why the magically appearing "dollars" of QE went directly to institutions and were NOT used to fund nation building at home or the employment of the jobless during the recession. To make things even worse, while the bankers were getting rich, the value of the common man's dollar went down.

Our existing currency does not serve the needs of the many, but the needs of the few. When gain the common man experiences is largely an artifact.

I'm not sure who or what is going to create a viable and accepted alternative currency, but I am sure its going to happen.

I see so many parallels to the early days of "micro-computers" with what's happening right now with Bitcoin and the like...

Remember this guy before he became the $1 Trillion dollar man?

General Discussion / Re: A DAC is a Sovereign Co-op
« on: April 24, 2014, 03:34:11 am »
OK, I like where you are going.  Accurate metaphors are very powerful, the DAC concept definitely gave me a new way of looking at BTC.  So someone who only trades in bitUSD is still considered a shareholder of bitshares X?

That's correct.

Perhaps it's more accurate in some respects.  I don't think people are as familiar with the term co-op; it might be harder to imagine shares that grow in value with a co-op compared to a company.

I think REI and some mutual insurance companies are technically co-ops but most people might not make the distinction

In any case, I think the best way to explain it is to build it.  There are a lot of things that people would never think were possible until they saw it with their own eyes.  Most people don't know how their TVs or Cars really work but once they see it in action you don't need to convince them or explain it anymore.

I think the value of a DAC that "does something" might end up being easier for people to get than bitcoin.

General Discussion / Re: MaidSafe IPO on Mastercoin
« on: April 23, 2014, 07:34:17 pm »
Yea, when everything I read seemed to suggest the service was supposed to be free and not paid for in safecoin I didn't post it because it just seemed so crazy that I thought there had to be a misunderstanding.  I guess not.

Adam,
don't worry if these posts are down on maidsafecoin, not many of the investors are reading this.  If you bought MSC before the run up in price and got in on the IPO I think you'll be ok for a good while.

I wouldn't recommend sending BTC;  even though the MSC side is closed David Johnston with MSC/bitangels has been responding to posts by angry MSC bagholders by telling them not to worry and to email him because he will "hook them up"

So anyone else who overpaid for MSC and didn't wake up at 3AM for the IPO, email David, maybe he can hook you up.

Imagine if youtube had a value system to rank how good videos are and whenever you watched a video you could say if it is crappy and ranked too high or if it is a great video that people will really like and is ranked too low.  And then if you predict correctly and a video that you "upvote" becomes more popular or a video that you "downvote" continues to be less popular and is downvoted by others, then you get paid.  If you pump a crappy video, others will watch it and get pissed off for having their time wasted and downvote it and then you lose money because you bet on a losing horse.

I think the model is something along those lines.

To be honest, I haven't yet taken the time fully understand the incentive structure of BitShares Music; I do think the bitshares music and bitshares insurance DACs are somewhat complex and not immediately as intuitive as something like a bitshares Lotto.

Although the data that makes up a music file is not any more scarce than storing and transmitting any other data and can easily be copied, the time and attention of the listener is scarce.

My understanding is that you are rewarding or paying people who are able to bring good music to the attention of the listener who will enjoy it.  Essentially you will pay me money if I am great at bringing great music to your attention so you don't have to wade through a bunch of crap because your time and attention is valuable to you.

I don't think the goal is to restrict access to the music like most systems such as itunes do today.
