Title: Can't open wallet but have private keys
Post by: cubicdissection on August 18, 2015, 08:14:18 pm
Hi Guys, I tried opening my BTS wallet for the first time in months but it keeps telling me I have the wrong password.  Which is odd; I know it's right.  I installed the latest version; same problem.  Uninstalled and rebooted and reinstalled; same problem.  I have the private keys so I'd really like to just delete everything, reinstall fresh, create a new wallet and import the keys but I can't figure out how to do that.  Every time it asks me for a password, even on a fresh install.  Any ideas?

We see this issue with older wallets ... luckily you can fix it with these steps:

1) install version 0.5.4
2) open it up and import you most recent backup from %APPDATA%\BitShares\wallets\.backups\default   (not the dot in front of "backup")
3) after successfull import, close the client again
4) install version 0.9.2
5) restart client ..
6) sync up with the network

.. then everything should be fine

Good luck

Thanks.  Everything worked until step six.  The software completely pegs my computer, sucking up all memory and causing errors all over the place.  SO I rebooted and left it alone to do its thing.  Now it keeps crashing and retarting fresh.  Furthest I've gotten is 50% caught up.  What a clusterfuck.

Syncing process takes alot of IO and processing power .. for that reason BTS2 will be different in design .. where you can simply connect to ANY node and use that node to enter the network with a GUI.

@xeroc: Is there any reason a user should go through all of this hassle when they can just use the web wallet?  Maybe you can give him instructions on how to import his balances into the web wallet.

The advantage of running a network node on your own is that you do not need to trust a remote API server ...
Once the API and the wallet is stable, I'll try to do some more howtos
