Bitcoin and all its clones use a lowercase "c". What should the official nomenclature be for bit + shares?
-
Brian had declared it shall be "BitShares"

I can remember a post from Stan and Dan saying the same .. for me it's always been BitShares!
-
other options:
bitshares
bitShares
I like the upper-case S, as other terms within it follow that pattern: BitAssets, BitUSD, etc.. I also like it as it's more clear to read. With bitcoin, a 't' followed by a 'c' does not link phonetically, so it's unambiguously 'bit' + 'coin'. However with Bitshares, a 't' followed by an 's' is a common phonetic link, and therefore the division can be ambiguous for those who have never seen the word before. 'Bits' + 'hares' or even 'Bitsh' + 'ares'.

I honestly can't decide, no preferance.
Actually "Bits hares", or "Bitsh are 's" (like toys r us).
-
BitCoin always looked weird to me, Bitcoin looks better.
BitShares doesn't look as weird, but I still think I prefer Bitshares.
-
Bitshares looks better, BitShares just looks like another asset, like BitGLD or something

Yes, me too
-
btw. what we are doing here is actually "bitsharing" ;)
not anyone for "bitshares" then, all s?
-
I voted Bitshares with a lowercase s. In my opinion, it looks more professional and is consistent with industry nomenclature.

I voted for BitShares, however after having a second thought I must admit that Bitshares looks (and sounds when read as one word) more fluid! This is like an organic new word symbolising the paradigm, not a "linguistic invention"...
Perhaps you could have MicroSoft, EBay, AliBaba, FaceBook... But this doesn't look right now.
On the other hand, we do have PayPal and YouTube

+5% I agree

I vote for all lowercase
bitshares
or
bitShares (like bitAssets )
I agree with METHOdox but I want the "b" also lowercase because of our logo (b)... what's the point of our logo else?

@MeTHoDx - before late, would you kindly recast the poll with five options?
1. BitShares
2. Bitshares
3. bitShares
4. bitshares
5. BITSHARES - this one for completeness ;)

I'd probably go with "BitShares".

Or if you listened to the last part of Bytemasters mumble-hangout with the Chinese community where he talks about the gift-economy.
bitSharing
bitGift
shareBits
giftBits
or the best one:
GiftShares
Honestly if we are to rebrand anyway, in the name of all that is (un)holy, loose the "bit". No more bit. Ever.

unfortunate thing for German speakers is that "Gift", even if used in English, is subconsciously associated with its German meaning "poison"...

How about we drop the "bit" part all together to make it more approachable by average 'Joe'. What I've noticed when talking to friends about Bitshares or Bitcoin they get thrown off my "bit" part, maybe it makes it sound more high tech or too geeky for them but I have never liked it.
Some suggestions:
1. iShares (Internet)
2. eShares (electronic)
3. DigiShares (digital)
4.BlockShares (Block for block chain)
5. CloudShares
6. vShares (virtual)

Yes +radiusofastraightline% drop the "bit", makes no sense and it is weak brand even for bitCoin as a reference to it's inspiration bittorrent. Please come up with a name that better describes what it is or does. If were are rebranding anyway, fix this weak name and no "i" or "e" either, those went out of fashion even before bittorrent got fashionable.
Hell if people are stuck with single letters use something like DShares short for delegated-shares or distributed-shares.

I will invariably end up calling it bitshares. I just won't be able to bother capitalizing it properly every time.

I probably wouldn't change the name at this stage.
(I actually think the Bit works quite well in BitAssets, like BitUSD, BitGold.)
However if you were dropping the 'bit', you'd probably drop the 'shares' too, not needed. You could just have a unique brand name. Either something derived from consensus/unity/decentralisation etc. or even something entirely new.

The name is BitShares' greatest asset. Rolls off the tongue, easily recognizable, simple, obvious. You'd have to be crazy to throw away one of the brand's greatest strengths. eShares? Digishares? God-awful.
On topic and back to the realm of sanity...I'd say either Bitshares or BitShares...can't decide which looks nicer.
