Title: CHAIN FORK COMING....
Post by: bytemaster on November 10, 2013, 11:15:07 am
Due to the rapid increase in demand, we are increasing the rate at which difficulty can adjust from 4x every 4032 blocks to 32x every 4032 blocks.

If you are mining in my pool, you will automatically be upgraded to the fork.

New windows and mac binaries will be available for download shortly.

If you have any reasons why we shouldn't fork and would like to object you have about 2 hours to do so.

Edit:
ALL binaries are available at:

For those who don't know, the target spec was 5 minute intervals, but there is so much hash power that the effective interval is down to 15 seconds when you factor in orphans.    This change will retarget the chain to 5 minute intervals faster that it would under the current settings.

We are double checking it and will let you know when we deploy it.

It has already passed a reindex of the current chain.

Support!
I have been solo mining for 2 days, get none block, I think it might be the super power thing affect it.
Is it still possible for solo mining using i7 CPU after the new binary released?

Due to the rapid increase in demand, we are increasing the rate at which difficulty can adjust from 4x ever 4032 blocks to 32x every 4032 blocks.

When will this fork occur? If you are going to do a fork then you need to give pools times to fix software not 2 hours. You are charging a large fee so how do we know this isnt a ploy to control the network for several hours while the other pool owners are still asleep?

I am charging a 3% fee... so get your facts straight.

I have already talked with the other pools, they will be good to go.

pool? you think its a pool issue? i thought its an protocol.

And you know that someone on bitcointalk offered 1000 PTS 2 days ago,
while im mining 5 days and recieved 1.5 PTS?
i think you in same team as the guy with 1000 PTS after 3 days of mining. scammy types.

All my servers in total is avarage: 107 to 112.1 hpm
I get about 97PTS per day average.
Who ever has 1000 in two days were solo mining when it first started and got blocks.  That's now very difficult to achieve.  When I started, i got two block for 49 PTS x 2 in 3hrs.

So, my advise to you my friend...  READ MORE before you accuse people of scamming!!!!

Very risky move. If you look at how protocol changes in other altcoins have been handled, where has always been a grace period of at least a couple of days. This gives all miners the time needed to update to a newer version.

What is going to happen if you don't get the majority of miners to adopt the new protocol in time?

That said, I've updated my miners (300+ cores) to the new protocol version. Lets hope that we get through this smooth.

I have a pool with 3000 miners that has migrated and the other major pool has too.

Solo mining already takes a week so only 10% of the solo miners will be effected because the rest would not have found anything anyway.  If the difficulty adjusted as planned pre-fork, then only 2.5% of the solo miners will lose a block and with the orphan rate you would have to assume that only 1.25% of solo miners will lose.

On the other hand the fork gives these solo miners a chance to win more over the longer term rather than having it all go to early adopters who know how to spawn up VPS cloud mining.

i hope this community will get what it intended to get, but if it not get enough adoption its going in wrong centralized direction which is not what P2P currency mean.

My plan is to decentralize everything, so I am actively looking into decentralized mining pools.

That is not how this works. All solo miners with the old version of the miner can be seen together as one entity with a certain hash rate. It doesn't matter that some people are not getting any blocks, some will. And its not only miners who have to upgrade, also people who just use the software to make transactions.

This could be ugly:

The old miners will just make an 4x adjustment. They accept any blocks whether it be the ones generates with lower diff (4x increase) or higher diff (32x increase max).

The new miners reject blocks with lower diff (the ones with 4x adjustment), because these blocks don't match the new requirement. However they will produce blocks much slower than the old version of the miner, so many people using an older version of the software will make invalid transactions!

Thus: Any payments made with an older version of the client could get lost and someone falling for that could easily be scammed.

No, I think we'll see a clean fork -

        // Check proof of work
        if (nBits != GetNextWorkRequired(pindexPrev, this))
            return state.DoS(100, error("AcceptBlock() : incorrect proof of work"));

If nBits doesn't match the expected value, the block be rejected outright.

If nBits doesn't match the expected value, the block be rejected outright.

It is only rejected by all new miners. There is going to be a % of miners with the old version and a different nbits. They get a longer chain even if they don't represent 50% of the networks hashrate, because they miner 'easier' blocks than all loyal miners who switched to a newer version.

Anyone using the old version of the software, will accept this longer easier chain! If you make transactions without having the newest version installed, they will end up in the old block chain, but not necessarily in the new chain.

Someone can spend funds and make the receiver trick into believing he received his PTS (if the receiver uses the old software), where in reality he didn't get his funds because they ended up in the 4x-chain and not the shorter 32x-chain.

If you have any reasons why we shouldn't fork and would like to object you have about 2 hours to do so.

You must be kidding. You're trying to establish a serious business, and you give your loyal early adopters TWO HOURS before a hard fork????

There's already an active exchange! Have you given the slightest thought what happens there when people on different blockchain versions send or withdraw their PTS there?

I had high hopes for this coin. What you're showing here is a complete management failure, IMO. Good luck with that.

A couple simple questions....

First... I saw someone refer to pool mining.... How are you pool mining?  I downloaded QT and assumed I was solo mining.  Where are PTS poolminers and who has pool mining up and running.

Second... Whena and where wiil PTS shares be traded?

Third.. You are already increasing the difficulty ..... I have been mining with 3-4 PC's 2-7 threads for over 5 days and I am finding almost no blocks for last 3 days.  If you want to keep small miners, you need to be careful.  Someone has a large block of mining power and is producing almost all the coins.  Regardless.... mining for 3 days with no blocks and now increasing difficulty and now pool mining without notifying how to pool mine?  I am thinking PTS is becoming a 'scam' coin!

there are 3 pools - it's up to you to use them

also, it's only natural for the hashrate to grow.

Seems to be slowing down - looks like some hashing power has left. Are all the pools still up?

No release notes and no version number change? cmon...

I noticed Getmininginfo does not list hashespermin anymore, it now shows collisionspermin instead.
What else has changed?

Yep it was a rushed job... we are in the process of putting together a rollout checklist and testing procedures so we don't have to fly by the seat of our pants in the future.   With blocks flying every 20 seconds we had to act fast.

How can we as a community help?  Do you have a list of people to test new builds?  You have a lot of support here, don't be afraid to ask in these situations.

Added the downloads to a bittorrentsync share, if the download links not working and you have bittorrentsync:

I'll try to keep it up to date with the latest versions as well.

How can i check network hash?

The bot on IRC can calculate that
Code: [Select]
09:16:12       +sternburg | Protoshares Difficulty: 0.00012097, next change in 3885 blocks (2.17 weeks). Current blocktime: 5.64 minutes, Network hashrate: 92122 hashs/min.

Hey comal,

the source from github isn't linking at the moment, I have the same problem.
But even it you fetch an earlier version (which will compile fine) the client will crash. See this thread:

http://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=408.0
 (http://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=408.0)

@bytemaster I know there is much going on at the moment, but could you have a look at the thread above.

After the crashes the client fails to access the wallet files, which is kind of making me nervous.
