General Discussion / Common Questions about BitShares Answered
« on: December 22, 2013, 05:44:12 am »
I wrote a post on my blog, answering some of the common questions I encounter about BitShares and BitAssets. I might have missed some things or overlooked some points. Would appreciate the community's input. Also, if there are other questions that you have which I haven't addressed, please post them and I'll add to the post. I wanted to share the details and information about BitShares with all my readers.

General Discussion / Princeton Researcher on Prediction Markets
« on: November 30, 2013, 03:25:57 pm »
I am posting under BitShares section as I think it's most relevant, but if mods disagree, feel free to move it out of here.

Ref: https://freedom-to-tinker.com/blog/felten/bitcoin-research-in-princeton-cs/

It's interesting that several academics have taken an interest in prediction markets. This is the second such article I am reading within a week. Apparently, there is a wealth of scientific studies ready to be unleashed - they are just waiting for the right regulatory environment.

The prediction marketplace of BitShares is a little different from the prediction markets described here. These are similar to what InTrade was. Essentially, you buy shares in an 'Event', so say, "Bitcoin will trade above $2000 on MtGox at any moment on Dec 31st 2013". This is a well defined event which may or may not happen. People will 'bet' accordingly. It gets interesting where the predictive power is very good, e.g. Intrade's claim to fame was how it could predict the US election results to within a percentage point.

One main challenge is to this in a decentralized way. There shouldn't be a 'moderator' who will decide whether the said event took place or not. The so called 'Oracles' are a few years away at least, so that doesn't seem like an issue. Not sure how voting would work, i.e. how to incentivize people to vote the right way.

Also, is this something that should be incorporated into BitShares or a new DAC perhaps? Thoughts?

BitShares PTS / Wait what? 1% inflation?
« on: November 23, 2013, 11:23:16 pm »
This is from bter.com, the new PTS exchange:
" POW Hash: Momentum (2^26 / 2^50) with SHA512 Generation,Block target: 5 minutes, total coins: Around 2 million, with 1% inflation after 2 years "
1% inflation? Please tell me that's wrong and I haven't been living under a rock this last month. Putting in off-topic, don't want to raise false alarms or anything :D

Meta / Ability to view 'All pages'
« on: November 19, 2013, 02:25:26 am »
The forum seems to be missing the ability to view 'All' instead of going through page numbers individually. For longer discussions, it's a good feature I think. Bitcointalk forum has it, for example. Not sure if others agree it's a good feature to have.

General Discussion / [Scam] Ovchinnikov is a scammer, don't trade!
« on: November 18, 2013, 11:17:03 pm »
Can provide proof to the mods, please ban him or put a scammer tag in front of his id so others don't get cheated.
I sent him 0.6 BTC and he never sent the 50 PTS that we agreed upon.
Here's the hash of 0.6 BTC delivered to him: 4cc3d5d0334e4d7a48b7991262f9e5a92617572d98db7b085c12d10b6ca9eef2

He stopped replying to my PMs and he's online, so definitely a scammer. Be aware.

General Discussion / Pricing Differences without an Exchange
« on: November 17, 2013, 01:05:57 pm »
I think PTS has grown enough that major exchanges like Cryptsy and btc-e should include them. There's already a lot of pricing differences in the trades that occur. For instance, in the forum right now, people are buying at 0.02 whereas the last trades in this exchange - bter.com is around 0.01651. That's a 20% discount right there, which is fairly high in my opinion.
At least the Chinese exchanges seem smarter about this endeavor!

General Discussion / Some Clarity on Dividends
« on: November 16, 2013, 06:20:13 pm »
You've probably covered this before, but I need a little more clarity on the dividends aspect of BitShares.

1. If I hold just BitShares and DO NOT convert those to any BitAsset, will I still get dividends in BitShares?
2. If I hold BitAssets, will I get more dividends? Will the dividends be in BitShares or BitAssets?
3. If I short-sell BitAssets, will I immediately get the corresponding BitShares credited to my account (assume I hold enough collateral)? Will these be eligible to pay me dividends, assuming 1 is true?

Maybe I am blind, but I don't see a place to access sent messages. Is that deliberate?

Keyhotee / Connecting Keyhotee and Protoshares
« on: November 10, 2013, 09:16:30 pm »
I understand that Protoshares are meant to be a bet on the value of all future DACs created by Invictus. You have a one to one relationship between Protoshares and Bitshares when they are released, but what's the relation between Protoshares and Keyhotee, if any? I might be missing something here, but just wanted to ask and clarify.

BitShares PTS / Wallet Balance 'Immature'?
« on: November 06, 2013, 12:16:54 pm »
This confuses me. I left my computer mining all night, and in addition to the balance and unconfirmed, I have a place for
Immature: 150 PTS
However, when I go to the transactions tab, there are two entries with 50 PTS each of type Mined. They aren't confirmed and have a "?" to the left end. When I hover, it says 'Offline 3 confirmations. This block was not received by any other nodes and will probably not be accepted!'

What exactly does this mean? I don't suppose there was any forking, was there?

General Discussion / Gauging Trading Interest in Different Cryptocurrencies
« on: November 05, 2013, 12:24:35 pm »
It is too early for an exchange to pick up PTS, but I want to gauge the interest in what kind of trading you'll do or like to do with your PTS, buying and selling. Please vote for the currencies that you think you'll pair up with PTS.
Poll allows two votes per user.
