General Discussion / Re: What is backing the USD?
« on: September 09, 2014, 05:30:52 pm »
Side question: In the US is everyone FORCED to accept the USD? I know you can accept other money but do you have to accept USD?

Legal Tender Status

"I thought that United States currency was legal tender for all debts. Some businesses or governmental agencies say that they will only accept checks, money orders or credit cards as payment, and others will only accept currency notes in denominations of $20 or smaller. Isn't this illegal?

The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, entitled "Legal tender," which states: "United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues."

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise...."

Seems like you don't have to.

I don't understand the whole buzz with shatoshi... does these news affect the BTC price now? Why it is so important to know who shatoshi is? why would it be dangerous if people knew his identity more than any other known rich man on the planet? why does it matter if he moves his original funds anyway?

the only thing that would matter is to know if he is dead or alive so in case he is dead and no one has access to his funds, bitcoin supply would be reduced (dividends in the bitcoin network)...other than that i really don't understand why this is so important..

Imagine why it is importand by this examples:

Satoshi is:

1. the NSA
2. Bill Gates
3. The Pope
4. Bytemaster
5. Me
6. Rothchild
7. Rockefeller

...would it be the same undepended of which one they are?
I think a lot of people want to know for the reason you mention, basically to try and determine their motivations...but the more I think about it the more I conclude that it doesn't matter.  It is what it is and can be used for good or ill like many technologies/innovations.  We just need to be vigilant about how it's used.  Cat is out of the bag already.

that is one big thread that btsx will not face .. BM is well known .. no secrets (not even market updates :) )
nothing 'shady' +5%
...I think when Bitshares has a high enough market cap there will be quite a bit of danger which BM could face ...

I agree with this.  Funny you mention it.  I have been thinking about sending him a pm about this...but I'm sure he knows.  I might anyway...so I will sleep better.

General Discussion / Re: TimeShares DAC

This has given me an idea.  I may create a DAC called MonthShares.  It will be denominated in months. If you have 24, the wallet will show 2 years.  The purpose of the DAC is to let people trade, ah, months of time...something like that...still working on the details...will update soon.

I made a short at the top of the book, 26.75 which was above median and average price.  The short showed up in the GUI order list confirming it is OK price-feed-wise.

Then I made a bid for the same quantity at price of 26.7501.  The bid did not execute.  Why?

Same here.  I bid the EXACT price of my short when it was at the top of the sell orders and it sat their more than 5 10 minutes.  This is not a different price with a different ending nonvisible decimal point.  The prices were the same.

I am not clear on what the issue is?

Thirst 3 short orders in per GUI does not really exist (and subsequently do not show in Console).

What is the price & quantity?

I've had issues with orders not matching even when I had the top orders on both the Ask/Short and Bid side for the same amount.  Either there are bugs in this order matching or I don't know how it works in which case the GUI needs to be updated so that it visually makes sense because it's frustrating and you eventually give up because you don't believe your order will be executed.

If the top Ask/Short has a short order for 27.1 and the top Bid is 27.1, shouldn't they be matched?
they will match .. unless they differ in the last decimal .. which is (for what ever reason) not displayed correctly in the gui (that bug sucks!)

@tonky: sorry .. missed that .. I will send cass a link he should know who can fix that I guess

Yes, it does.  :(

General Discussion / Re: BTSX Market GUI cosmetics

At the moment it doesn't seem obvious besides looking at the median feed as to whether the price BitUSD is trading is below 1-1.

Personally I go over to coinmarketcap look at the USD price of BTSX and divide by 1 to get the current number and then from there I've still go to work out what the current trading price is in relation to that.

Is there an easier way to do it, I've only bought a few token BitUSD's for fun so far, so I don't know?

I'd find it easier to at least see where BitUSD is trading even in visual terms to the median/1hr average price.

Say for example if the median/1hr avg price is 32.5 BTSX to $1

                                    30.8           31.7          32.5          33.3           34.1

                                      .95    .96    .97    .98    .99    1    .01    .02    .03    .04    .05

Or when you're buying it says:       32   (.984)

Something like that would be much easier to tell you're getting BitUSD at a discount and by how much and perhaps help the range be tighter?

10-4.  That's what I do.  Agree.

I would like to leverage these infographics when they are done and use on my site.  Is their a central repository for them ?

Hey did you noticed this here?

Hey cass thanks for posting this, I haven't seen it. The design is nice but I'm not a fan of the 5% interest it advertises. It's not the right hook for the demographic BTSX should be targeting. My infographic is meant to capture the interest of an experienced trader. I think that's really who we appeal most to. Traders will understand the value proposition BTSX offers.

Great work on these infographics, all involved.  I think we can and should appeal to multiple markets  and probably want different marketing material for each.  Not sure about the order though, maybe the Trader should be the first target until everything has been tested more and it's a bit easier for the casual/mass user to use but we shouldn't abandon that huge market and can work-up marketing material for both.  These can then be leveraged for website(s)/blogs/email etc...

The 5% interest (or whatever it is) would be great if and when we could include screenshots of an account with the interest shown, maybe circled in red or some such way to highlight it.
