That's an issue with the entire approach, given it's based in consequentialism.  Unless he argues that he is guided by an objective and superior value system, the whole argument boils down to taking away people's freedom simply because he wants to. If all value is truly subjective, it's hard to point to any problem with that.

For that we have his other FAQ.

It's not consequentialism itself I have a problem with.  I accept consequentialism as a general framework capable of supporting basically any other moral system inside it depending on the standard of value used within it.

The problem I often have with consequentialists is that they often seem to assume they have a complete understanding of all potential value and disregard the possibility of unintended consequences in their pursuit of it.

So I was able to add @Frodo.  Trying to add @fluxer555 failed.  Not sure about the others listed above yet.

This software definitely looks interesting.  Secure messaging, forums, and file transfers all in one place.  What's not to like?

I noticed on the Electronic Frontier Foundation's secure messaging scorecard that the only flaw for retroshare was that there hadn't been a recent code audit.  @Troglodactyl, do you know if there is a plan for an independent review of the code in the near future?

I can ask, but I don't know of any immediate plans for audits.  The software is usable, and is very likely pretty secure, but I think it should still be considered open beta, so probably best not use it for any secrets that would get people killed if they got out just yet.  If we can get over the "not developed here" factor, I think it would be wise to support development of this project just as we would support Keyhotee were it still on the table.  Our current developers just don't have the bandwidth to build a competing communication and social platform with everything else on their plates, and RetroShare has several very dedicated developers who have been working on it for long time.  With our encouragement and resources, I think we can get security audits and BitShares integration plugins done once our community wants them.

I can't figure out how to add a location.

Close RetroShare and reopen it.  From the login screen click "manage profiles and locations", and then select the profile you created, enter a location, move the mouse, and generate the new location.

EDIT: Looks like you got that figured out.

Thanks for joining!  This is showing as an incomplete certificate.  It looks like the location is missing.  The location is just a unique identifier for each system you run RetroShare on to support friend discovery and connection.

Section 3 of the article on irrational choices is an illogical argument IMO. The author identifies that in certain situations people make predictably irrational choices. The example he gives is inaction often reflects a lack of mental energy applied to the problem rather than a preference. While this is true, it only justifies changing how the choices are arranged or presented for individuals, rather than constraining those choices. Second irrationality is most often subjective. Taking away the choice considered irrational by a majority, academics or some bureaucracy would harm those for whom that is a clear and purposeful preference that benefits them.
That's an issue with the entire approach, given it's based in consequentialism.  Unless he argues that he is guided by an objective and superior value system, the whole argument boils down to taking away people's freedom simply because he wants to. Like Kickstarter, or the Free State Project.

Although BitShares development is progressing beautifully, the advanced communication features envisioned for Keyhotee have faded out of focus.  I would like to encourage renewed efforts to in that area, starting with BitShares community user acceptance testing of the RetroShare project.  RetroShare already supports decentralized and encrypted IM, mail, forums, VOIP, and file sharing.  If these features function at scale to the satisfaction of this community, or show sufficient promise, I recommend that we reach out to the RetroShare development team as a community to cooperate with them, and consider offering funding for their development and integration with BitShares.

If you'd like to participate in testing, the software is here: http://retroshare.sourceforge.net/index.html

Please post your RetroShare public key below, and add mine and those of any other participants.  The process for adding contacts in RetroShare is unfortunate, but if we integrate this should eventually be solved by TITAN.

Adding a secure communication network to BitShares' robust financial system could be a massive step.

EDIT: Renamed topic for those who weren't here for the original Keyhotee dream...

The second part of the quotation ("I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies...") may well be a paraphrase of a statement Jefferson made in a letter to John Taylor in 1816. He wrote, "And I sincerely believe, with you, that banking establishments are more dangerous than standing armies; and that the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale."

Linux Mint 17.1 64bit

Mostly looks good so far.

It crashed when I filled an order shorting to myself.  I refused its request to reset the db on relaunch and shorted to myself again and it crashed again.  Relaunched and refused to reset again, and all the orders look like they went through fine.

The open margin orders list shows my call prices at 2x the feed price at entry, while the help text seems to indicate it should be 1.5x.

Allow hierarchical user-issued asset symbols to be longer than 8 characters

What are 'hierarchical user-issued assets'?

I would assume it mirrors the account naming system, so the issuer of an asset can issue sub-assets.

Seems like unnecessary complexity and uncertainty.

This is a bad idea, because if it was a good idea it would be profitable for anyone to do and thus there would be no need for it.

Any chance of a mixup between different backups secured with different passwords?  Have you tried both passwords?

I suggest making extra backups of your wallet folder and the .json backups just to be sure since you're doing troubleshooting as a guard against frustration induced carelessness.

It sounds like you want him to be a vocal adopter, which isn't necessarily a paid position.  As an economist, he should be able to see the value clearly enough anyway.

I could see hiring him to do a video series, or for consulting with the devs, or something like that, but just hiring people to sit on the delegate list as some kind of mascots seems like a stretch.
