IDentabit / Re: Important Criticism

My sense is that there's not a great likelihood IDentabit will work well as a name for this purpose.  So here are my entries for an alternative.

Solara (so-lah-ra)
currency: solar (so-lahr) or sol

Spectrum or Spectra

General Discussion / Re: Maker sharedrop on the BitShares community

I know that some here trade in and out of BTS.  But personally I haven't sold a single share since I began accumulating in May.  And although I've gained enough of a comfort level with the current web wallet to keep a good portion of my holdings in it, I feel that I have no choice but to also keep a not-so-insignificant amount of BTS on the exchanges.  At least until 2.0.  In the interim, I am fine with share drop not being announced.  I just think people need to know which exchanges honor share drops and which might not.

I assume CCEDK would do so.  I seem to recall hearing Poloniex has been good on this front as well.  What about Bittrex and BTC38?  I won't even ask about BTER since anyone with BTS there is just asking to lose it!

It clearly IS competing against BTS as a sharedrop target and against BTS market value.

Actually there is one argument AGAINST using BTS as sharedrop target no-one brought up yet:
If you can recall PTS prices, what exactly happened after 28th of february last year?
BTS(X) market cap was effectively taken out of the PTS market cap at the time of the snapshot and the priced tanked big time.
Because BTS are used as collateral, this may result in ... you guess it .. a black swan (of course only if the airdropping market cap is large vs. BTS's market cap)

Also, IMHO, the goal of a snapshot is NOT to drive the price up (because it will go down again eventually) .... but to honor a community.

In my opinion, snapshots nowadays only make sense if you do them without further notice .. that way you
* do not drive price up
* prevent a price tanking at the time of the snapshot
* while you are still able to drop on your valuable demographic

Just my thoughts ..

I guess having the possibility of a snapshot that could occur at any time would encourage folks not to leave their BTS on some external exchange and not to sell BTS even temporarily just to fool around promiscuously with other coins...

I tend to agree with rewarding the hodlers by just doing the drop and then announcing it's done.  My only concern is for those who have BTS on the exchanges.  Do we know all of the main exchanges can/will handle a sharedrop (aside from perhaps BTER)?

Has there been any word as to around when the snapshot is expected to take place?

It could be announced with some advance warning like we have done in the past, but we really like xeroc's ideas about announcing it at some point AFTER it has occurred.  This would minimize any "black swan" impact to the chain from people pumping then dumping around a pre-announced snapshot date.  It would also have the effect of encouraging people to HODL their shares for a long-term probability of a snapshot, not just buying in just in time to collect.  This rewards HODLers which is not a bad idea.

Here's what xeroc recently posted:

^^ THIS! but mainly because of what I stated in my previous post.

Does this work on the Blackberry?
Isn't it true that you can adapt the android apps for use on blackberry?

Yes i know, i'm one of the few people on earth to have not made the switch to the iphone.
I haven been praying for the last years for someone to put BB out of his misery. [emoji5]

Unfortunatly there is no BB version, anyway i will take a look.

No need to code for Blackberry.  All modern Blackberry phones (running bb10.2+) can run Android apps.  If the Blackberry user is tech savvy, they can sideload .apk files.  But as the app author, you can also submit the app to Amazon Appstore so any Blackberry 10.2+ phone user can easily install without having to sideload.

Which brings me back to...why not here? Or on both chains...or on your own DPOS Ethereum chain? :)

So the important thing to understand is that we didn't choose Ethereum, we chose the EVM. Ethereum is just the first blockchain implementing the EVM, and implementing it is something many blockchains could potentially do in the future, with huge benefits such as being sidechains with each other by default. Right now I know if at least 2 other public blockchains that will be supporting the EVM, and Maker will be able to move part of itself and all of its assets onto these blockchains as well, existing simultaneously on every EVM chain.

There are two main reasons for choosing the EVM 1) it is easier and more efficient to build custom applications like Maker there than in any other way (due to the insanely good solidity scripting language). 2) It is easier to integrate with, and provide financing to, other DAO and dapps that reside in the same ecosystem.

Bitshares is more specialized for providing specific, hardcoded and very efficient products like bitUSD whereas the EVM is a general purpose protocol that can exist on multiple blockchains. Perhaps at some point bitshares might implement it as well, but I have no real idea about the feasibility of this.

Can you say what public blockchains are looking to implement EVM that you know of so far?

@Bytemaster, would you mind speaking to the feasibility of implementing EVM into Bitshares sometime down the road and whether that could fit into your vision?  Thanks.

Side fact: BTS has 393,395,829 BTS UNCLAIMED right now .. why sharedrop those?

That's a lot of BTS.  Can you explain what "unclaimed" means, exactly.  Thanks.

Thanks for answering.  When you say "brain key", are you referring to the password?  Or the recovery key?  Also, if one loses the recovery key but still has the password and can log into the wallet, are they able to generate a new recovery key?  Thanks again for your help.
brain key = recovery key
If you can access your wallet, then you can go to the advanced tab and recover your recovery key .. do this NOW!

Done.  My recovery key is now safe and sound.  Thank you!  So does this now absolutely ensure that I'll be able to access any accounts/funds in this wallet after 2.0 is released?  I don't need to save a backup of the wallet itself or anything?

By the way, the wallet says my account name is "Not registered on the blockchain".  When I click on "Register tbone", it pops up a dialog box indicating a transaction fee of 1BTS and shows a dropdown with the available accounts.  I select the one I want to pay with (which is listed as tbone) and click the "Register" button but nothing happens.  Any idea why this is happening or how I might otherwise go about registering my account name?  Thanks again!

Is it unstable?  Is it not secure?  What functionality does it lack?  And lastly, will balances in this web wallet transfer over to 2.0?  Thanks in advance.
Can someone knowledgeable please answer these questions about the current web wallet?  Thanks.
IMHO the only motivation to tag it "experimental" is that there are no unit-tests to make sure EVERYTHING works as expected. I would consider it secure assuming your computer is secured :)
I am pretty sure that you will be able to import the "brain key" into 2.0 easily.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I don't understand why this conversation is taking place considering a) there is currently an end-user web wallet available,

I assume you mean this: https://wallet.bitshares.org/

From the website, it looks like it might only be experimental but I'll check it out. Thanks for mentioning it. I wasn't aware of it.

Yes, that is what I was referring to.  It works fine for me, at least for transferring balances.  But perhaps we can find out from one of the devs why it's considered "experimental".  Is it unstable?  Is it not secure?  What functionality does it lack?  And lastly, will balances in this web wallet transfer over to 2.0?  Thanks in advance.

@tbone I'm reuploading another copy. No clue why that one is still processing. I'll post new link when ready, sorry.

Edited version is ready : https://soundcloud.com/tuck-fheman/beyond-bitcoin-bonus-hangout-on-qora-with-vrontis-july-25th-2015

Great, thanks!

Is the recording of this hangout going to be available anytime soon?  Eager to hear it.  If editing is holding it up, perhaps a raw version can be posted in the meantime?  Would certainly be appreciated.

@tbone Posting my raw copy to soundcloud, will link it here when done.

Needs a few minutes to process. skip the first 5 minutes or so when everyone was confused. ;)

@Buck Fankers - Thanks, but for some reason that link is not working.  Is it possible the file is still uploading?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I don't understand why this conversation is taking place considering a) there is currently an end-user web wallet available, b) Bitshares 2.0 will launch with a new web wallet, and c)  Bitshares 2.0 will offer incentives for 3rd parties to create additional end-user wallets with their own value adds, and we know that Bitsapphire among others have already made headway along these lines.

With these things in mind, it seems to make perfect sense to commit all remaining resources to finishing off the 2.0 back-end infrastructure ASAP.  Please feel free to enlighten me if I'm missing something, but making an issue out of end-user wallet availability seems like either being negative for the sake of being negative, or just short-sighted.  Where am I going wrong here?

Here are a few that seem to be doing some interesting things (in no particular order):

Crypti, Qora, IOCoin, SuperNET, NEM, Horizon, NXT, Burst

Can anyone speak about how other platforms like these can actually be integrated with Bitshares?  I understand they can utilize the Bitshares blockchain instead of their own by issuing a UIA for their own currency.  But most (if not all) of those listed above are more than just a coin.  So what about the functionalities they are building?  Would their devs need to become Bitshares devs and port their functionality over?
