Yea my server got on a fork and stopped syncing right after I went to bed, sorry about the false alarm!

And is the delegate participation # the best way to tell if you are on a fork ?

I guess he lost all connections on the fork and had to restart the client to reconnect and sync to the (by-then) longer chain

Yes it is!
Indeed, in general it's enough to just restart the client, if that doesn't do it restarting with --rebuild-index probably will.
