Technical Support / Delegate voting
« on: September 23, 2014, 09:24:23 pm »
I just put the bulk of my funds into cold storage and I noticed the delegate voting options during the transfer.

Not yet being satisfied I am informed enough to individually select delegates (let alone 101 of them!), I went ahead and selected the "let delegates decide" option (or something like that. I still get the msg "this account is not voting with all of it's stake" tho).

In my mind there's a rather big hole in our DPOS implementation that needs to be filled and that's in setting up some basic standards or guidelines for delegates and providing a central place where that info can be published. Even basic info like hardware description, ISP, UPS and the like for each delegate would be better than nothing.

I wouldn't want to lock in a set of requirements, but having a basic checklist of guidelines each delegate could publish would give people a metric to compare delegates. Another set of criteria would be operational information and run-time stats, like svk publishes on his BitsharesBlocks.com website.

These things may have been discussed, but I haven't found such discussions if so. I'm also aware this probably isn't on the top of the priority pile, but it probably needs to be addressed before going live to general public in a big way.

It seems like every day I see web designs on the internet that look outstanding, and makes me feel like my efforts are neanderthal in comparison. But I could throw up a Joomla site with some generalized info pages about delegate voting, and a forum, guestbook or some way to for delegates to post the essentials of their "campaign platform" for the general public. Maybe even putting up polls to gauge what the BitShare community considered to be important in a delegate might provide useful input. Hell I dunno. Anyway, this may not even be worth 2 shatoshis to this community, but it's a thought that crossed my mind.

Thanks Mysto, that may be why nobody else has responded to this question, they're all busy trying to diagnose / fix the problem.

I've only gotten the bitshares client binaries from bitshares-x.info/#, but is there a better place to get them?

Reason I'm asking is I'm running version 0.4.16 and it's telling me there is a "mandatory" upgrade available, but that's what's on the download page. I haven't yet seen the "check for updates" menu selection ever work either.

The client has 9 network connections and it says the "last block was synced 1h 59m 47s ago", counted down from 9 hrs or so. It's been in that state now for going on 5 minutes. Is this normal, due to an old client version or some other problem?

Upgrading the protocol is easy if the community understands why it is being done and agrees with it, and/or trusts the lead developers. The lead developers simply update the software and users upgrade. Its no big deal.

Also, updates include checkpoint ids which deal with forks.

No offense, but that sounds dismissive. An earlier post indicted the problems that occurred with Bitcoin in 2013 when some of the clients didn't upgrade, thus making it difficult to integrate the pre / post fork chains to ensure a trustworthy bitcoin network. It became a big deal for Bitcoin when everyone didn't upgrade. Is that scenario also possible with BitShares and if not why not? How is it different?

Technical Support / Re: Make an old account a sub-account of a new account?
« on: September 23, 2014, 03:28:14 pm »
But you can still have the two accounts related as FulI suggested if that's what he wants to do. This is pretty much the scenario you & I were discussing in last night's PMs, except I am not interested in becoming a delegate, at least not now.

But FulI's question is still unanswered. If the current, registered  delegate account is delg, creating and registering a new account named nodelg.delg would make the current delg account the "root". That is actually backwards from what FulI asked for, which is to make the delg account the subaccount, like delg.newName. That I don't know how to do or if that's even possible.

If it is, then riverhead can explain how to do it and if desired have the two accounts (however they're related) live in separate wallets. That's what our PM was about.

If they've got plenty of time, not sure who would think it's worth it. I'm only a newbie at BTT with 8 posts, and it throttles posts down to 1 every 6 minutes so I can't even get to 10 without a little effort. OK, time to post something there again...

It takes 30 posts to get out of newbie position to Jr. member, so I won't be voting there anytime soon.

You seem to ask the right questions and get things fast! With a bit of reading about why Bitcoin works in general and why DPOS works more efficiently and what DACs are and why the "Bitcoin as a company" analogy makes sense you can see quickly so that most of the ppl on BTT talk all day without understanding anything about Bitcoin.

Thanks for the compliment delulo, I'm giving it alot of energy & focus right now. Glad it's apparent to other people  +5%

Overall it makes sense to centralize certain parts because it has to be centralized to be regulated.

Isn't one of the MAIN points NOT to be regulated but let the market set the rules?

Thx gamey  +5%

When that page refers to terminal client it must mean Linux. The BitSharesX windows client doesn't install any such cmd line tools. However, the same commands could be executed in the console, presumably.

Technical Support / Cold storage methodologies
« on: September 21, 2014, 07:26:51 pm »
As I gain more cryptocurrency understanding and presence on the net, I have established various accounts, wallets and balances here and there. However, I wish to protect my primary holdings in cold storage, which as I understand it is having a wallet whose primary keys and access passwords are not online.

My question is, what is the best way to go about this for BTC and BTSX?

My thought is to create a new virtual machine using Parallels or Virtualbox, install brand new wallets in it, transfer whatever primary balances I want in cold storage to the new wallets leaving whatever online balance in place in my existing wallets. Once the transfer is confirmed to the new wallets I would copy or image the partition the VM was on onto a removable USB drive and then securely wipe that partition.

Anyone care to comment on this approach or suggest others?

Yeah, I understand now. It does clutter up the forum to have such threads peppered all over the place.

Doh! I get it now. Sorry for the silly question. This is the place to see where evangelism and education is needed on the net, not a central place on this forum to laugh at stupid arguments you see elsewhere.
