Title: Engage Alternative Crypto Currency Board at bitcointalk?
Post by: bytemaster on July 22, 2014, 03:39:13 pm
I have a wild idea that would require some cooperation / coordination on this board:

1) We move all BTSX talk for one week over to bitcointalk.org with threads titled [BitShares X] - Real Topic...
2) Any posts here are ignored (for one week) except for a request to repost over on bitcointalk.org

With the volume of posts going on here every day people will not be able to ignore it and we will get a lot of new people joining the discussion.

Keep things limited to just a few threads.  The goal is to be respectful of their forum, but have our discussions in a place where others can see them and join in.   This is not an attempt to spam.   Just moving where we hang out and doing the same thing as all other alt-coins on their forum.

Note:  I think we should do it after the next bug fix release of the wallet.

Is it possible to attempt an automatic synchronization?
Like a tool to which everyone can provide 2 usernames and it synchronizes that user's posts?
The tool should work on each user's computer and will let the user use whatever forum he wants.

 +5% I think that's a great idea.

I would only have 2-3 main threads though.

Too many threads comes across 'spammy' but 2/3 threads that have loads of BitShares enthusiasts will make a huge different to the general perception imo.

I can build the binaries, I just don't know how to package them.  They don't seem to work unless the file structure is intact.

lol this is a terrible idea, any time you try to onboard people by "taking over" something that is theirs and not yours is probably not going to net you the result you want.

Also, it looks REALLY bad that you are the one suggesting this bad idea.

Seriously.

Yes, "taking over" was a poor/controversial phrase. But just forget that slip and think of it as getting our message out in the appropriate place/thread on another forum.

I think there's a fine between trying to bring some of the discussion over there, and outright spamming them with our propaganda.

I approve of the first idea, which is what I think bytemaster is aiming at, and disapprove of the second.

It's a credit that this community is big enough to sustain discussion on it's own, but it also isolates us from the rest of the world.

I mean the "Alternative Cryptocurrency" sub-forums exists. We should use it.

EDIT: rereading the OP, I take that back. I think it would be a better idea only to move a few of the important discussions over there.

I think we could boil it down to one or two threads... all help / tech support questions should be fielded over there.  Idea is to have a justified bump on a regular basis that keeps us at the top.

Poor choice of words perhaps.  Would you agree that our marketing presence on forums has been weak and making the effort to have a bigger presence on BTT through a few main threads would be positive though? (In the alternative cryptocurrency section obviously; we wouldn't be trying to discuss BitShares in any Bitcoin sections.)

adamblevine...please unblock me so I can send you a kind word of advice.

I have not blocked you over your past indescretions and would hope you not take things so personally as to cut off private avenues of idea exchange--this is about something far bigger than little disagreements between people trying to help.

With that said,

Since I cannot send this to you privately, I am forced to post it here:

lol this is a terrible idea, any time you try to onboard people by "taking over" something that is theirs and not yours is probably not going to net you the result you want.

Also, it looks REALLY bad that you are the one suggesting this bad idea.

Seriously.

Isn't this something that could have been sent directly to bm in a pm?  when you do this, you risk causing chaos (like it or not)...as should be apparent from the past.  If that is what you are trying to do, then by all means do it.  Otherwise, probably best to keep it professional and courteous.  Even better to offer real alternatives as opposed to what could be perceived by many in the community as unneeded and unproductive bashing.

we could very easily put down projects you are working on based on perceived unfairness/flaws in execution...but we don't and certainly do not do so publicly.  Please consider these words as I am really trying to offer advice to help heal things.

*Really wish this could have been sent via pm*

Yeah I really think this is a great idea.

I was a bit frustrated with marketing earlier today, given BTSX  trading so much below donating price,  but everything you want for marketing is actually there. I think Brian & others have done a great job. BitShares-X.info is looking ice cool. Great videos, Good Youtube & Facebook. Hugely popular forum. BitShares.org and DACsunlimited also good.

This is the only thing we missed, which is what everyone else does, is making the effort to create that presence on BTT. (& perhaps Reddit too.) So making the effort to specifically divert traffic there is important.

What do people think about doing a '(BTSX) BitShares X - Official Thread' as the main one started by one of the devs? (That seems to be the kind of format guys like NXT for example use.)

What other threads should there be?

Also do people think we should be on alternate cryptocurrencies  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=67.0 or Alternate Cryptocurrencies sub section announcements https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=159.0

To me it makes sense to be on the first, but the announcement one does seem to move at a mile a minute, so much traffic there.

Yes, a pub thread like the one NXT has is needed.

While we do not need to spam the bitcointalk board, there should be an official moderated thread.  They move fast in the alt section so a nice overview with graphics & video's should get people talking.

Now with the launch a small update would also be nice to see what is being worked on next.  Updated wallet?  Bug fixes?  New dry run to test market functionality?

and linux binaries? pretty pretty plz?

This is version 0.2.1 built on my Xubuntu system.  I deleted the data directory and build directory and was able to launch the client with nothing other than this executable sitting on my desktop, but it's possible that it requires one of the dependencies that were needed to build it, and it wont work on your system.

All standard warnings about downloading binaries off of the internet apply.  You're already on Linux, you really should just build it yourself.  I know I'm on the up and up, but you couldn't know that.  Anyways if you want it https://www.dropbox.com/s/p5bc0odmwg82upj/BitSharesX?n=58282092 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/p5bc0odmwg82upj/BitSharesX?n=58282092)

Also while I was moving this to my dropbox account I found an old video of the very puppies that inspired my choice in user name.  (I have a really hard time coming up with good names, so when I need to come up with a user name I tend to just look around the room and pick something.)  For your viewing pleasure

Also I am the suxxors at the dropbox, so if I've done something wrong, please let me know.

well thank you so much!

I've actually been trying to build it myself but failing hard. Linux is officially dumbass accessible now.

I really, really do appreciate the gesture, but I was kind of looking at BM or Dacsunlimited when I made that comment.

What distro are you on,  and where is it failing?

part of it is probably my own fault for being too stubborn to upgrade. someone was reassuring me that if I upgrade nothing changes, but I've broken stuff upgrading before, and having to spend a day setting everything up just so so and download everything again would be soul crushing for me right now. I just really like 12.04 so far it's been great to me (other than this hiccup), and it's still supported until 2017.

of course my bad upgrade experiences are from the days when the ubuntu versions were still single digits. maybe it's gotten better.

I've been halfass trying to get it to work in a virtualbox too (but haven't been trying as hard because I dislike that solution)-- haven't implemented the tips in the second topic linked below yet though, but my gut tells me it'd work if I went and did that, but I'm not in a giant hurry until BTER allows withdrawals anyway.

https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=5770

I gave it another crack last night, using some of the instructions I discovered in this thread (https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=5951.0), and now its giving me a different error and not even letting the compile start anymore. something about qt5 not finding curses... I could probably reproduce that for you if you want, but I'd need a few minutes.

i dont wanna upgrade and dont wanna use a virtualbox, so maybe I deserve this and should stop whining :P

EDIT: also I was just using "cmake ." so when I got it to start compiling it probably wasn't even thinking about the qt wallet. when qt5 barked about curses was the first time I tried compiling it with DINCLUDE_QT_WALLET=on flag

I am quite the opposite.   I change operating systems quite often.   I never customize things more than absolutely necessary.

I know you want to stay away from virtualbox, but if you can be swayed I got the wallet working in a great little distro called whonix.  It's actually two virtual machines and it routes everything through tor in a very interesting way.

Edit.   I Kinda want to run that in a virtual box running inside of a freebsd box.  Just cause I'm a nerd.

whonix eh? well tor is kind of pointless because I've already revealed my real world identity here. but that distro sounds intriguing, is it better than tails?

If I take another crack at installing in 14.04 in a virtualbox do you care if I send u a PM?

is there some reason you think it would be easier going on whonix? think it would be much harder if I tried Lubuntu in a vb instead of ubuntu?

Post by: puppies on July 23, 2014, 04:46:54 am
only mention it because it was the first and only reason I have ever felt like using virtualbox was a good idea.  I had some bad experiences with virtual machines when they were kinda new, and that soured me somewhat.  Its not amnesiac like tails is, and thats both better and worse.  It uses two virtual boxes to simulate a physical proxy, so even if your machine is compromised it can't leak any information about you.

I can't imagine there would be much of a difference between lubuntu and ubuntu.  Its just a lxde vs gnome right?  Feel free to PM me.  I'm by no means a nix expert, but I like playing with things and figuring out how to make them work.

I just read that second thread you linked, and while it seems like it should work, it also seems like a pain in the ass.  I use the https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=6008.msg80548#msg80548 approach.  Maybe its just me, but it seems like less of a pain in the ass.  Would love to hear if it works for others.

great idea, btsx will not succeed unless you do this. it does not matter how good btsx is if people don't know about it. this should have been done long ago but requires lots of time debating some very smart people mixed with lots of trolls. you need people over there who really know what they are talking about and can clearly yet technically explain why btsx is better than the competition.

hey hey hey, this guy speaks truth.  What an idea !

Seriously though, creating a single thread or possibly 2 for support questions etc is pretty standard on bitcointalk.

Should the thread be moderated?  Or have 1 thread for both moderated and unmoderated.  (Reasonable, alleviates concerns of censorship)

For moderation you might need a more senior account.  I'm not sure how it works.

This place has become a mess trying to sort through it all.   http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/BitShares_X_Solutions (http://wiki.bitshares.org/index.php/BitShares_X_Solutions) is an attempt at created a quasi-FAQ out the known solutions.  It doesn't begin to touch on all the 'wait for the next release' answers.
