Title: BitShares REloaded Site is up! The New BitShares.org Check it out!
Post by: MktDirector on November 20, 2014, 02:19:31 am
Hey everyone!

After being head down and off grid for a bit, working with Cass - over a LOT of hours, I'm happy to say BitShares.org (REloaded!) As Stan likes to say, is up!  The new site is simpler, more focused on our core business, more elegant and easy to understand.  I hope you like it.

And can I just go on the record here and say Cass is not only the hardest working person I know, he's also a brilliant artist and the designer behind what you see.  He also overcome some incredibly difficult personal situations to get this job done fast and at great sacrifice.  So THANK YOU CASS! THANK YOU.

Thank you to bytemaster for sitting through long sessions with the marketing guys to continually drill down to answer the question, What IS BitShares? as I asked over and over and over and to the devs who all pitched in ideas up in VA. Thank you guys.  We have a lot more to do, but this site is the first glimpse of a newer, leaner, meaner, more relevant and purposeful BitShares.

Please feel free to point out edits or anything we may have overlooked.  And please offer (constructive) criticism, we'd really appreciate it.  The site will be filled out more over the next few weeks with more pages, it's not yet fully complete, but the core of it is there.   Enjoy!

B

This is more awesome if it has a daily news updates page so we don't have to dig the forum on what's latest news.

Wow that site is slick! Great Job!

...constructive criticism: I wish one of the main menu options at the top right was something like "how it works," or "more info." I say this because after reading the home page I felt excited and interested to learn more, but it was not intuitive where to go to do so.

And I shouldn't have to go to the wiki for more info. It should be on the site, one of the main and obvious navigation choices. I say this because I think many people will want to learn more before going ahead. A resource that almost everyone visiting the site is using should be one of the main sections of the site, not a peripheral wiki link.

That's all. It REALLY is great looking though. Very impressive, especially for not being finished.

Great to see something tangible. Thank you Brian, Cass and Team.

Constructive Criticism: Not formatted well in Chrome on an iPhone. The Mobile and Desktop versions are both cropped.

Good to see you on the forum this late in the day MktDirector, sign up to the forum on nullstreet so you can gain marketing insight if you have not already.

Come join the forum more often and post, if people are negative to you, to hell with them, but still take what they say into consideration.

Looks good overall; the slick backgrounds and simple messages really do justice to BitShares.

If I have one criticism, it's that the readability of text can be improved on many of the pages. In some cases, the text color is too close to the background colors, making the words almost invisible. In other cases, the font seems too thin and insubstantial.

Great stuff.

Small nitpick- MAC is not an acronym. Please change this to 'Mac', or better yet 'Mac OSX' or simply 'OSX' on the download page.

The site looks phenomenal cass + Brian, great work! The way the features are explained will definitely have people wanting to know more about what this technology is and how it works.

My suggested improvement is to standardize the team page a bit more. For example, there are a bunch of similar roles with similar titles (software, software engineer, software developer, developer) which could all be standardized into just one title. Also, I think it would be a nice touch to have each team member write up a short bio and add it to that page somehow. Maybe clicking on a team member image will cause a short bio to pop up in a modal or something. Also, should HackFisher be mentioned as the project lead for Play to remain consistent with the Music guys?

Nice site..

http://bitshares.org/merchants/

The as featured in should contain links to those features otherwise casual readers are left wondering if those were put in just to get free marketing and may not be true...

Agreed. Mac is a model of a PC. OSX is the OS. Especially now that people run OSX on home builts and Linux/Windows on their Macs.

I cant read this page on my ipad the font is too light.. Should be a high comtast color for large bodies of text

http://bitshares.org/regulation-proof-self-funding-dacs/
Should also not refer to btsx anymore i got confused when talking about delegate pay rate of btsx vs variable rate of bts.. Just talk about bts only and variable pay rate

You should also link yhings like when mentioning bitshares music

Using my laptop, on the first page(?) of the site, I cannot see the top-left hand side  menu/links; .
Well I kind  of can, but I have to wait for the dark haired guys to pass through...

Not complaining, just saying to keep it in mind.

Great work. Very cool site! Nitpick: In INSTANT section, "it's time you looked at BitShares Banking."

Isn't this the kind of "bank" language we were trying to avoid with the slogan? How about "It's time to bank on BitShares." That triggers a different definition of the word "bank" which does not identify it as a highly regulated institution.

Overall, excellent site.

The bank language caught my attention as well. Agreed on the rewording.

Site looks great, I will comb through it in more detail tomorrow.

I see you guys are not believers in the Oxford Comma. :)

Actually the use of the Oxford comma seems to be inconsistent (which is worse than either using it or not using it).

See the second (http://bitshares.org/#2) page:
Quote
Save and trade in gold, silver, dollars, or other currencies.

But then see the third (http://bitshares.org/#3) and sixth (http://bitshares.org/#6) pages:
Quote
Eliminate the middle men, overhead and bloated profits of traditional banks.
Quote
Simply put, your account can’t be raided, compromised or seized.

I have additional feedback:

The Facebook logo in the footer links to "http://www.facbook.com/officialbitshares" rather than "http://www.facebook.com/officialbitshares". Interestingly, it appears Facebook owns facbook.com and does the redirection.

The contrast of the text needs to improve for better readability. In some cases in needs to be brighter to contrast against the dark backgrounds it is on, and in other cases it needs to be darker to contrast against the bright backgrounds it is on. I also think some of the text would benefit from being thicker, and that is especially true for the navigation text (which I think would also need some kind of shadows to further improve their readability against the image backgrounds on the home page).

In the very first tab/page of the homepage, both the navigation text and the BitShares logo are hard to read because of the bright lights of the animated image behind it. I think it would benefit from some kind of dim translucent background strip which is fixed to the first tab/page and rolls up and out of sight as the user scrolls down. Or maybe there is a better solution. Whatever the solution, the navigation text and BitShares logo just need to be easily readable on the first tab/page of the homepage, and currently they are not.

I also second the change from "MAC" to "Mac OS X".

And someone please correct me if I am wrong, but in the http://bitshares.org/merchants/ page, I think it would be appropriate to capitalize two of the titles as follows: "As Good As Cash" and "Monetize Your Float". At least that is according to the rules here (http://grammar.yourdictionary.com/capitalization/rules-for-capitalization-in-titles.html).

MktDirector,

Please take some of the points the people are making into consideration, a final version, does not always have to be a final version.

Its good on my computer but check out this site.  www.getmadein.com

Something like this could have been done or can be done I think its more effective, https://www.getmadein.com/japan/tokyo-banana-tree

Further addition

Also harness the power of newsletters, really check out the getmadein site and scroll around, Japanese products do rock as well.  (It is not my website)

I like the background image but I think it'd work better in the third space with the title "AS GOOD AS CASH" while the mountains would be first with the title "INCREASE PROFITS".  Mountains first would be less gloomy while 'as good as cash' with the image of people on the streets makes more sense IMO.

Great to see something tangible. Thank you Brian, Cass and Team.

Constructive Criticism: Not formatted well in Chrome on an iPhone. The Mobile and Desktop versions are both cropped.

Why does the Download page have a 32bit and a 64bit windows download ... both pointing to THE SAME exe download file?

Can we have a SOURCES link to github there instead?!

PS: main menu has MUCH better contrast now!! +5%

I don't like the background image of the Merchants page, kind of gloomy. Looks like Hong Kong before a Kaiju attack :D

problem with source links to github is chinese slow loading problem (have to address this issue later on) etc. i'm uploading wallet files directly to .org and then publish also sha1 etc.

And yes, you're right currently jsut one win version out there... asap.. 2nd version is out i'll add it also

Going to give my honest feedback. Not happy with this. Its exactly as i feared; people who go on this site will have no idea what bitshares actually is, and all they'll see are emotionally loaded words instead of any real explanation or description.

I especially don't like the headline. Why not just have the name first, then put the buzzwords underneath? Verbing the product name just seems so tacky and forced.

Also the answer to the tagline question is going to be "because I have no clue what bitshare means". If you want to have a cheeky question like this then it should at least be at the bottom, after a proper description.

The pictures have no relation to the product either, other than showing some computers. Some people might be able to guess that this is a sell page for software but many will get to the bottom and still have zero clue what the entire thing is for.

Amazing job. Great work. On desktop PC, displays v well - however on mobile (Note 3 & iphone) the RHS of images are truncated. Background video image doesn't seem to load, plus the lighter header bar bleaches out the bitshares logo making it harder to read the top left Bitshares logo and the RHS top menu icon, and both their lettering.

The beach image with Lifebuoy is great, but should the word displayed be "Safety", to better match the image?

I like the customer orientation. It is a good teaser to look further in the ressources section.
What could be done is: Have an extra link to the ressources in the about section? Something like: "BitShares uses blockchain technology, similar to what was pioneered by Bitcoin in 2009. If you want to learn more about the technology powering BitShares go to "Wiki", "Blog", ..."

Maybe my understanding of english is too german here, but doesn't this sentence actually mean "it is explicitly required that you trust no one, to use bitshares - so if you trust anyone it wont work?

I'll second that, shouldn't it be

BitShares is trustworthy yet  [it] does not require you to trust anyone.

Actually I didn't. My Firefox window was kept at a smaller size and it cut off the top part.

I want to know, how are the seemingly random images chosen. By your taste and bit of relation in meaning, or out of some deep psychological/marketing studies? For instance the image of the road in 'final' seems apt, but the mountain (is it Kanchenjunga?) on the next page doesn't seem to reinforce the meaning.

And what is it with starting the pages with defocussed crowd? Nxt.org starts with something similar; looks tacky to me but I guess the target base likes it.

I think targeting mainstream users in the broadest sense is too premature, especially for downloading the full node, so I guess that's a point where we disagree on the general marketing direction, and thus my opinion may be of limited use. But especially if mainstream is the target, I think it would be so much better if there were just two simple sentences explaining 1) what the product is 2) how the reader can use the product. Right now the website expects readers to scroll down through a lot of large pictures, then asks people to get started by downloading a program, but it doesn't seem like it properly explains what downloading that program accomplishes. We should at least also explain that they need to go to an exchange and buy BTS or bitUSD to begin earning interest.

However, if I had to design the marketing strategy I think I would use bitshares.org as the place for technical users and bitcoin veterans to get a quick rundown of the specs and as a place to download the client and find exchanges in their country.

Mainstream targeting could be done directly by a bitAsset on-ramp such as getbitusd.com that focused on selling bitassets and letting users download a lightweight client or sign up for a hosted wallet, all in one simple funnel done on a single website.

Really appreciate all the hard work!  It's really looking great.

I really like the colour/branding/font of the Partners page http://bitshares.org/partners/
Could the blue-white-turquoise colouration be used throughout to link the areas together and improve legibility?  Also, have you considered having the absolutely awesome BitShares symbol more prominent, revolving perhaps, at the beginning of the first page?

What BitShares is, is not coming across as well as it might if I imagine myself as a beginner....probably because it is so many things.

BitShares is...
software that you can run on your home computer
software that connects you to all the other people using the BitShares software
a network
a blockchain, which is both a record of the rules governing the interactions across the network and a record of those interactions
a unit of account within the network
a decentralized marketplace (or decentralized ledger) where people can exchange units of account
democratized money
collateral for other units of account

Bitshares software enables you to...
exchange units of account without having to trust a 3rd party
retain privacy levels of your choice
exchange units of account with whomever you choose, at any time, from anywhere with both the BitShares software and an internet connection
exchange units of account at very high speed
exchange units of account at very low cost
exchange units of account securely
hire network employees
fire network employees
create BitAssets, another unit of account which are derivatives of the BitShares unit of account that are pegged to other units of account (both physical & virtual)
create your own unit of account
Earn interest

BitShares represents...
Freedom
Security
Sovereignty
Resilience
Innovation
Trust in Blockchain, not people
Integrity
Vision
Community
Free markets

Just some thoughts.....

But again this is jsut the base .. we want to create a howto page for non technical users and also more skilled .. the good one now is i can easily create all kind of page designs now really fast out of this base ...

Yup like the design, great work guys top notch quality. No, Rune is absolutely correct. It's obvious you guys are trying to target my parents but the problem is my parents will never be interested in Bitshares unless I set up an account for them and explain what it is. You guys have your target audience completely wrong; you should be speaking to likely early adopters. As a marketer, if I send traffic to bitshares.org, there is no way it will convert into either wallet downloads or buyers because it fails to explain what the concept actually is in any meaningful way. It's just a mash of buzzwords. Be clear, not clever.

I could help but I would just take things in a different direction at this point. Too many cooks in a kitchen...

To be perfectly honest, I have no idea how to get average users excited about Bitshares. The only thing that even comes close is interest on their savings but you can't overtly market that because of legal concerns. If it were up to me, I would heavily focus on early adopters and push the vision behind bitshares. It's the first ever p2p company on a blockchain... BitAssets are like bitcoin but without volatility.

The biggest thing holding Bitshares back is the "bring in the mainstream" attitude. While I totally get that's the end game; we want to go where Bitcoin didn't, it shouldn't be our starting point. The starting point should be explaining the Bitshares concept at a high level.

Yes, was assuming the OP, Brian Page, marketing director is choosing the marketing target and is in control of the message/content. Waiting to hear from him.

The design and feeling of the site is of course much better than the last one (I don't mean x-info)...
+5% for that.... But since I think we deserve(?) at least the second place in crypto world right now, I will be really happy only if we have a better site than our competitor...

https://ripple.com/

I will be honest and say that I wished bitshares had the site of ... ripple ... (I couldn't imagine something better than that, even the messages they deliver fit perfectly for us too))
On the other hand I suppose it has cost ripple much more funds than it has cost for us to do it.
So if the "value for money" indicator is better for us, I am perfectly ok with that  ;)

PS are we going to have details about how much funds we needed to spend to have this done?

I think BitShares has always been about the superior technology, not the marketing.

This crypto has a secret weapon that no other cyrpto has - user's can buy $1 worth of stable asset, resulting in $3 worth of the underlying shares being taken off the market. That's what will eventually drive up the market cap.

So isnt that what we should be focusing on? Making partnerships with companies that want to provide their customers with exposure to gold, silver (and even bitcoin). For example a company like Bitreserve wants to create stability by swapping their customer's Bitcoin for stable assets like gold and dollars. They could use BitAssets as the backend collateral.

Perhaps BitShares is more of a company-to-company kind of business as opposed to one that is instantly appealing to consumers.

You can look at every 2.0 project and find nice catchy looking websites. What we need are partnerships to harness the distinct advantage of BitShares.

If we were able to shows pictures of the wallet and demonstrate its benefits step by step while pointing to its features, this website would be a lot easier to create

First thanks for working on the site to get this done.

It seems like you have a great amount of feed back so I will leave that to others as you have some good suggestions here.I did want to add the sizing  is off on the main page when viewing in chrome on a google nexus phone, the N and D in Sound is cut off. The links display at the top but the text color and background color are to close to the same and its barley visible.

I only have one question, is Cass the only person actually working on the site? Let me clarify, is he the only one with hands on the keyboard, uploading and creating images and doing the coding?

It's a wordpress theme, so anyone can be given access to change the content. The coding is very minimal.

Thanks.

I am trying to understand why it took so long to get up and why its very unpolished given the amount of time it was worked on.

I don't mean for the statement to sound insulting.

I am guessing you can only put it together as quickly as you are given content?

Yes you're right about that when you start ... but later on if you want to develop on top of this ... then  more coding skills are needed ...

+5% since there is no invictus anymore. Anyone (those that run as paid delegates would have the ressources) can make a site and promote BitShares to an different target group and make money by being paid as a delegate.

I would LOVE to see Methodx doing that since he has great ideas and a solid practicable perspective on doing business!

I agree. I think at this point we need to target early adopters/more sophisticated audience. Overall the landing page looks good - nice and sleek, but let's provide early adopters with some more info.

Also I think we are completely missing another very important group - developers. BitShares is most advanced crypto platform, ultimate money API, let's communicate this better to developers. I would put DEVELOPERS link before MERCHANTS - we expect developers to build tools that would be used by merchants.
And probably there should be a special page targeting TRADERS, so we can have these links on top:
TRADERS MERCHANTS DEVELOPERS
each link leads to special landing page targeting this specific group.
So bitshares.org front page targets general audience, the one who can put himself into more specific category would click it on the top link to read information more specific to him. Or if marketing campaign targets specific group it can directly link to more specialized landing page.

Yes valzav developers are on our list!
They will get their own section like merchants and then with introduction on API etc. all stuff there!
This is just the beginning IMO …

pls check https://squareup.com and www.ripple.com

IMO if get it worked to combine those site concepts, from design point of view square and from then content point of view ripple ... then
we hit the goal…

Great work Cass :)

I don't expect much to be changed, just giving my feedback...

My impression - The main part missing from all of it is the 'how', the 'what' content is also sometimes a bit unspecific.

I disagree with the full on mainstream angle but if they are going that route there should at least be a simple succinct 'how it works' page imo. The advantages of a blockchain are essentially the USP of BitShares. (I also asked a few friends what they thought and they said it was 'fine/good, a bit fluffy, fine as an intro but then needs to go into more detail.') - So the 'how it works' page could solve that.

Also most other services are provided by centralised, regulated companies and so it might be PR negative if you're seen to be advertising something similar to financial services without clearly disclosing/explaining that & how BitShares is different imo.

I would personally re-arrange the pages in this order...

1. Profitable - I would choose a different graphic, something that says profit more. I would also like to give them an idea of the interest, 'currently averaging % P.A'
2. Secure - Liked the wording, I would move the vault graphic from 'profitable' to here.
3. Low Cost - Didn't really like the wording nothing better springs to mind though.
4. Instant - Maybe specifically mention worldwide transaction times of 5-10 seconds.
5. Flexible - Fine, liked the graphic.
6. Limitless - Liked the graphic and content

Then a clear link to the 'How BitShares Works' page

The merchants list - (Cold, rainy street that's not that busy is a poor choice for main graphic imo, really bustling marketplace would be preferable.)

The rest of the content is good. I don't know if it's worth being blatantly clear somewhere, maybe under 'Your Business is your business'  -  'With BitShares all your sales & income are completely private.' I would even put that at/nearer the top.

I know these things constantly change but again something specific about current transaction fees and average interest rates, perhaps updated weekly, gives people something specific to compare.

So 20 days is a rough time frame to build a site.

Thats really pretty good and explains alot.

I saw you had a thread posted asking to get your on forum subsection where you can go to get a clear take of peoples ideas, quickly and easily. Hopefully one of the mods will listen and create this for you as it can only help you complete your tasks. I tried to get in touch with bitsappphire about a week ago but I met with no success. I had an idea for a way to keep the emotional selling propositions, but also have some real details on the introductory pages. How about with every scroll, in addition to the buzzword text there's also a "fact box" with some technical information pertaining to that selling point? It will create more clutter, but it might help customers feel like they're dealing with a real product. Perhaps it is worth a try. This is my ideas for how the frontpage could be done, keeping the current style and pictures. I'm not satisfied with the text I've come up with, but I still think it's better than the current text (which also feels unfinished). Perhaps someone could improve on this further?

No, Rune is absolutely correct. It's obvious you guys are trying to target my parents but the problem is my parents will never be interested in Bitshares unless I set up an account for them and explain what it is. You guys have your target audience completely wrong; you should be speaking to likely early adopters. As a marketer, if I send traffic to bitshares.org, there is no way it will convert into either wallet downloads or buyers because it fails to explain what the concept actually is in any meaningful way. Oh I really love this idea. It could go on the front page as well, bitshares is ALWAYS ready to hire the best in the industry to help improve the product. Our product is the best, because our developers are the best.

I feel the same way.

The UI looks nice enough but there's no clear explanation as to what BitShares is.  I'd much rather have content then flashy pictures that don't have anything to do with the product.  There is no clear target audience here.  I'd go so far as to say their is no target audience at all.  If I didn't already know about BitShares I would only be more confused after going to this site.  The focus should be the software; that is the deliverable.  Without the software it's nothing but idealism.

Check out bitreserve.org and use their messaging as a starting point.

Bitreserve is basically a centralized version of BitShares.  They currently have $7mil in funding (seeking $10mil more) so I assume they have a much larger and better funded marketing team.  Use their messaging as an example.  Let their marketing dollars work for BitShares.

Perhaps someone could improve on this further?

for this you have to ask which target groups we're trying to reach ... as said before … when we want to hit mainstream… the average user doens't want to know how it works ..
he want's to know that it works ... Guess most of paypal users don't know whats go behind the scenes ...

If i may ask.. which image language you would go with ?... Problem IMO is if you want it like it is .. completely technical …then you can't catch the *masses with it … they aren'T interested in this technical stuff ...

but thx for your input
c

No, Rune is absolutely correct. It's obvious you guys are trying to target my parents but the problem is my parents will never be interested in Bitshares unless I set up an account for them and explain what it is. You guys have your target audience completely wrong; you should be speaking to likely early adopters. As a marketer, if I send traffic to bitshares.org, there is no way it will convert into either wallet downloads or buyers because it fails to explain what the concept actually is in any meaningful way. It's just a mash of buzzwords. Be clear, not clever.

 +5%

I could not agree more. This is a slick looking brochure that achieves pretty much nothing.

Example:
"Low cost
How do you avoid a swarm of killer fees?
Eliminate the middle men, overhead and bloated profits of traditional banks. Truly buzzworthy."

What does that mean? What is the point?

I would LOVE to see Methodx doing that since he has great ideas and a solid practicable perspective on doing business!

Bitshares may be novel ground but how can dozens of potentially conflicting messages be anything but confusing and damaging? I'm interested to know if such a strategy has ever worked successfully?

Good work.

I feel, that the developer/implementor (Cass) should not be in the front-line answering questions as to content/direction and defending choices made in the brief.

Agree with other comments, that the site seems to be pitched at a user that doesn't yet exist and probably won't for some-time.

To draw a comparison - Bitcoin didn't become dominant by being pitched at your grandmother.

Instead it expanded it's user base outwards from crypto-roots to early-adopters to tech-savy younger people, while benefiting from a growing network effects on forums/reddit/twitter.

At the moment I feel it's all very opaque.

After Shapeshift.io integrates BTS and BitUSD (as well as other BitAssets), the functionality that Bitreserve offers could be replicated exactly.

Bitcoin deposit addresses for representative currencies can be launched as a web service for buying BitAssets for your BitShares wallet.

Another thing that kinda made me go... Huh?... was the "Secure" section and the "Profit" section.
For "Profit" there's the photo of a Money Safe (Vault)?
For "Secure" there's the photo of a beach with Life Guard ring?

IMO the photos contradict the message, especially the "Profit" section showing a vault for the photo. How does a vault create profit?
I can kind of see the connection of the "Secure" message w/Life ring... but I think a better representation would be something like a computer w/ a bunch of chains and a pad lock around it (or something to that effect).

Other than those couple things I think the website looks A1 top notch  :D
Great job!!!

TRADERS MERCHANTS DEVELOPERS

I really like the TRADERS MERCHANTS DEVELOPERS landing page idea.  Don't be afraid of taking up too much menu space - the more I know about the actors in the system, the quicker I can evaluate it.  There should also be a Menu item for CUSTOMERS or INVESTORS or SAVERS or something that the average bitAsset user (who wants no part in risky activity) can identify with.  A How it Works section can then tie together each actors role into a clearer picture.

sorry to nitpick but was any consensus reached on the phrasing of:

"BitShares is trustworthy yet requires you trust no one"

it just feels like a forced sentence (I have to add I am not a native english speaker), it seems a bit negative (as in TRUST NO ONE!) and it gives a feeling of 'how do I have to interpret this' which should not be the case with these 'catchphrases'.

Can it not be rephrased more in the line of:

Bitshares is trustworthy and/yet does not require you to trust anyone...

I do like the other catchphrases!

Hey team.

So most of the usability/error edits have been looked over and are in the process of being fixed now. Thank you for letting us know what they are.

As far as the target audience and message of the site (something a lot of people mentioned), the concept for the new site was gone over at length with Bytemaster and other members of the core team in VA before we began working on it, and it was decided that the main target market would be primarily individual users and merchants.

It was also discussed that the site would be simpler and focused on benefits/features of the core product only (BitShares).  As you can see, we stripped away a LOT of the old content from the site and aimed to make BitShares much simpler than it was before with only one core service and a lot less side "products."

With that being said, Agreed - we need more content and fleshing out of the description of what BitShares is, and we're working on that now. (We are discussing a video as a possibility).  Some of your suggestions on additional content/explanation are awesome. I've reached out directly to a few of you today, to ask permission to use some of your ideas and words on the site. This week we'll aiming to get that done....

Please revisit the site this weekend, and then post up new ideas or feedback as you think of them. Keep in mind, we can't incorporate every single idea or suggestion, but we are definitely seeing the site through all of your eyes and taking the feedback to heart.  BitShares.org will never "arrive" at perfection, but will be a continual work of improvement.

Thanks and keep the ideas coming.... B

Hey team.

So most of the usability/error edits have been looked over and are in the process of being fixed now. Thank you for letting us know what they are.

Brian and Cass and team, I think the site looks terrific. Work in progress, but it's a big big improvement. You guys deserve our thanks.

Question: It's important to have a core identity. But would it be possible to have different landing sites or page destinations for different funnels and target groups?

Yes, certainly.  We have another site that will be just for complete newbies that Murderistic and team are working on.  So, yes, there will be separate "funnel" sites that are very targeted to specific niches.... bitshares.org is primarily an information/brand/and identity site, not primarily a marketing site.  Just keep that in mind.  Will be sharing the other site once it's up...murderistic may be able to give some ideas/input on this as well..... b

Brian,
I think that a video would be an excellent idea. People are very visual and you only have so much time to capture their attention. People will not read 20 pages to understand the concept but they will watch a video.

Great design!

Here is my input:

What is the marketing function of the website? To drive Downloads?
If that is the goal, you did it well.

I think a valuable thing to think about is lead generation. Maybe after the download page you can offer something of value(BTS, ebook, video serie, shareholder newsletter) in exchange for their email adress.

Building an email list to communicate with the community would be valuable. With that marketing asset, you could build a better glue in the shareholder community, the dev community, drive traffic to new videos, etc.

On the internet, email is still king.

Keep up the good work. +5%

Mobile Responsive is def important for SEO.  The smaller the site file is the better.  Speed of loading site is equally important.

SEO is a non-issue. Mobile optimization and speed is important if you're targeting long-tail keywords. When people search for "bitshares", bitshares.org will always be the first result in Google.

Site load speed is one of the top on site factors for ranking factors according to numerous analysis reports regardless of long tail or short tail.

SEO for bitShares is irrelevant. The only keywords that matter are 'bitshares', 'bitusd' and 'bitgold'. Even if you do manage to rank for keywords such as "online banking" (which won't happen after panda and penguin) you won't get a conversion event from it. What keywords are you trying to rank for and why?

Should we move the 'DOWNLOAD' menu item to the first spot?

MERCHANTS
NEWS
TV
BLOG
DOWNLOAD
MORE…

Currently it follows two menu links - NEWS and TV that take you to external sites - with no easy way to return to BitShares.org, I think DOWNLOAD should come before MERCHANTS.

Also, the BitShares FAQ  http://bitshares.org/faq/ page which is prominently displayed on R/BitShares FAQ http://www.reddit.com/r/BitShares/comments/2edvtk/rbitshares_faq_newcomers_please_read/ is nowhere to be found via the BitShares.org site menu, most likely because it is so out of date. It should probably be updated and linked to in the menu, or if the wiki etc. is better for this sort of thing maybe it should be removed altogether. Considering it is the first hit on Google for BitShares FAQ, it would probably be best to have it updated and incorporated into the MORE area of the menu.

btw, @xeroc on your R/BitShares FAQ you link to the outdated Fee Flow image (BTSX), there is a more recent one somewhere.

Well maybe you guys are thinking not like the majority of users... How can we know that your thinking is matched with the majority of users?
Why don't you ask the forum members before changes like that? Make a poll first here to have a right feeling! Maybe it was not the best home page in existence but it was great and much better than the current one... but maybe I am wrong ... and you are right... but I would take feedback first from this community and would not ignore them! Make a poll and act accordingly please.

Doing every little thing by consensus is too inefficient.  We need to develop rules on minor actions that can be performed by representatives (without consensus ) and major actions that require a grass roots vote.  I suppose as DPOS evolves these rules will emerge.

yes couldn't say it better  +5%

if we want to poll every decision before acting then this would decrease our dev process significantly IMO
