General Discussion / Who are We?
« on: March 18, 2015, 04:36:56 pm »
Hey BTS community,

I'm an intern at the BitShares development/marketing office. Working with Adam and Will, we created a survey to better understand who members of BitShares are. The poll is totally voluntary and once completed you can look at what the results are for the rest of the community. It will be interesting to see who is in the BitShares community and will help us to understand who to market to, in order to further expand BitShares. Here is a link to the poll. >>> survey .

Cheers,
Ben

General Discussion / Re: SMS Development for Developing Regions

In regards to M-Pesa , it functions based off of a pay as you go model, where mpesa credits (kenyan shilling) are added to your account VIA SMS or by visiting a Vodaphone retailer to physically add money to your account. Here is a wiki with the history of its beginnings. There are many retailers for Vodaphone who are licensed to set up your account for M-Pesa, and they need photo ID's as verification (not something BTS necessarily desires). It might be possible to set up a wallet which would take M-Pesa credits easily enough and performs basic BTS services, given that there exists a service which functions as a transfer service between Bitcoin and M-Pesa. ( Bitpesa )

I just found this conference that takes place in Africa on April 16th and 17th. I think if were looking to get into the market in Africa, either via Mpesa or by other means, we need someone to be at the conference. The founder of BitPesa will be there  as well so this could be a good way to  gain an inroads into understanding how their service came to be, as well as recruiting BTS delegates from Africa.

General Discussion / Re: Use cases for manual testing of GUI
« on: February 04, 2015, 10:56:09 pm »
I compiled a list of all these tests with dezra25 and we will be testing them in the near future.

Manual GUI Tests
_______________
-Making a new wallet
-registering an account with the faucet
-registering an account without a faucet
-voting
-sort margin call orders by margin call price
-sort margin call orders by expiration date
-Buy market pegged BitAsset with BTS
-Sell market pegged BitAsset with a price limit
-Create a UIA
-Issue UIA
-Buy UIA with BTS
-Sell UIA for BTS
-Buy UIA with another UIA
-Sell UIA for another UIA
-Make sure price feed display updates for asset
-make sure all is well (display fully up-to-date, reasonable memory suage) after leaving
market page open overnight
-Use the BTS: URL scheme to vote for a delegate
-Discount from internet for 30 seconds and reconnect
-Burn accounts to wall
-edit your profile
-Transfer money Between accounts
-Short Market pegged assets

Is there any way we could have a feed for at least one of the market pegged assets? That would let both myself and dezra test a whole bunch of things that we currently don't have the potential to test.

We also thought the idea of having a time when both myself and dezra can be online to invite people to fool around with Devshares. This would be easier if we had a feed live for a market pegged asset on Devshares.

I think its fantastic that we are able to connect via email (given a bit of modification) but that is not exactly what I was saying. The African innovation scene seems to be one based of a very practical approach to problems that they encounter. I'm curious if BTS were available in this format would people in a place like Africa want to adopt it? Considering the fact that they already to mobile banking, this could be a good avenue to grow BTS. I think the ability for BTS to work in areas without a super-fast internet connection and massive processing power ( like via email) is something that we should look into in the future.

General Discussion / SMS Development for Developing Regions
« on: February 02, 2015, 07:54:33 pm »
Recently, I was thinking about the lite wallet and mobile development in Bitshares and I remembered watching this TED Talk a few months ago and being very impressed by it. An SMS service using BTS could facilitate transactions which currently (due to hardware requirements and a lack of fast internet) are unable to even access BTS.

In a larger sense, many of the people who would use an SMS service don't have bank accounts, and their currencies are not nearly as stable as if they had a BitUSD, BitCNY, or BitGOLD asset. Allowing them to have a private, secure stash of wealth (not under their mattress) would do a lot for facilitating development.

I found evidence of one mobile banking system already in place by Vodaphone and others examples of unique innovations such as SMS weather services, cloud storage, and job boards. (Parent link for all of these innovations.)

Does BTS have anything like this in development for unique market penetration?

Technical Support / Hello / Delegate fees & Burning BTS Questions
« on: January 31, 2015, 10:35:20 pm »
 Hey Friends,

My name is Ben and I am interning for Follow My Vote/ Bitshares in the Blacksburg Office. I am helping out with QA Testing and trying to get to a level where I can aid in development for the team as a whole.

My first set of questions is in regards to how delegate fees are awarded. If I make a transaction and I pay into the fee pool, how is this distributed to the delegates? Are these fees subject to the delegate pay percentage or are they exempt? Do the delegates get a set amount from the fee pool or is it based upon either the amount in the pool or the amount of transactions conducted in the last block produced?

My  second set of questions is in regards to the burning of BTS. How does burning BTS factor into the "cap" of BTS that can be produced. I know that by burning BTS, we reduce the overall supply of BTS in existence at the current moment and thus increase the value of the BTS that we do own. Do we as owners of BTS (and shareholders of the DAC ) know how many shares have been burned. In essence, I'm asking if we will ever really know or be able to predict the amount of BTS that will be in existence in the future. If you factor in the BTS frozen into bitUSD or other Market Pegged assets we never really get a good idea of what the true Market Cap of BitShares is.

I am also interested in knowing how the "burning" of an asset is marked on the blockchain. Is there a certain label that these BTS are affixed with so the blockchain knows they are deleted?

I hope these questions make sense and there are some answers that can be sorted out. I look forward to learning more and helping out BTS in the future.

Cheers,
Ben
