Yes Protoshares can still be mined after the initial Bitshares chain is released. Bitshares on February 28th is only the first chain, more chains and DACs will be released after that for a long time.

Protoshares will have 2 million total and only 1.5 million have been mined. I also believe after the 2 millionth Protoshare that is mined there will be 1% per year additional that can be mined (I believe this is true, but not 100% sure).

When is the last protoshare (2 millionth) supposed to be mined? And what does the 1% increment mean? That 1% of 2 million PTS will be mineable next year or 101%?   ???

1% it's 0.19012850 PTS per block, it's will happened after 218000 blocks and according my calculation at the end of this year.

From BitShares-PTS source code:
Code: [Select]
// Subsidy may be a minimum of 0.19012850*COIN
// Expected 365.25 * 24 * 12 * 0.19012850 = approx 20,000 coins per year, 1% annual inflation
if(nSubsidy<0.19012850*COIN){nSubsidy=0.19012850*COIN;}
