Hey guys, what you think about this story of community - government opposition?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peoples_Temple

Their leader/s definitely appealed to the more irrational, animal and emotional parts of the human brain. So much so that it ended in tragedy.

Look, attempting to guilt some dude into Bitshares because some chick on YouTube gave him spank bank material is not going to do what you want it to in the cryptocommunity. Reaching out beyond the cryptocommunity in this fashion will also fail. This is a serious thing with serious implications in the long term for all of us and potentially the world. Enticing boners to Bitshares is juvenile and retarded. This isn't your WoW guild or BF3 clan we are recruiting for.  We are attempting to disrupt and replace Wall St., ForEx, Remittence, etc. Basically the entire global currency network and structure is just beyond Bitshares fingertips.  It may take a few years just to touch that area legitimately and maybe a decade before there is any real grasp.  A token figurehead appealing to sex deprived men will achieve nothing. You know why? Because they are already here, as determined by a lot of your responses. I can hear the mouth breathing through the interwebs in this forum thread.

Let's try and keep this thing classy. No infomercials either(I was against that too)!

If she's really here to just use her educated experience by way of team MethodX, great. Welcome, I look forward to your contribution.

I was against that too..

I agree with your post. You make excellent points.

I also agree with your statement that it may take a decade or so before there is any real grasp. Who knows its possible it might take less, like 5 years or so.

Google wallet has been out for years and Apple pay just came out yet almost no one pays with their smartphone via NFC. Society at large isn't comfortable with alternative monies or methods of payment. At least not yet. In the meantime we should work on perfecting the technology and creating a niche community revolving around Bitshares.

Maybe we should also be more entrepreneurial and start businesses and services that accept BitUSD and such.

Even if the DNS was on a blockchain, the servers would still need to be protected.

Imagine if we had decentralized DNS combined with decentralized server hosting - now youre talking.

Decentralized hosting is what maidsafe is trying to accomplish I think.

Thepiratebay is down and I figured this out the other day I was "browsing" on the site. Needless to say that I was very irked because now I had to "browse" on a different torrent site. ;)

Anyways, I thought about Bitshares and the whole DNS portion of the project. I'm not knowledgeable at all with how the whole domain name system works. (I haven't really tried learning either)

If there was a file sharing website on Bitshares DNS would it be much more resilient against the authorities? Could file sharing websites be the "killer app" for the DNS portion of the project?

are we able to re adjust the supply of user issued assets if none have been issued? or is that still something that is broken?

You can update every field if supply is 0

"and carry out surveillance of computers both in the U.S. and around the world." That's ****** ludicrous!

Any idea on how someone could protect themselves from this? Would encrypting your hard drive help?

BTS seems pretty sound but isn't guaranteed to succeed. Paying back your loan is a certainty though.

The choice is yours.

I did not read through 10 pages of posts but aren't the Bitshares-PTS pretty much worthless even if returned?

It is funny how you think the world is a 2 dimensional object.

Not only 2 dimensional in general, but leaving  in exactly the 2 detentions you have decided to put on it.

Actually it is 10 dimensions depending on what physicists you talk to it might be 11 dimensions. We only perceive 4 though. :)

Jae, I'm right there with you. Not a single thing you've said in this thread is wrong. There are plenty of racists who hate Obama (that has been proven actually). The country is better off now than it was in 2008 (much higher employment for one thing). A certain TV network lies. And Ted Cruz is a moron. Check, check, check, check.

Yet I also agree with the other posters that there is more going on. Neither Obama nor Cruz nor their parties are truly addressing the problems we need to have fixed.

In the end, the party labels and the regular pendulum swing between them in these elections is doing little to address the fact that we are using our planet's resources at a voraciously unsustainable pace and polluting much faster than the planet's ability to heal, that kids are being treated with drugs instead of nourished, while their schools cannot afford pencils, that the economy is run by big banks, agriculture is run by chemical companies, the middle class and upward mobility have nearly disappeared, and meanwhile we are spending trillions of dollars we don't have to prop up a house of cards...those are the things that Obama and Cruz don't even talk about. Because they understand it is the big financial elites that run the world. Presidents, Senators, and governments just work for them.

There are also plenty of racists who hate white people...leading with this argument is ridiculous.

I agree with your statement and it really isn't just white people that are racists. There are some blacks, hispanics, and asians that are racist as well. However, people that do in fact have racist tendencies have common beliefs to the white racists. In general they are 'conservative' don't take certain scientific theories seriously like evolution of mankind in the animal kingdom or acknowledgment of global warming and they supposedly derive morals from fallacious religious texts. If they had it there way they would like a theocracy.

Racism is not the only thing driving hate of Obama. Some people don't like his policies or positions on issues. So there is some substantive disagreement. I'd say the racism represents a single digit (low double digit, at most) percentage of the people who don't like him.
Thank god for a sense of rationality.

Wow lol

Using the words "god" and "rationality" in the same sentence isn't... rational lol

Unless there is an actual study out there that shows exactly what percentage of people and in particular those on the right hate him for his skin color, I think our opinions are based on our interactions with people in the state we live in.

For instance, I live in a very conservative state and to be honest it seems to me that about 90% of the people who identify as conservative here dislike the President because of his skin color and not his policies.

That is also true, however the whole point of my original post isn't to spread a let's hate whitey message. What else is it if it's not racism that drives the hate towards the President? I wouldn't be saying that if we really were worse off today than we were prior to Obama being president.

Since we are fast approaching Remembrance Day, suffice it to say that he reminds me of the (un)thinking lemmings in the 1st World War who charged into machine gun fire ostensibly for their kin and country but in fact, because they were too lazy and uncritical, for  the profit of another Banker's War. Am I going to celebrate those brain-dead idiots by glorifying their "exploits"? Yeah, right. Go peddle your poppies to today's zombies.

My intention isn't to state whether or not I agree with you.
I think, however, it's worth bearing in mind that it was a lot harder to educate oneself in the early 20th century. Decent information was much harder to obtain, predominantly due to the lack of internet. Do you think you are viewing this from a strong point of retrospect?

"Decent information" and the advances in computer technology and information systems are irrelevant to the hard work of going inside and examining how your beliefs were formed and coming to an understanding of how your perceptions are skewed, and reinforced, by those beliefs.

I understand, and agree in large part. However, "decent information" is'nt completely irrelevant. The way I see it, when a broad base of information is easier to come by, it is harder for the powers that be to affect people's opinions.

Net Neutrality' is Obamacare for the Internet- Ted Cruz
That broad base of information wouldn't be easier to come by if net neutrality were no more. Idiots like Ted Cruz aren't in favor of net neutrality as a matter of fact internet freedom is advocated by people who lean left.

It is easy to get frustrated by the fact that many people don't bother to think hard about the world around them, and about the way their own thoughts and actions arise. It leads to problems when people are easily manipulated.

Exactly which is why people still believe in Jesus, New Testament, Old testament. People believe vaccines cause autism when that has been proven false and instead what happens is that idiots that believe this are the reason diseases like polio which were considered eradicated in the United States have sprung up again. It is also why people who watch faux news were terrified of ebola.

The internet allows the wide availability of information, and also the ability to share thoughts and ideas quite freely. I say that this makes it harder for the powerful to brainwash the masses. If only more people would stop playing Farmville on Facebook, and start to delve a bit deeper!

Luckily I don't play farmville or spend time on facebook. Sometimes I do read scientific articles by searching for them on Google scholar though. Again wide easy access to information is threatened by idiots like Ted Cruz that equate net neutrality to Obamacare. Yeah lets allow mega corporations to pay for the information you have access to. They did this with mainstream media now they're trying to move to the world wide web.
