Title: Windows Azure Free Trial
Post by: SP4RK7 on November 14, 2013, 12:51:07 am
Just thought I'd post this as I've just started using it and it's been ok so far.

$200 free trial up to 20 cores :)

I'm using this as well. You get 20 free cores for 1 month. I get about 210 coll/min from all the cores. You'll need a credit card to setup the free trial.

I think it's up to one month or $200 which ever comes first :)

I roughly worked out, that using all 20 cores you will get about 120 hours for free, my math may be out slightly though?

If you have an MSDN subscription you get a $200 per month allowance included. Just found that out :)

Cool will have to check that out. I wonder if it stacks on top of the free trial? so $400 for first month

It made me pick one of the two options. The MSDN option doesn't require a credit a card.

once you burn through the $200 does it just cancel? or do you havta cancel?

With MSDN?

Without MSDN?

I'm not 100% sure, but people on the ypool chatbox seemed to think they would just cancel your subscription once the $200 ran out and wait for you to upgrade

I will be keeping an eye on it anyway just to make sure it does cancel as they have my CC details.

I can only see 8 cores option. But the dashboard says I am using 8 of 20 cores. Will it auto boost to 20 cores? Or I chose the wrong one?

Can't see any options to cancel, it just says 28 days/$200 left on the free subscription and then an option to upgrade to a full subscription.

It does say on the main page no strings, just a free trial.

You need to set up more than 1 virtual machine either 5 x 4 core or 2 x 8 and 1 x 4

click the virtual machine option and then press the + at the bottom of the dashboard, it takes a few minutes to get running.

Thanks for the confirmation.

I think the time period depends on what VM you are using. Windows is more expensive then Linux so obviously less time.

You are charged the same fee as if you were renting by the hour, it is just deducted out of your $200 credit. Once you reach zero they just shut it off so you don't incur extra charges.

How many pts/hour does this make? For how many hours?

A $200 free credit isn't free. It's going to be worth $200 if it turns out you need a cloud computing for a server or something. So as not to lose money, evaluating your probability of needing cloud and expected time of that event is needed.

Got 3 VPS running:

Using all 20 cores, 56+56+28 RAM and have the miners running on them with 100% CPU usage.

Its costing me around 50$ every 24 hours so I'll probably mine for 4 days and a few hours before everything is shutdown.

To actually buy this would be crazy very expensive.

I don't think you need to use the additional RAM of the A6 and A7 machines, just use 2 x XL (14GB) and 1 x L (7GB) I'm getting about 90 col/m out of the XL and 46 col/m out of the L

It will probably last a bit longer time wise I think 4.9 days

Not sure but I think they only charge you for computing time (CPU usage), I did not mistake and have too much memory only using about 7GB out of the 56GB. Might look for something cheaper and rent by the hour, amazon spot instances seems good but I'll wait for a PTC mining calculator to be released to see if its profitable.

Yes that's what I mean, you have picked systems A6 and A7 which are more expensive, and will use up your free credit quicker and the extra RAM is pointless.

If you choose systems L and XL you will get the same mining speed but it will use up your free credit slower

L = 4 core 7GB $0.36/hour
XL=8core 14GB $0.72/hour

A6=4core 28GB RAM $0.80/hour
A7=8core 56GB RAM $1.60/hour

Once you have spent $200 of the free trial it will stop

After talking to a microsoft assistant engineer i got the understanding that the 29 days are free.  BUT if you use up the 200 dollar the exceeding ammount will be charged on your credit card.

no. I was at 1148 Norwegian crowns. Around 199 dollar.
Started it up today and it ran about 5 hours. Impossible to use the limit within that time.

Here is the TOS of the free trial:

http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/offers/ms-azr-0044p

It clearly states that once you use all your credit
limit the service is stopped and you will have an
option to use pay-as-you-go plan after that.

Don't worry guys they can't charge you extra since its a free trial, its a 30-day trial and a 220$ credit. Trial ends with 30 days or after you spend all of the 220$ free credit whichever comes first. After that you can either leave and everything you have is terminated or continue by paying upfront for the amount of hours you want.

They'll never ever charge your credit card after using the trial credits as they need your consent to whether you would like to continue using their service.

Sure that solves the problem.

The azure machines works great but i have one issue.
I created one  8 core with windows and one 8 core with ubuntu.
Both mine on ypool but the ubuntu machine is about 10% faster. I thought performance should be nearly the same?!?
