Title: Zach Lym ("indolering"), Namecoin core dev, visiting BTS team for trial week.
Post by: toast on November 21, 2014, 10:38:01 pm
Zach is a skilled usability engineer who is passionate about Namecoin and decentralized DNS and identity. Anyone who cares about blockchain + internet infrastructure should know who Zach is.

I am spending the remainder of the private DNS fund plus a bit of my own money to bring Zach to VA for a trial week in early January, much like we did with dbrock and drltc.

This trial week will be paid work, he will probably attack low-hanging fruit in our wallet usability. But the real purpose of the visit is to see how well we get along philosophically, brainstorm ideas for how we can keep supporting Zach's work in a way that benefits BTS, and lay out what needs to get done for decentralized DNS to become a reality.

Don't get too excited, there is still a huge spectrum of possible outcomes here. But poaching a namecoin core dev to work on a BTS DNS sidechain may just be one of them, so let's all be nice to Zach =D

+5% Besides BitAssets, I was most excited about the prospect of DNS. Censorship resistant domains are an absolute MUST.

Anyone else feeling the shift this past week? So many great things coming together, congrats!

Easy to use decentralized DNS is going to be such a huge achievement. Would be awesome if it ended up coming packaged with the bitshares full node, then using .p2p domains within the bitshares community would be almost as convenient as regular domain names since I think most of us already has it installed on our main machines.

YES.

Poach all of the devs.

I want to see a Zach Lym paid delegate in our future.  (And on that note, can we please elect Toast and the other core devs already?  Seriously everyone!)

Today it is a namecoin dev.

Next year hopefully it will be people named Vitalik and Gavin. ;)
This is the power of paid delegates.

Absolutely! Feeling very positive that a few weeks after the merger, we are seeing significant movement by the outstanding team and community supporting BitShares.

For a very short period of time earlier this month I had some concerns about what the next tangible actions would be; now my optimism about this project is at an all time high. The feeling of being the unknown underdog is so excitingly fun and bullish, I am pumped!

It's not just about making money and I hope we all know that by now - thank you for those of you working so hard day and night to make it a reality! The BitShares community is challenging the status quo and I am just so happy to be a part of it.

There is also the possibility that he gets to know your operation behind the scene--the strengths and weaknesses and uses it to one-up bitshares....and gets paid for it.  Like toast said, there is a range of potential outcomes.

Not saying this to be negative but to try to temper expectations. I learned that the hard way after thinking it was almost certain overstock would go with bitshares tech for their exchange...due in large part to the long, free consultation meetings invictus had held with them behind the scenes. We see where that went :P

That said, it is an open source movement so it should be interesting to see how it unfolds!

I COMPLETLY agree. It's how I got involved with crypto back in April. Namecoin was the first cryptocoin I owned.

I only want to say ,this kind of thing is : +5%.

After the merger , BTS is becoming  more attractive to excellent devs to work together for the whole picture.

Personally , have better feelings about things going around rightnow.

There is also the possibility that he gets to know your operation behind the scene--the strengths and weaknesses and uses it to one-up bitshares....and gets paid for it.  Like toast said, there is a range of potential outcomes.

Toast already knows my secret motive: convincing BitShares to move aggressively on .p2p!

Back in September (long before I ever spoke with Toast 1:1) I wrote a forum post outlining why BitShares and other cryptos are not our enemies but our allies (cannot post links, check the Namecoin blog).  Namecoin developers are motivated solely by a desire to make the internet usable, censorship resistant, and secure.   I'm betting that BitShares will want a part of this revolution.

Bitcoin has already made the devastating 2011 banking blockade of Wikileaks an event that could not be repeated today.  When Tor integrates .bit directly, the Wikileaks Tor hidden service will be accessible at Wikileaks.bit to everyone running Firefox; removing DNS from the censors' toolkit!  Blockchain based identity will help secure communications for whistle-blowers like Snowden.  And proof-of-bandwidth will make Tor scalable.

Even if one of my proposals goes through I get to work on Namecoin full-time, I want to collaborate with BitShares.  I'm looking forward to "[getting] to know your operation behind the scene--the strengths and weaknesses" because complementary differences make our combined efforts more sustainable.   I spoke with Vitalik this week, and I can assure you that there are common areas of interest for all of the major cryptos.

That being said, even Linus had to work for Transmeta for six years before switching to kernel development full time. I think I have a lot to offer BitShares and I'm looking foward to working with the team.

I believe that once version 1 of the bitshares protocol has been finished and things like full node and mobile wallets are polished, BTS shareholders will vote to aggressively pursue new markets such as DNS (a potentially gargantuan market due to the fact that it is a natural monopoly).

I'm convinced that the bitshares community will throw a lot more money after developing cheap, universal and censorship resistant DNS than any other community, because to us it will actually represent a significant source of value, so where everyone else are motivated only by idealism, we are motivated by both idealism and profit.

Great to have you on the team Zach! I like your vision.

Im wondering in the future which blockchain would you prefer be used for Tor domain lookup? Will it be BitShares, Namecoin or Ethereum?

If its going to be BitShares, are you or someone here going to create a patch of the Tor Browser that looks up domain names on the BTS blockchain, and hope that the Tor project accepts the patch ?

Im also wondering what you think of the anti squatter ideas that were part of the DNS plan? As I understand it an organisation like Wikileaks would have to compete in a DNS auction to get its Wikileaks.bit domain name.

It depends on the security, I haven't had the time to review how POS impacts the security model.

The first step to build a compatible solution, then worry about integration with Tor.  We are actually anticipating that we will have to throw away whatever solution we end up using initially.  Fundamentally, the browsers need to modularize their system for checking the authenticity of certificates.  We can still build a secure interim solution but the options are all hacks.

I won't be doing that coding.  I'm a UX developer, I enjoy programing and I do have to understand the internals of these systems but I stay away from any security related code.

I'm not familiar with them all, but I don't care for your auctioning of domain names.  I am something of an anti-squatting crusader but I think the problem is overblown.
