Title: Lavaboom email
Post by: hadrian on July 11, 2015, 11:00:35 am
Until BitShares has a solution implemented for everything, you may be interested in open-source-email-provider-to-be Lavaboom (https://lavaboom.com).

Lavaboom is a zero-knowledge email provider, the first of its kind.

It looks promising, and is in beta with the ability to reserve usernames.

Maybe you'd like to reserve 'BitShares_forum_handle@lavaboom.com'?

You may want to look here on reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/391t2c/ama_with_the_german_team_of_lavaboom/) also.

how is it different from protonmail.ch or tutanota.de?

Copying and pasting sections from the reddit thread:

Question: How does your service stack up against 'competitors' such as tutanota and protonmail?

Various answers:
  • Protonmail is closed source software.
Tutonota isn't as focused on the easy to use interface
  • This is the main difference between us and Tutanota is that we're creating an email service for Average Joe, not Richard Stallman.
  • Lavaboom is incredibly easy to use. You can leave it in "automatic mode" and use it like you would Gmail, and still get an extremely secure zero-knowledge email account (and free PGP matching Lavaboom accounts - and soon any email service). Or you can set it up to offer paranoid-levels of privacy, with manual key management - and soon hardware encryption. No other provider comes close to this.

do you have an invite code? :)

I found out about Lavaboom at https://www.privacytools.io/ (https://www.privacytools.io/), which in itself is worth a look.

do you have an invite code? :)

No, but it looks like anyone can reserve a username at this point if you provide them with another email address. I got this:

Quote
Nice one!
Your username has been reserved.

We have just sent an email to

******@protonmail.ch

We are currently in a closed beta and rolling out account invitations gradually. The email you will receive will tell you how long the wait time is.

I've not received an email yet though. I think when I get the email it may have an invite code in it because the next screen after the one I quoted above allows you to 'Verify invite code'.

With regret we have to inform all of our users that Lavaboom has shut down its services on August 27th. The hello@lavaboom.com e-mail address has been removed.

I am sorry for letting you down.
