Title: Dev Voice Hangout _ Mumble Session Times, Guide and Recording Links *Sticky?*
Post by: emailtooaj on October 27, 2014, 03:27:51 am
Welcome to the Dev Hangout Chat Session thread!!  :D

I’ve put this thread together to make it quick and easy for everyone to join in for a Mumble session.
You’ll be able to listen in, along with asking the Dev’s any questions, state any concerns or to just announce your love and appreciation of all their hard work and efforts!!

If you can’t make it to the Hangout, don’t sweat it!!
All Dev Hangouts have been recorded. Just scroll down this page and you’ll find links to the most recent recordings.

** FYI *** to help keep this OP “Clutter Free”, please don’t reply to this thread ( +5% welcomed though ;) ) !!
If you have to make any suggestions, questions or correct any of my screw ups, please PM me!!
I’ll make adjustments as needed ASAP!! Thanks for understanding! ******

MUMBLE CHAT TIME: every Friday @ 10:00 A.M. EST (Time slot may change periodically)
CLICK HERE TO LOOK UP YOUR TIME ZONE--->>>  http://www.worldtimebuddy.com/?pl=1&lid=4747845,1816670,5391959&h=4747845

Here’s some quick instructions to get you started...
1)   Download the Mumble chat client here...   http://www.mumble.com/mumble-download.php (http://www.mumble.com/mumble-download.php)
2)   Before you install MUMBLE, please have you Mic plugged in and go to your computer’s Audio settings and adjust the volume of your Mic to around 90% total volume.
This will insure you'll get the best settings in the Mumble Setup Wizard!
3)   Install and Open the Mumble client (Run as “Admin” for Windows)
4)   Once opened you’ll be prompted to go through the “Setup Wizard”
Go through the steps to properly setup your Mic (please see helpful tips below)
5)   Once done, in the “Mumble Server Connect” window please click the “Add New…” button
6)   An “Add Server” window will pop up. Add the below settings into this box…
        LABEL: BeyondBitcoin
        ADDRESS: vx31.commandchannel.com
        PORT: 2077
USERNAME: *** (type in your registered BTS name here) ****
7)   Now click the “Connect” button at the bottom of the “Mumble Server Client” window and it will prompt you to enter the Password.
        Enter password     w0rldCh@NG3rsUN!t3
8)   You should now be connected to the Chat room!!!

Helpful Tips….
1)   Always use the “Push to Talk” setting.
In Mumble go to Configure> Settings> Audio Input> Transmission. In the dropdown menu select “Push to Talk”.
**You can program what key to use for push-to-talk by going to “Shortcuts”, click “Add” at bottom of window, and then configure which key works best for you.
2)   Compression!!!   It’s everyone’s friend!!
Try to use AS MUCH compression as your computer can handle. This greatly improves your overall sound quality when talking. Remember, this is getting recorded.
By using enough compression this will help “even out” any volume level spikes of your voice and eliminate digital "clipping" or "popping"!
This will make the editors’ job easier to get a professional sound recording!!
To adjust your compression in Mumble go to...
Configure> Settings> Audio Input> Compression. Slide the bar as far right as possible.
3)   Always try to use a Mic/Headset combo whenever possible. This will help eliminate any feedback looping!!
If you’re using a laptop for chat please plug in Headphones while using the on board Mic.
4)   If your Mumble audio settings are hard to configure and you keep “Maxing” out and are "clipping", then go back into your Computers main audio settings and adjust the
        Mics input volume down.
I’d recommend starting at 90% volume, then work down from there. Adjust it in 5% increments (i.e. 85%, 80%, 75% etc. etc.)
5)   Enjoy the show!!!

I'm not sure it has been determined that it is going to be 9 am from here forward.  That was a day specifically chosen for Chinese and is 6am in parts of the states.  I'm not the one to make the decision, but there were not that many Chinese actively vocalizing questions, so many could be asked outside of the show and answered on the show.

well , many of Fuzzy's questions that night were actually from the Chinese community in real time....by a Instant Messager software named QQ.

That night QQ group and Mumble were like a common ground for communication in real time , maybe just didn't seem like that .

There were actually more than 30 Chinese asking question in real time and pass on to Fuzzy by QQ , and I pass the translation back to the Chinese , so they asked new question if the answer needed further discussions.

Though the QQ group , the Mumble hang out that night were channeling with more than 100 + people in China (if counting on the other QQ groups that had passed on the message , we're talking about hundreds of people ) .

Of course , we were planing on move things forward by 5 hours , 6 hours earlier was more than we expected . If it's too trouble for the other people or the devs , we can delay the section for 90 minutes to 10:30 AM EST maybe ?

By now it's safe to say if it's 10:30 AM EST , then it's 10:30 PM Beijing time. The calculation is easier than I thought.

I was mistaken about 6am, it is only 7am west coast.  Moving it forward 1.5 hours would be nice I think.  I think it would be  11:30 am for BM though thats right before lunch time.  It is very hard to get the proper time.  When we moved it from saturday morning to Friday afternoon we had a huge increase of participants.  It is great to hear there are so many Chinese tuned in through these 2nd layers like QQ.  It puts a new perspective on the time slots and makes the prioritizing decision a bit more clear.

My understanding is the mumble limit has been increased too.

9:00 AM + 1.5 hour = 10:30 AM ,not 11:30 AM  for BM's blacksburg .

Oh, I got the timezones mixed up.  So it is 6am on the West Coast.   Hrmmm.

Nice clean page, great job. I think with this and some standardized times we can see a even greater participation in the future.

This is EXACTLY why air traffic all use Zulu time. Perhaps we can switch to listing all times in UTC and letting people do their own math.

Keep in mind that this all changes next weekend with the end of Daylight Savings Time.

Thanks for the feedback  ;)

I've made some minor tweaks to the page.
Added the worldtimebuddy link and set it to show time slots for Virginia-USA, San Francisco-USA and Beijing-China time.
There is also the ability to add 1 more location so anyone else on the globe can search their time zone.

I also changed some verbiage and made additional font adjustments.

I'm not sure what the Chinese have voiced RE: a reasonable chat time, but IMO I'd think 9am EST would still be the best time slot for everyone.
It would be 9pm in their time zone and as for the peeps in western USA it would be 6am. Anyone listening in from Europe would be around Noon in their time zone.
It's a tough challenge  :P

Great job dude.  The guide etc to help people get started helps a ton so we don't have random people feedbacking into the audio etc by not using push to talk is a big help.

Thank you for your work.  Lots of people around want to give ideas, but few want to get their hands dirty. :(
