This project has been shelved indefinitely while we focus on light wallets and protocol upgrades/fixes.

As I understand it the mail system is still used for light wallets under the hood. Is that correct?

Not the light wallet being developed here https://bitsharestalk.org/index.php?topic=13870.msg180348#msg180348 which uses a centralized client/server model.
