Title: [GUIDE] The "No BS Amazon AWS Protoshare Cloud Mining Guide"
Post by: lordfirefox on November 29, 2013, 11:21:37 am
I'm posting this guide up here. It's in LibreOffice .odt format but can be opened in Wordpad on Windows 8 as well. If needed I could convert it to a .pdf

the pool used was beeeeer.org's pool and ptsminer.

Pimu7pvvbCJF9LKsCUw2ZUb2pdHRzLLjBa for Donations and I might do a more recent one for Coyote pool (maybe).  8)

Nice guide very informative, will post a link to my thread.

I was wondering I am doing some tests and was wondering if you know how to mine a GPU (scrypt miner) on the amazon EC2 GPU instances?

Trying Cgminer and spent literally 7 hours, I've tried everything but it won't work. I've noticed alot of figured it out but their guides seem outdated.

If you know how to setup or know someone that can please let me know.

I'll donate 1 PTS for help, preferably over teamviewer (I'll have a amazon EC2 GPU instance ready to go) I prefer Ubuntu but windows is also ok.

Just to let you know guys, the spot instance for a c3.4xlarge in South East asia  (Sydney) is only at 0.22 ... quite a bargain.

I tried to get them but it did not work (even for 0.35). The prices statistics are sometimes strange... or do just not understand it.

I do not understand either.  I put a bid in at Sidney for $0.5.  According to the price history the spot price is $0.447.  The status message for my request states the minimum fulfillment price is 15.99

I had the spot request for 24h ... after that, I keep getting this message in the log when I try to spot it : Your Spot request with price 0.51 was not fulfilled as the number of Spot requests with equal or higher prices exceeds the available capacity in this pool. ...

damb it ...

Nice guide, but I'd like to point out that you don't have to type all those commands in PUTTY.  Copy to clipboard, then right click in PUTTY to paste.  Also, once you have one set up, save the image from that instance and select it from "My AMI's" for the next instances so you don't have to install everything again.  This works even better if you add the run miner commands to a startup script, as that way you don't even have to connect to new instances, they'll just put themselves to work.

Well, I did some calculation. AWS might not be worth it unless you believe PTS price will raise dramatically in the future. (After your $100 free credit)

One cc2.8xlarge generates about 0.002685PTS per hour. At the current PTS/USD rate, that is $0.06143 USD. Even at the lowest price, cc2.8xlarge will cost you about $0.27 per hour. So you will have a negative ROI.

I strongly believe that the market value of PTS is in fact gonna sky rocket soon enough ... I don't mind paying between 2 to 8 $ a day to mine ... it's called an investment.

two instance of c1.xlarge costs me 0.15/hour for now with a spot instance and are giving me 0.04 PTS per hour/hour and a half ... I'm not even losing money yet. And with the 100 $ from amazon, I'm making enough profit to compensate for a week or so of paying from my pocket ...

Definitely worth it. If you are not willing to risk something, you will never have a chance to be rich.

Can someone explain to me the pricing of spot instances?  On http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/#spot (http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/#spot) is a table which shows lowest price per region.  It is updated every 5 minutes.  Currently in Sydney, a c3.8xlarge is a $0.894 per Hour.  When I try to request a spot instance at lets say Max Price of $1.0, it is tagged as price-to-low.  In the Status line it states that $1.0 is lower than the minimum required Spot request fulfillment price of 40.0.   Looking at the Pricing History table, it shows a spike to $1.20, but holds steady at $0.89.  I am not sure what is going on.

You checked for Linux/UNIX u need to check for Linux/UNIX (Amazon VPC) then you will get the correct prices.

The minimum price for a spot instance is dependent on the number of spot request they are currently receiving ... check in the other region and check TheStorm's comment.

You better set your spot max price between 0.15 and + above the minimum if you want to have time to mine ...

If the prices are getting crazy then go with some smaller Spot instances. You can set up multiple instances to mine. Just check prices before you commit.

But i have this probleme when i'm installing ptsminer (with the makefile)

g++ -Wl,-z,relro -Wl,-z,now  -o ptsminer  obj/cpuid.o obj/sha512_avx.o obj/sha512_sse4.o obj/sha512.o obj/sph_sha2.o obj/sph_sha2big.o obj/main_poolminer.o  -Wl,-Bdynamic -l boost_system -l boost_filesystem -l boost_program_options -l boost_thread -l boost_chrono -Wl,-Bdynamic -l z -l dl -l pthread
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lz

Is it true that AWS is cracking down on all those that are using EC2 instances to mine? Making them paying full price instead of spot isntance prices? Or this rumour is just an hoax to make spot instances prices go down?

That's the first I've heard of it. Why would amazon deny themselves revenu by clamping down on PTS miners? That doesn't make any sense.

Thanks

You are missing library "lz"

if you have zlib1g-dev already and it doesn't work, try using the 32bit lib32z1-dev

The Amazon page for the free $100 credit appears to have 404'd.

Would anyone be interested in a post outlining all of the cloud computing services that offer free trials that can be used for mining?

I just realized my final draft somehow removed the line:

Code: [Select]

sudo apt-get install build-essential libssl-dev libboost-all-dev yasm unzip mc

It appears in the earlier drafts of the document however. Not sure why or how it vanished from my Google Doc's version. (And no it's not set editable by the public)

Anyways I corrected it.

These are the ones I found that are worth mining PTS on, others I found are a few days only and very very low specs.

Has anyone been able to get an EC2 server recently?

The $100 free still works as its been applied to my account, but getting a spot is impossible:

Edit.  Had to up to $1. Can't get yvgprotominor working on it now...

Go for cc2.8xlarge instead.  Cheaper and 500cm

Eh, haven't had a problem at all

can get 8 core for 7 cents

ed:  though you'd need to get it for about 3 cents now for it to be worth it

Anybody knows how we will be charged after the 100 free credit? They just stop the server or charge us from credit card directly? I don't even know where to check my used credit, it always displays 0, but I have been running it for 2 days...

amazon will charge you for overage

i also had a hard time locating the actual bill.  i think it only updates once a day.  go to billing & there should be a 'Bills' under 'Dashboard' in that menu... click on Bills... then it should break it down like so

Details   Total
AWS Service Charges   $11.54
Data Transfer   $0.00
Elastic Compute Cloud   $10.96
Simple Notification Service   $0.00
GST to be collected   $0.00
US Sales Tax to be collected   $0.58
VAT to be collected   $0.00

which means I went over a bit.. but you can click on details and it should give breakdown of your fees & so you can see how close you are to passing that credit

Would be greatly appreciated   :)

Back to the whole amazon debacle.  My bills only show values in brackets.  When I queried this, they said I was in the free tier and still had my credit.

This month, my bill is in brackets, yet the total is £0
